3 From the President Tickled Pink! Nothing is closer to the heart of public media s mission than education, and WGBH has long been known as the trusted leader in creating the best in educational programs for kids. This month, we are excited to continue that tradition with the premiere of our production Pinkalicious & Peterrific (page 3), a wonderful new series that follows the adventures of Pinkalicious, an artist at heart who imagines creative possibilities everywhere she looks. Based on the best-selling Pinkalicious book series by Victoria Kann and produced right here at WGBH, this delightful series is designed to spark creativity and encourage preschool age children to explore the arts. Research shows that arts education enhances preschoolers cognitive, social-emotional and physical development, says series Executive Producer Dorothea Gillim. Having a strong preschool arts foundation improves academic performance and graduation outcomes, particularly among at-risk students, and helps close the achievement gap. In Pinkalicious & Peterrific, we combine two core elements of our mission: education and the arts; the result exposes kids to all kinds of creative arts and a whole range of new experiences in a fun and appealing way. We hope kids get inspired to be more creative dance, sing, pretend play, draw and that they come away wanting to see more episodes! adds Gillim. The series is part of a multiplatform media experience that also will include digital content for kids, parents and teachers. Also this month, we bring you some old friends and well-known favorites to educate, entertain and inspire the youngest people in your life. Beginning on Feb. 13 on WGBX, we premier a new episode of WGBH s long-running series Arthur, featuring US Congressman John Lewis, as part of our recognition of Black History Month. And on Feb. 6, we visit Mister Rogers Neighborhood (page 3) for a special pairing of several episodes of the groundbreaking and beloved program with episodes of the current popular animated series Daniel Tiger s Neighborhood, which it inspired. WGBH has produced some of the most popular children s series over the past 0 years, and also some of the most impactful, says WGBH Senior Executive Producer and Director of Children s Media Carol Greenwald, who brought Arthur to TV. It s about trying to find that connection between format, content and curriculum and bringing it together into something that kids really want to watch. Pull up a chair (or a cushion on the rug) beside a young friend, and check out all that s happening with our children s programs this month. And thanks to you for helping make this and all of our work possible! 28 89.7 WGBH, Boston s Local NPR Boston Celebrates Brian O Donovan Day The city of Boston has bestowed a unique honor on 89.7 WGBH s A Celtic Sojourn host Brian O Donovan for his generous community service. In front of fans at the Cutler Majestic Theatre of Emerson College, Boston Public Library President David Leonard read a proclamation from Boston Mayor Marty Walsh declaring Dec. 14 as Brian O Donovan Day before the opening performance of the 15th season of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn. O Donovan is the host and creator of A Christmas Celtic Sojourn, as well as the iconic 89.7 WGBH radio program A Celtic Sojourn, currently in its 30th season. In the proclamation, Walsh described O Donovan as one of Boston s foremost standard bearers for Irish culture, past, present and future. O Donovan grew up in the small town of Clonakilty in West Cork, before moving to England and eventually to Boston, where he meant to visit only for three weeks but instead remained for more than three decades. Leonard, also an Irish immigrant, cited the significant contributions O Donovan has made to the immigrant communities in the Greater Boston area through his work with the Irish International Immigrant Center and other organizations. Don t miss A Celtic Sojourn, during which O Donovan explores traditional and contemporary music from around the Celtic world, every Saturday at 3pm on 89.7 WGBH. A full schedule and more information can be found at wgbh.org/celtic. 29 99.5 WCRB Music to Warm Your February By Anthony Rudel, 99.5 WCRB Station Manager We often hear from our listeners that the music on WCRB makes the frigid days of February warmer and more delightful, and our programming this month is sure to do so. February has some fabulous highlights, and full listings for Boston Symphony Orchestra broadcasts (Saturdays at 8pm) and WCRB In Concert (Sundays at 7pm) are to the right. One important note about the BSO: This month, the orchestra launches a major artistic initiative with Leipzig Week in Boston. The BSO s unprecedented partnership with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra takes musical form in a Feb. 10 broadcast featuring three of today s greatest pianists Thomas Adès, Kirill Gerstein and Jean- Yves Thibaudet in Bach s Triple Concerto, as well as Mendelssohn s Scottish Symphony, choral works by Schumann, and a world premiere by Sean Shepherd, all conducted by Andris Nelsons. To quote the movie Casablanca, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship! But it s not just the music that warms the spirit in cold months. Our hosts convey knowledge, warmth and enthusiasm every day. This month we wanted to focus on afternoons. Chris Voss, who hosts from pm to 7pm weekdays, describes being at WCRB: In my two and a half years hosting afternoons on WCRB, I ve learned that radio is a funny thing. On the one hand, it has the power to reach thousands of listeners simultaneously and is, therefore, a medium of the masses. On the other hand, radio is usually consumed on a scale of one, affecting each listener individually. I grew up in the Boston area, and my family listened to WCRB and WGBH. I would sit in the living room listening to the announcer, imagining what the faces behind those voices looked like as they introduced the music. It never occurred to me that they spoke to our neighbors too. No, those voices and the music they played was for me alone, to make my mornings feel like my mornings and to give Saturdays their Saturday-ness. Now, that s my job! People in their cars, in their homes or outside listening through earbuds trust me to make their days feel like they think their days should be. That s the thrill of the job. It isn t always easy, and I ve come to appreciate the work that those radio voices of my childhood some of whom I now get to work with did to create that comfort zone for me. I love the music, I love finding interesting points about the pieces, and I love exploring the humanity that made these composers real people. Most of all, I love sharing the music with our listeners. And, I do love being part of the musical fabric of Boston. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Reporting on the Rare North Atlantic Right Whale By Mindy Todd, WCAI Host and Managing Director for Editorial Early winter is generally a good time to catch a glimpse of North Atlantic right whales feeding in Cape Cod Bay, and Living Lab Radio is there monitoring the mighty mammals. Right whales are the rarest of all large whale species and among the rarest of all marine mammal species, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Their average length is about 50 feet, and they can weigh up to 79 tons. The bay is a favorite place for the whales to feed on their daily diet of zooplankton, and there are a number of great spots to see them, including Herring Cove and Race Point in Provincetown. But the future does not look bright for North Atlantic right whales, according to Mark Baumgartner, associate scientist with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and chair of the North Atlantic Right Whale Consortium. Baumgartner told Living Lab Radio that these encounters could become scarcer as we continue to see a decline in the number of these majestic creatures. Fewer than 450 of these whales exist today, Baumgartner said. Of that number, only about 100 are breeding females. If four or five of those females die every year, he said, then it will take only 0 to 5 years until today s breeding females are gone from the right whale population. And once we get rid of them, there will still be females around, but there won t be very many, Baumgartner said. And, at that point, the species will likely be unable to recover. Following Baumgartner s conversation on Living Lab Radio, heard both on WCAI and WGBH, host Heather Goldstone said that she had gotten a strong response from listeners. From a biologist in South Africa hoping her country can learn from our experiences, to a local businessman who wants to donate his company s services to help create a viable solution it s reaffirming to see how reporting on an important issue has the potential to push things forward, Goldstone said. The plight of the North Atlantic right whale is a story we continue to monitor and report on during Living Lab Radio, Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Listen to Living Lab Radio Sundays at noon on WGBH and Monday at 9am on WCAI.
