3 Charter Bell ExpressVu (Canada) Cox.1 WGBH HD RCN WGBH FiOS Celebrating the arts is part of our Commonwealth s DNA, and that s no accident. Massachusetts is the only state with a constitution (conceived and written by John Adams) that actually mandates promoting the arts. Here at WGBH, we re embracing that mandate: covering the region s vibrant arts scene and providing a stage on TV, radio and the Web; in our studios; and out in the community to amplify our region s cultural bounty and help you connect with these rich resources. Leading the charge is our Emmy Award-winning reporter Jared Bowen, WGBH executive editor for the arts and Boston television s only full-time arts journalist. Jared is host of our weekly television arts series Open Studio, a regular contributor to Greater Boston with Emily Rooney, and your guide to the arts on 89.7 s Boston Public Radio and Morning Edition. This month on Open Studio (see page 14), Jared offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Museum of Fine Art s new Art of the Netherlands in the 17th Century Gallery, which has just opened after a nearly yearlong renovation. The new gallery definitely was worth the wait, Jared says. It presents a worldclass survey of Dutch works, with exceptional landscapes and seven Rembrandts. What s the story behind the current gallery, which includes paintings from the Museum s permanent collection along with exceptional works on loan? Jared sits down with the MFA s Malcolm Rogers, the Ann and Graham Gund Director, to find out. For arts of another sort, we head to the Berkshires with 99.5 WCRB, Classical New England for live broadcasts of the entire Tanglewood season every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, starting July 5 (page 7). We also journey to Becket for a special Great Performances: Dancing at Jacob s Pillow (page 19), featuring rare performance footage and candid conversations with many of dance s greatest luminaries in celebration of America s longest-running dance festival. And for the thrill of live performance, be sure to mark your calendar for our nd annual Boston Summer Arts Weekend, a free festival in Copley Square (Friday, 7/6 Sunday, 7/8). A collaboration between WGBH and The Boston Globe, presented by Citizens Bank, the festival showcases Boston s thriving arts community, a range of musical genres and an A-list of headliners, including Grammy winner Alison Krauss, and blues and jazz icon Dr. John and the legendary Preservation Hall Jazz Band (see page ). Music, drama, dance, the visual arts. They help us express ourselves, explore our world, transcend cultural difference. It made Tutankhamen the most famous name in ancient Egyptian history. But the real story has become shrouded in myth, with many mysteries around the tomb unsolved to this day. In this twohour special, a team of archaeologists, anatomists, geologists and Egyptologists combines the latest evidence to build the ultimate picture of Tutankhamen. Blending 3-D graphics, stylized reconstruction and action-adventure forensic investigation, the program takes a 1st-century approach to ancient history, following new scientific research and presenting fresh insights into how Tutankhamen was buried, why his tomb was the only one to remain intact and the enduring enigma around how he died. 26 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio A Hub for Innovation and Education WGBH News on radio, TV and online is exploring the ways innovation and higher education are driving Boston s economy and culture, and shaping what the city will look like tomorrow and beyond. Every Saturday on 89.7 WGBH, Innovation Hub hosted by Kara Miller talks to the region s most creative thinkers business leaders and entrepreneurs, scientists and doctors, engineers and artists about their new ideas. And beginning this summer, WGBH s new Higher Education Desk will bring you regular reports about Boston s many colleges and universities. There s no denying that Boston is a college town, says WGBH Radio general manager Phil Redo. Our audience can expect stories that shed light on the various factors economic, political, cultural and more that will determine the future of higher education. Kirk Carapezza, an award-winning reporter and producer, is the newly appointed managing editor and lead correspondent for the Higher Education Desk, which is being supported by the Lumina Foundation. His reporting will examine the future of our colleges and universities and the ways these local institutions currently affect the economy, job market, national security and a host of other underreported community issues. On Innovation Hub, guests such as Yahoo! President Marissa Mayer, educator and entrepreneur Salman Khan, noted author Jared Diamond and physicist Michio Kaku give a local accent to topics of national and international importance. As the show s audience continues to grow locally, new listeners are hearing its conversations across the nation through Public Radio International s podcast distribution, where tens of thousands download the show each month. Boston is unique in the way it has elevated innovation to become a key component of its personality and economic engine. Innovation Hub is doing the same for WGBH Radio, Redo says. Kara brings a casual expertise and an infectious intellectual curiosity to every broadcast, making the show informative and entertaining. Tune into 89.7 WGBH, Boston Public Radio, for Innovation Hub every Saturday at 10am (with repeats Thursdays at 9pm), and look for Kirk Carapezza s higher education reporting across all of WGBH News s platforms. 28 99.5 WCRB, Classical New England Boston Pops Fireworks for the Fourth of July! By Benjamin K. Roe Managing Director of Classical Services When Leonard Bernstein was a child growing up in Lawrence, his parents would regularly take him to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra play in Symphony Hall and especially to hear the orchestra in its Boston Pops guise playing for free on the Charles River Esplanade. Decades later, Bernstein wrote his Divertimento for the orchestra s 100th anniversary, with a stirring Pops-like march finale called The BSO Forever. Bernstein said at the time, It reflects my youthful experiences here where I heard my first orchestral music. I nearly fell out of my chair I was so excited. And there s no more exciting time to hear great music played in the great outdoors than with the Fourth of July tradition Boston shares with the nation: the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular. If you can t be there in person, join us live on the radio to hear Keith Lockhart, the Boston Pops, special guests and 99.5 WCRB Classical New England s own Ron Della Chiesa and Laura Carlo. Ron and Laura will be live from the Esplanade starting at 6pm on July 4, with features, interviews and special Pops recordings leading up to the concert. At 7pm, our sister station 89.7 WGBH will join in, bringing you all of the sound from the Hatch Shell stage, all the way to the first fusillade of fireworks. Its the perfect soundtrack for your Fourth of July celebrations, and it s just a click of the radio dial away. Who knows maybe the next Leonard Bernstein will be listening! 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station The Future of Fishing By Steve Junker, WCAI producer and host Wherever you look in the fishing industry, there s a struggle: many fish species are struggling; scientists are struggling to account for stocks within an ocean environment experiencing climate change; fisheries managers are struggling to translate assessments into a coherent regulatory strategy that adheres to the constraints of the law. And fishermen? They re struggling to understand regulations, run businesses, maintain a way of life, and, of course, find fish. But the struggle is not the end of the story. For two weeks this month, we re taking a closer look at New England s fisheries with our series The Long Haul: The Future of New England s Fisheries. Advances in technology are bringing improvements to stock assessment, species-specific gear is allowing for smarter fishing, and a lot of hard work is being done to build trust and better collaboration between fishermen and regulators. While there is consensus that the fishing industry will have a future, the big questions are: What do we want it to look like, and how do we get there? WCAI science editor Heather Goldstone, host of Living Lab on The Point, says the fishing industry is at a crossroads. There are fishermen in crisis, certainly. But there are others who are finding innovative ways to make fishing sustainable for both fish and fishermen, Goldstone says. The industry will likely look very different in 10 years that s what is exciting to me. In addition to commercial fishing, the series will look at recreational fishing, a facet of the industry that generates more than a billion dollars a year in Massachusetts. Fishing is going through tremendous change, says WCAI senior reporter and series editor Sean Corcoran. We want to look at what is happening, and give listeners an understanding of where things are now, as well as what the future may hold for this important industry. The Long Haul: The Future of New England s Fisheries will air new segments every weekday, July 8 19, on Morning Edition and All Things Considered. Tune in The Point weekdays at 9am for discussions about the series. And go to capeandislands.org to fill out an online poll about your priorities for the fishery. The series is funded by The Circle of Ten 10 local businesses and organizations that support local programming on WCAI.
