3 From the President Downton Returns Last year s Masterpiece Classic: Downton Abbey was a hit by every measure: 13 million viewers tuned in, and 1 million more watched online. the series took home six Primetime emmys, including Outstanding miniseries, and garnered universal critical acclaim: An instant classic (The New York Times) impossible to resist (The Wall Street Journal) Compulsively watchable from the get-go (Variety). And itunes named Downton Abbey one of the top tv series of 011. this month, Downton returns for season (see page 9), and WGBH s Rebecca Eaton, Masterpiece executive producer, promises it was worth the wait. the cast you love is back including maggie smith, Hugh Bonneville and elizabeth mcgovern, rebecca says. And screenwriter Julian Fellowes is in top form. What can fans expect? it s a closely guarded secret, rebecca tells us. But, i can promise you that someone will fall in love and someone will not, someone will get married, someone will get pregnant and someone will die. Last year, the Masterpiece team celebrated the series 40th anniversary with a string of dramatic successes, including Time magazine naming rebecca one of the 100 most influential people in the world. But rebecca is not looking back. there s so much to look forward to in 01, including seven weeks of Downton Abbey three more than last year for a total of 10 hours, she says. We ve also got three new episodes of Sherlock another series that s a gift from the television gods and some brand-new adaptations of Charles dickens, including Great Expectations starring Gillian Anderson and ray Winstone, and a lesser-known dickens, The Mystery of Edwin Drood. And we re pleased to give Masterpiece viewers more ways than ever to experience their favorite dramas. some 90,000 Facebook fans are using the social networking site (facebook.com/masterpiecepbs) to discuss all things Masterpiece. And you can watch Masterpiece online after each broadcast premiere at wgbh.org. Perhaps more than any other WGBH series, Masterpiece is a part of people s lives. Whether you love great classics, contemporary thrillers or clever mysteries, Masterpiece is there for you and your family: inspired, literate drama that millions of people across new england and around the country count on every week thanks to your generous annual support. Don t let the move complicate it. We are reflecting on the privilege of 10 years of service to the many clients who have entrusted their moves to us. Over the next months we ll be sharing some of our clients kind words and to all of them we say Thank you. It seems as though we have always lived here. There are no unpacked boxes and everything we own seems to have found a place here. We could not have done the move as it evolved without all of you. You made what can be a traumatic experience a very pleasant one and at times, just plain fun! It was as if friends had come to help us move. I can t begin to thank you enough. -TS, Marblehead Advertisement Call for a free consultation ! Find your favorite British dramas on WGBH 19

25 Radio Spotlight At Home with Classical New England Classical New England s new music director, Cheryl Willoughby, who joined WGBH in October, has crisscrossed the country in pursuit of her passions: classical music and radio. A classical music fan from a young age, Willoughby began her career in Denver as a teenage volunteer at her local classical radio station, where she filed albums and immersed herself in the world of radio. After producing and directing classical radio in Denver and Los Angeles, Willoughby came east to New England, where she served as music director and director of programming for Vermont Public Radio Classical for seven years before joining WGBH. Willoughby recently chatted with WGBH s Jennifer Goebel about her passion for classical music, her new role at Classical New England and the importance of local classical radio to our community. How did your interest in classical music Q develop? I started playing the French horn when I was A nine, and was instantly taken with the music. When I was 1, I got an FM radio and it changed my world. I had grown up on country music, which I still actually love, and I hadn t heard much else. I remember one January day when I was doing my usual Saturday-morning housecleaning chores, I heard the Met Opera on my radio. I didn t know that the human voice could sound like that it was so remarkable and so stunningly beautiful. That was the beginning of my love for classical music and opera. I began volunteering at my local classical station, which happened to be in my neighborhood. I was 13, so I filed albums and swept floors, mostly, but I really enjoyed being immersed in classical music at the station. New England is quite a change from Q Colorado and California. How do you like it here? A I feel like I was meant to live in New England. I never really felt at home until I moved to Vermont. I absolutely love the snow and the cold weather. I missed that in Los Angeles and even in Colorado. Winters were never long enough for me. What appealed to you about joining Q WGBH? WGBH has such a long-established history, A with deep commitments on both sides both from the organization to its community, and also from listeners who support the radio station. I was really excited to be asked to be a part of it. What are you most looking forward to Q in your new role? Learning as much as I can about, and con- A necting with, the arts organizations here. I m particularly interested in building a collaborative approach to programming and to creating artistic experiences for our listeners. Why is a classical music station Q important to a community? That s been a big question in our business in A recent years: What are we doing that listeners will find compelling enough to make us their choice instead of satellite radio, the dozens of other classical stations available online or something from their own music collection? The answer is be local, and be the best local you can be. And that s what Classical New England does so well, with local hosts and programs originating from right here in our own region. BSO on Record, New England Summer Festivals and Baroque in Boston are great examples. If you want a listening experience that reflects your own world back to you, talks to you about the things you re seeing and hearing each day, local classical radio is it. You sometimes substitute for our Q classical hosts. How do you like hosting? I love sharing the music with people and A getting feedback, too. It used to be that we only heard from people on the phone, if we had one in the studio, or through letters. Radio has benefited from social media: we now have a way to interact with listeners during the show through Twitter, Facebook and . It s great to find out what people are thinking about and hear how listeners are responding to what we play on air. Radio is about engagement, a two-way exchange rather than a megaphone. Social media provides strong tools to enable that kind of relationship. What is Classical New England s greatest Q contribution to the classical music scene in Boston? A voice, first and foremost. I hear the voices of A the artistic community in our region speaking, singing and playing on the air. Our hosts also are an enormous asset. They are so warm and knowledgeable. Each one has a unique take on the world of classical music, and I ve already learned a lot from them. I m enjoying their friendship both as a listener and as a colleague. It s Mozart s birthday this month. Is Q there anything about Mozart that our listeners might want to know? A Mozart was a great letter writer. His letters are funny, witty, very smart and thoughtful. Anthologies of Mozart s letters are available, and well worth a read. They offer insights and context for his music that you wouldn t otherwise get. You might know that he took an Italian tour with his father, but when he writes to his mother or his sister about bumping along in the carriage or about a little ditty he wrote in some small town along the way, you get a whole different perspective. Do you have a favorite composer or Q period of classical music? I couldn t choose a favorite. I think that s A because I come to music (even in my personal life!) from a music programmer perspective what s just the right piece or performance for this exact moment in time? With that kind of intent, it s hard to have only one favorite composer or piece of music. My favorite piece is the right piece at the right time, wherever I am and whatever I m doing. I understand you are an award-winning Q photographer with several recent shows to your credit. Have you found any favorite places to shoot? A It s true. My camera s having a great time here. Some favorite new picturesque places are Wollaston Beach, Nantasket, the Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, Gloucester and Rockport. Schedules, program info, playlists: classicalnewengland.org 3

26 Boston Public Radio Radio on the Cutting Edge By Phil Redo Managing Director, 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio As we begin 01, WGBH Radio continues its news expansion with emphasis on specific editorial concentrations. One of them is the concept and implications of innovation. Listening to 89.7 WGBH Radio, you have likely noticed the word innovation popping up often in our stories and local programs. This past September, we covered a new innovation festival called T=0, held in Kendall Square that, among other things, established a first-ever Entrepreneur s Walk of Fame. If Hollywood is known for movie stars, Kendall Square wants to be home for entrepreneurial stars. And the inaugural inductees are an impressive list: Thomas Edison (General Electric), Bill Hewlett and David Packard (Hewlett-Packard), Mitch Kapor (Lotus), Bill Gates (Microsoft) and Steve Jobs (Apple). Also in September, WGBH Radio joined forces with Xconomy.com to bring news directly from the start-up world to our Morning Edition listeners every Friday. In October, WGBH Radio s Phillip Martin reported on a partnership between MIT and the village of Skolkovo, in the suburbs of Moscow, to assist in the development of an entire innovation city. Alexey Sitnikov, director of the International Development Department at the Skolkovo Foundation in Moscow, informed our listeners of the foundation s efforts to follow the model of Silicon Valley and the type of activities found here in the Boston area. Because the subject of innovation is so large and significant to our region, this past fall WGBH Radio introduced Innovation Hub, a weekly onehour program hosted by WGBH contributor Kara Miller that brings our listeners the region s most innovative thinkers. The show examines new ideas and potential solutions to many of today s challenges. Topics have ranged from education and health care, to green energy and obesity. If you haven t heard Innovation Hub yet, give it a listen every Saturday morning at 7am or, if that s too early, tune in the rebroadcast on Sundays at 10pm. Find more information articles, audio features and photos on these stories and others at wgbh.org/89.7. Sunday Spotlight with Eric Jackson Martin Luther King Host Eric Jackson pays tribute to Martin Luther King in words and music in this evening s program. Some of King s speeches will be featured as well as music that highlights King s ideas, including Herbie Hancock s I Have A Dream, The Jazz Crusaders Freedom Sound and Ernest Dawkins Hymn for A Hip King. Sun, 1/16 at 10pm Arts & Ideas The Secret Life of Girls Host Tina Fey, star of 30 Rock and Saturday Night Live alumna, takes listeners around the world from the dunes of the Sahara to a slumber party in Manhattan, from the dance halls of Jamaica to a racetrack in Ramallah into the secret life of girls. In the first of two hour-long specials, Fey also reveals some of her own hidden worlds. 27 Political Cartoons from The Carol Hills has been with The (a WGBH co-production with PRI and the BBC Service) in a variety of roles since she helped launch the program back in These days, in addition to producing for the daily radio program, she follows the work of political cartoonists around the globe and presents their work at theworld.org. You ve been able to connect with Q cartoonists all around the world. How important are cartoons in other cultures? It depends on the region and on the degree A of press freedom in a country. South Asia, for example, has an amazing tradition of political cartooning. Indian cartoonist R.K. Laxman has rock-star status. He s been cartooning since India s independence in 1947 and somehow has the attention and love of a very large and very diverse country. I think the visual nature of cartooning is especially effective in a country that s so multilingual, like India. In some developing democracies, cartoons play a vital role and the cartoonists who draw them are incredibly courageous. One of the most famous political cartoonists in Africa perhaps the world is Zapiro (Jonathan Shapiro) of South Africa. He started out as an anti-apartheid activist in the 1980s and that thread of activism, of demanding political accountability, is a constant theme in his cartoons even today. Politically repressive regimes tend not to tolerate the court jester role of political cartoonists. Malaysian authorities routinely ban the work of one of the country s best-known cartoonists. If you re a political cartoonist in Cuba, you can draw cartoons, but you can t comment on the government. It s no surprise that I have yet to find a political cartoonist in North Korea. The has been covering the Q uprisings in the Middle East and North Africa since they began almost a year ago. How has the Arab Spring influenced cartoonists? A It absolutely has been a turning point for many cartoonists in the Arab world, though some have paid a terrible price. In Egypt, cartoonists who never dared draw former Egyptian leader Hosni Mubarak in any identifiable way started doing so after the uprising got underway. And after the revolution, they were among the first to express impatience with the pace of reform under the transitional military government. In the case of Libya, anti-gaddafi cartoons started appearing on the sides of buildings in Benghazi last February, just after protests began. It was a sort of thumb-in-the-nose to the official portraits of Gaddafi that used to be everywhere. Tragically, during those early weeks of the uprising, a 34-year-old Libyan cartoonist, Kais al-hilali, was shot and killed while drawing a caricature of Muammar Gaddafi on a wall in Benghazi. In Syria, the situation is very difficult. Last August, I was actually researching a profile of a respected political cartoonist named Ali Ferzat when the news broke that he had been found bloody and beaten but still alive on a road in Damascus. Ferzat is a cartoonist who s known across the Middle East. He s been cartooning for 40 years and has been in and out of favor under successive regimes. The thugs who beat Ferzat broke one of his arms along with several fingers and warned him to stop cartooning. Political cartoonists around the world reacted swiftly, drawing cartoons in solidarity with Ferzat and exhibiting his work. Then in October, Ferzat was one of five Arab Spring activists awarded the European Parliament s Sakharov Prize. That honor has afforded Ferzat some protection but he is still recuperating from the beating. If you had to pick one place, what region Q of the world has been producing really compelling cartoons lately? That s a tough one because I m limited by A language. I only publish cartoons I can get translated into English, but there are thousands more out there that I just can t access at the moment. Right now, the news stories themselves seem to be dictating the source of great cartoons. There are great cartoons coming out of Europe at the moment because of the financial crisis. The Arab and Muslim world remains a strong source of cartoons because of the Arab Spring and the Arab- Israeli conflict. It s interesting to compare the work of Arab and Israeli cartoonists. Sometimes they have more in common than you might think. What do you think cartoons say about Q societies around the world? What can we learn from them here in the US? A Political cartoons from around the world are a great window into how people in those countries are interpreting or thinking about news events. It s an inside view. You re often introduced to an inside joke or drama that s gripping a country that you d never know about otherwise. The cartoons aren t always funny nor are they meant to be. They re sometimes very serious, but I m continuously impressed with the humor, nuance and artistic talent of the cartoonists whose work I encounter. 28 Classical New England Downton Abbey s Composer: The Unsung Hero By Brian McCreath Classical New England Announcer/Producer If you found yourself, like so many public television viewers, enraptured with the drama and sheer range of human experience depicted in Masterpiece s Downton Abbey, what was the element that drew you in? Was it the gorgeous scenery of the English countryside, or the almost poetic writing that brought the characters to life? Was it the exquisite period clothing and décor? Or was it the underlying plot currents of change and transformation in the air? One especially powerful aspect of Downton you may not have noticed at least consciously was the music you heard. Actress Michelle Dockery, (Lady Mary Crawley) declared soundtrack composer John Lunn the unsung hero of Downton. The cast might have noticed, but if you didn t, that s as it should be. Lunn s music to Downton accomplishes precisely what any film score must: a ratcheting up of the emotional trajectory of the story while simultaneously going unnoticed. In the case of Downton, the music, unlike the sets, costumes and décor, is decidedly not from the era of the drama. Rather, it s a sound from our own time. In fact, Lunn (whose other Masterpiece credits include the scores to Bleak House and Little Dorrit) has said that it would have been impossible to 5am 10am pm 7pm 9pm Classical Music with Laura Carlo Classical Music with Alan McLellan 1pm Café Europa Classical Music with Cathy Fuller Thursdays: 4pm BSO Preview Fridays: 4pm Drive Time Live Performance Today with Fred Child Classical Music with James David Jacobs Fridays: Concierto draw on music of the early 0th century for Downton because that musical language is too melodramatic. The music Lunn wrote succeeds by pulling off a particular magic of film composers, drawing emotional resonance from the settings and characters in the film and transferring them to a sound world. 29 Music in the Time of Downton Abbey By Cheryl Willoughby Classical new england music director i ve given my life to downton it is my third parent, and my fourth child! Lord Grantham emphatically declares his commitment to his heritage in Downton Abbey, summarizing both the personal conflict at the heart of the story, and, more broadly, the rapidly changing social and political world of fin de siècle england itself. the burdensome constraint of tradition weighs heavily on the residents of the grand mansion as they react to their fading reality in the years leading up to the first War. We experience their angst and uncertainty as circumstances hasten their transition from the orderly manners and prescribed culture of the edwardian era into the unsettled frontier of the future. Highclere Castle, Hampshire, UK the Downton Abbey era in its first season and forthcoming second season loosely encompasses the span of 191 through 1919, a period bookended by the sinking of the titanic and the Armistice ending the so-called Great War. it s a time characterized by widely contrasting cultural identities: as longstanding english inheritance practices of peerage and entitlement were being challenged, the epoch also produced some of the most defining and nationalistically Brit works of music in the nation s history. edward elgar s Cello Concerto (1919), Gustav Holst s The Planets (1916) and even the unofficial national anthem, Hubert Parry s iconic Jerusalem (1916), were all written during this time. simultaneously, it was a period of dynamic, wrenching and transformative fundamental change in music: igor stravinsky s scandalous Rite of Spring ballet premiered in Paris (may, 1913) and clamorously struck the downbeat for the era of contemporary composition. And, for the first time, with the international suffrage movement powering ahead, such influential female women composers and conductors-composers such as France s nadia Boulanger and england s rebecca Clarke boldly claimed unprecedented professional stakes in the musical arts. What is the music of Downton Abbey? it s light and lovely, and it s dark and brooding. it s the conflicted artistic expression of the changing times it represents. Listen weekdays during January for a shared discovery. We ll even take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of the fascinating musical life of the real downton Abbey Highclere Castle, in Hampshire, now one one of the biggest tourist attractions in the UK. A New Year, a New Wing, a New Era at the Gardner By Ben roe WGBH managing director of Classical services it s a season of broadcast milestones at WGBH; occasions that permit us not only to celebrate past accomplishments, but to imagine new opportunities in our ever-evolving media environment. in October, we marked the 60th anniversary of our live Boston symphony Orchestra broadcasts by introducing a couple of firsts: repeat broadcasts of BsO concerts on sunday afternoons and on-demand access to recent symphony Hall performances via our BsO radio online channel. this month, all of Boston will celebrate another remarkable milestone: the opening of (to my mind at least!) the jewel in the crown of the new renzo Piano-designed wing at the isabella stewart Gardner museum: the Calderwood Performance Hall. music has been central to the Gardner s mission since museum founder isabella Gardner opened her home in the Fenway to the public on January 1, 1903, with a celebration that featured a performance by members of the Boston symphony Orchestra. WGBH has been offering broadcasts of concerts from the Gardner for nearly as long as its BsO broadcasts! And we ll be there again this year, when the Gardner marks the opening of the innovative, multimedia-friendly new performance space with an expanded concert series boasting an impressive array of performers familiar to Classical new Calderwood Performance Hall england listeners including the dynamic young string orchestra A Far Cry, 15-year old virtuoso pianist George Li, the scintillating Claremont trio and a host of others.
