3 From the President Simon Schama: Making History Historian and prize-winning author Simon Schama, whose acclaimed documentaries include The Power of Art and The History of Britain, returns to WGBH this month with a subject he first took up and then put down as a young academic at Cambridge and Oxford in the 1970s. it is a story that is both monumental and close to home: The Story of the Jews (page 16). i wanted to offer people who aren t Jews, especially, a way into Jewish history that s not just about the Holocaust and the Palestinian conflict, schama says. i want to show them it s their history, too an extraordinary history and culture built around memory, around cherishing and making sacred a set of books and words. the five-hour series follows schama as he travels the world exploring the imprint that Jewish culture has made over 3,000 years, and the drama of suffering, resilience and rebirth that has gone with it. this also is a personal journey for schama, who has been immersed in Jewish history since his childhood in post-war Britain. schama draws his narrative from a treasure trove of primary sources from a collection of fifth-century BC papyrus manuscripts illuminating the life of a town of Jewish soldiers and their families in ancient egypt, to the records of disputes between Christians and Jews in medieval spain, to correspondence between emir Feisal, the leader of the Arab revolt during War i, and Chaim Weizmann, head of the Zionist movement. When schama s The Story of the Jews premiered in the UK on the BBC this past fall, the British press called it an astonishing achievement, a tv landmark, idiosyncratic, accessible, but always authoritative just like the man himself. i ve made more than 50 films over the last 5 years, says schama. tv is a very good discipline: it s meant to educate and entertain. And that s something WGBH does very well. Bringing history to life deepening our understanding of the world we share is central to our public media and educational mission. it s your generous annual support that makes all this possible. thank you. 15 Greater Boston Leaning Forward By matthew roy, WGBH writer WGBH s Greater Boston debuted a redesigned set in January, beginning the new year with host emily rooney and guests sitting behind a prominent new piece of furniture. the desk is the centering point, says ted Canova, tv and radio news director for WGBH news. Having replaced a set of low-slung armchairs, the desk has changed Greater Boston s posture. instead of leaning back, everyone s leaning forward, Canova says. And this physical change reflects larger changes in the way Greater Boston now approaches its nightly analysis (weekdays at 7pm on WGBH ) of local and sometimes national and international news. We re also leaning forward in our content, Canova says. We re more curious and we re exploring subjects in more depth. Local depth, local perspective. viewers can expect to find both when they tune in Greater Boston and its Beat the Press edition (Friday, 7pm on WGBH ), says Phil redo, general manager of WGBH radio, who oversees all of WGBH s news programming, including Greater Boston. the assumption is that people who watch the show have already read or heard the news of the day, redo says. the challenge for us is to bring context to it, and we re fortunate to be able to draw on not only our own experienced team of reporters, but also the intellectual richness of Boston and the experts in a range of fields who reside here. When contemplating Greater Boston s new course, redo and Canova looked to what has worked on 89.7 WGBH Boston Public radio and decided to apply the station s Focus reports to television. On Greater Boston, viewers now see a single subject explored from different angles over multiple days. Our Focus reports are something we implemented on 89.7 two years ago, and we ve had great feedback and success, Canova says. it was one of our stakes in the ground as we were transitioning 89.7 to a news station, a way to differentiate ourselves from other public and commercial media. WGBH reporter Adam reilly is spearheading the Focus coverage, which has touched on bullying in schools and the workplace, football s concussion crisis and police training around mental illness, among other topics. Adam is a deep thinker and a big thinker, Canova says, and his experience and curiosity are huge assets. the show s arts coverage also has evolved. Beyond reviewing a play, movie or exhibit, WGBH s emmy Award winning arts reporter Jared Bowen is looking at cultural trends. He might take a movie about Wall street and tie it to a stage performance about Bernie madoff and even a Frontline documentary, Canova says. instead of a movie review, his story is about the glamorization of greed in America. Greater Boston viewers also are seeing more of the reporters they hear on 89.7, from Boston Public Radio midday hosts Jim Braude and margery eagan to Innovation Hub host Kara miller and the rest of the WGBH news team (see page 6). they join emily rooney, a veteran journalist with un matched knowledge of local news and politics, to discuss topics WGBH news is devoted to following: life sciences and the environment, innovation and higher education. to me, redo says, the story about the new Greater Boston is this transformation of the show from a stand-alone production to a front-facing expression of WGBH news a hub for the best in local coverage on tv, radio and the Web. that s what s exciting. No Job for a Woman: The Women Who Fought to Report WWII focuses on the lives and work of three such women: wire service reporter ruth Cowan, magazine journalist martha Gellhorn and photographer Dickey Chapelle. narrated by emmy-winning actress Julianna margulies, this documentary combines the words of these groundbreaking women with rare archival footage, historic photographs and interviews with contemporary female war reporters. No Job for a Woman Thu, 3/13 at 8pm Secret Soldiering Harry t. Buford fought as an officer in the battle of First Bull run, was wounded at shiloh, served as a Confederate spy and ultimately defended the Union. meanwhile he harbored a treasonable secret: his true identity as Loreta Janeta Velazquez, a Cuban immigrant and one of an estimated 1,000 women who soldiered in the American Civil War. For years velazquez s story was dismissed as a hoax. now Rebel draws from letters, government documents, newspapers and other primary sources, including velazquez s own controversial memoir, to bring this amazing history to life. Voces/Rebel Fri, 3/14 at 8pm Mothers Behind Bars many parents find it hard to imagine being separated from their children for a week, much less 10 or 0 years. Yet 80 percent of women in Us prisons today are mothers of school-age children. Mothers of Bedford examines the effects of long-term prison sentences on mother-child relationships. it follows five women incarcerated at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, capturing both their ordinary struggles as parents and surreal experiences unique to prison life: infant birthday parties behind bars, children at home in a mother s cell and the facility s biggest celebration of the year mother s day. 28 89.7 WGBH Boston Public Radio The Synergy of WGBH News A great story deserves an audience, wherever that audience happens to be. And the more than 40 reporters and producers on deadline in WGBH s bustling Brighton newsroom the journalistic engine of WGBH News know that there s a good chance they ll be telling their stories in more than one place. Whether it s a report on one of 89.7 s news programs, a segment on Greater Boston on WGBH (see page 13) or a multimedia package posted on WGBHnews.org, the work of WGBH journalists populates multiple platforms. The word synergy comes to mind, says Ted Canova, TV and radio news director for WGBH News. It s the type of collaboration that we ve been working toward since 89.7 shifted to a primarily news focus three years ago. Reporter Edgar Herwick s feature story about MBTA bus service, for example, is heard first on 89.7 s Morning Edition. Another version airs on All Things Considered in the afternoon, and Herwick appears on Greater Boston at night to discuss it with host Emily Rooney. The goal at each stop is to keep the content fresh, which challenges reporters and hosts to dig deeper into a story or to explore it from another angle. We will definitely showcase reporting across platforms, but only if we can take a story to another level, says Phil Redo, WGBH Radio general manager. An answer Gov. Deval Patrick gives to Jim Braude and Margery Eagan on Boston Public Radio might be incorporated into a story on the next day s Morning Edition. A report by higher education reporter Kirk Carapezza might give Kara Miller an idea for a segment on her show Innovation Hub. We re about voices, not rigid formats, Redo says. We have reporters who are really smart, they re telling interesting stories and they re going to show up all over the place. Arts & Ideas The Southwestern Range The Southwestern Range is one of America s most iconic landscapes. It is also contested ground. Development threatens open space, while border issues mean life in some areas has been transformed by violence and politics. This episode of State of the Re:Union focuses on change, collaboration and innovation on the Southwestern Range. Sun, 3/ at 8pm A Celtic Sojourn Irish Festivities St. Patrick s Day indeed the whole month of March is a time for many in the Irish Diaspora to celebrate roots, says Brian O Donovan, host of A Celtic Sojourn. 29 WCRB 99.5 Celebrating Bach and More in March By Anthony Rudel WCRB 99.5 Station Manager Despite the February arrival of spring training, March signals the real start of spring. With that in mind, it won t be long until the weather warms, and we ll be able to head outdoors again. WCRB s music provides the perfect accompaniment to whatever it is you like to do as the days grow longer and sunnier. Conveniently, the first day of spring (March 0) nearly coincides with Johann Sebastian Bach s 39th birthday (March 1 under the Julian calendar of his era), so all month long, WCRB will be playing even more of his magnificent music throughout our schedule. You ll enjoy performances of all four orchestra suites, the six Brandenburg Concertos and many of his superb keyboard works performed by a variety of artists. And if that s not enough Bach for you, this year March has five Sundays, which means that Brian McCreath s Bach Hour (Sundays at 6am) has five chances to focus on the master during his birthday month. Each week Brian explores another aspect of Bach s incredible output, which is a great way to begin your Sunday morning. After the Baroque in Boston hour (Sundays at 7am), WCRB really gets cooking as James David Jacobs serves up an ideal blend of music and information to start your day on Boston Sunday Brunch. Whether you re going for a nice walk, jogging along the Charles or sitting at home doing the Sunday crossword, Boston Sunday Brunch should be a big part of the experience. It offers a smorgasbord of music spanning five centuries, along with information about what is going on in and around the city. WCRB s broadcasts of the Boston Symphony this month include a special performance of Richard Strauss s Salome led by BSO Music Director Designate Andris Nelsons. With a fabulous, international cast, this performance is sure to be one of the year s musical highlights. You can hear it on WCRB on Saturday, March 8, at 8pm, and again on Monday, March 17, also at 8pm. You may have noticed some music features that we ve introduced on WCRB in recent weeks, and there are two in particular that I d like to focus on this month. First, there is our CD of the Week. Each week the WCRB staff chooses a new release to highlight, and selections from that recording are played throughout the day, every day. Then, on our website, you ll find in-depth information about the recording and the artist. It s a way for you to discover and enjoy recordings that are new and exceptional. Our second new feature is Live at Five, heard weekdays at 5pm. Cathy Fuller plays a specially selected performance that we recorded here at WGBH in our Fraser Performance Studio. These are unique recordings available exclusively on WCRB, and the performances feature a terrific mix of artists playing works from the well known to the unusual. Make Live at Five part of your afternoons. There are lots of exciting features and programs to look forward to in the months ahead, so stay tuned to WCRB 99.5 and have a music-filled and wonderful March! 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Coming in Clear on the Cape By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial If you re here, you ll hear us. That s because WCAI s broadcast signal is stronger than ever, thanks to the recent installation of a more powerful and reliable transmitter. We re not only coming in clear for all our loyal listeners but reaching a vast new audience. WCAI s award-winning, locally focused programming now can be heard by 00,000 new listeners on Cape Cod, Nantucket, Martha s Vineyard, the South Coast and parts of coastal Rhode Island. Our Federal Communications Commission approved signal power boost went into effect in January. We are extremely proud of the local service we offer, and we re happy it s now available to those who have not been able to hear us, says Phil Redo, general manager for WGBH Radio. And we re delighted that those who had to put up with spotty coverage are now enjoying improved reception. WCAI, a service of WGBH, had been broadcasting at 1,00 watts and reaching approximately 75,000 listeners. The new transmitter and antennae, located on a Martha s Vineyard tower, are licensed to broadcast at 1,500 watts, giving WCAI the potential to reach as many as 470,000 listeners, including every community on Cape Cod and all of Martha s Vineyard and Nantucket. In addition, WCAI is now able to broadcast in high definition. This HD capability lets Cape listeners enjoy the classical music of WCRB 99.5 for the first time, on channel 90.1 HD. WCAI founder Jay Allison says the increased reception area is something the station and its staff have been looking forward to for a long time. What a long road to this point, Allison says. We ve been working on getting full, strong coverage of our area since the very beginning in 000. We used to send out advice on how to adjust your radio antenna to get better reception. No more! Just turn to 90.1 and listen.
