3 From the President The Shunned Two years ago, WGBH s American Experience broke new ground with The Amish, an in-depth look at the history, beliefs and traditions of this insular religious community whose 65,000 members live in the US and Canada. The emmy-nominated film pushed past images of vintage buggies and quaint dress to explore the lives and faith of the Amish. It also left the filmmakers with lingering questions about one of the group s most controversial tenets. Shunning is one of the Amish faith s defining practices, in which members of the community cut ties with those who choose to leave, says Callie T. Wiser, a producer on the earlier film and the writer, director and producer of The Amish: Shunned, premiering Tuesday, February 4, at 9pm on American Experience (page 10). We touched on this in the first film, but I was interested in delving further finding individuals whose stories would portray the breadth and variety of shunning. This is the story of people confronted with difficult choices on both sides of the practice those who leave and those who stay. The film is an emotional roller coaster through a set of universal experiences that anyone can understand, even if they re not Amish, says WGBH s Mark Samels, executive producer of American Experience. The longing of a parent for a child, the sadness of a child for the family he or she has lost and the pain of separation that lasts a lifetime all these things are at play in this film. The Shunned pushes us to think about a personal decision we may never have had to make something that American Experience s powerful stories have been doing for 5 years. And it all happens thanks to your generous annual support of WGBH. Jon Abbott February is fundraiser-free, thanks to our WGBH Sustainers. Become a Sustainer today at wgbh.org/sustainer. Also known as murderball on blades, sled hockey athletes battle just as aggressively as stand-up players, racing on sharp sled runners, shooting with either hand and sometimes nailing opponents with the serrated ice picks used to propel their sleds. The game is riveting, and so are the stories of this year s players, from a 15-year-old making his team debut to four wounded warriors injured in Iraq and Afghanistan. A New Generation The teenagers who tell their stories in The Graduates/Los Graduados are as diverse as the US Hispanic population itself: male and female, urban and rural, gay and straight, from different regions of the country and with ancestors from different nations. But all grapple with the challenges confronting young Hispanics today. This bilingual, two-part film also includes interviews with students parents, many of whom made great sacrifices to see their children graduate, and commentary from wellknown Hispanic Americans about their own high school experiences. Independent Lens/The Graduates/Los Graduados Pt 1: Mon, /3 at 7pm Pt : Tue, /4 at 7pm The Education of a School The Brooklyn Community Arts and Media High School (BCAM) is a bold new experiment in public education. Days before the school opened, its principal, a former DJ, took to the streets in Brooklyn s Bedford- Stuyvestant neighborhood to recruit students. What he offered was enticing: strong personal support, a rigorous curriculum and unconventional electives. Filmmakers documented BCAM s ambitious educators and students during its hope-filled founding year and again three years later, as its first seniors prepared to graduate. By then the school was flourishing, but so were its problems. Both inspiring and frustrating, The New Public asks what makes success possible, for a student or a school. America ReFramed/The New Public Tue, /4 at 8pm is produced and distributed by WGBH Boston, American Public Television and WNeT/New York in association with PBS and the National educational Telecommunications Association. on the Web visit online to find full-length and short-form streamed video, producer bios, program overviews and images as well as links to producer websites. Small Towns, Big Dreams New Mexico is beset by rural poverty and low graduation rates. But behind the grim statistics are complex human stories of hope and perseverance. In the project that became Our Time Is Now, students from five high schools in rural New Mexico participated in filmmaking and storytelling workshops during their junior year, taking turns in front of and behind the camera. The documentary that resulted features six of these students Hispanic, white and Native who reflect on themselves and their communities as they work toward finishing high school while striving to balance childhood dreams with adult responsibilities. Our Time Is Now Wed, /5 at 6pm and 9pm Between Two s From kindergarten through twelfth grade, Idris Brewster, a middle-class African American, trekked from his home in Brooklyn to Manhattan s Upper east Side to attend the prestigious Dalton School. Throughout, his filmmaker parents documented his experience of the school s high-pressure academics and overwhelmingly white and wealthy social world. Unfolding alongside Idris s story is that of his best friend Seun, who started at Dalton with him but later transferred to a predominantly African American public school, where he thrived. Thirteen years in the making, American Promise examines both the advantages and the obstacles that educational access can bring. P.O.V./American Promise Wed, /5 at 7pm Inside an Ivory Tower When filmmaker André Robert Lee was 14, he won what his family saw as a golden ticket : a full academic scholarship to Philadelphia s elite Germantown Friends School. After having had little contact with people who were either white or affluent, suddenly Lee was surrounded by both. I have wanted to tell the prep school Negro story ever since I first walked through that door, says Lee, and now, 0 years later, he has. In The Prep School Negro, Lee takes a pensive look back at his years at Germantown Friends and visits with current students of color to see how much has changed. 28 89.7 WGBH Boston Public Radio Innovation Hub Goes National Like a startup with a can t-miss product, 89.7 WGBH s Innovation Hub is attracting a lot of attention. Public Radio International (PRI) recently picked up the one-hour show about big ideas and emerging technologies for national distribution. Beginning in April, public radio stations throughout the country will be able to broadcast host Kara Miller s interviews with today s most creative thinkers, from educator/entrepreneur Sal Khan to scientist Jared Diamond to Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer. Former 89.7 midday anchor Cristina Quinn also will contribute on-the-ground reporting for the show. Innovation Hub grew out of Boston s love of big ideas, Miller says, and I m excited that we re now inviting listeners from across the country into conversations about the forces that will shape our future. The launch of Innovation Hub in 011 coincided with 89.7 s shift to news and analysis. The show quickly built a loyal following over the air and as a podcast. The Innovation Hub podcast has more than 600,000 followers on SoundCloud and has seen a 500 percent increase in monthly listens in just nine months. Thanks to its partnership with PRI, Innovation Hub made its satellite radio debut in December. The show can be heard on SiriusXM s public radio channel (XMPR), Saturdays at 10am, with repeats Thursdays at 9pm. In advance of its national radio premiere, Innovation Hub is producing two specials for stations to air in February. One focuses on The Beatles and innovation; the other looks at great African American innovators, including Arts & Ideas Mexico Uncovered The US and Mexico share close economic, geographic and cultural connections, but Americans understanding of Mexico is often limited. Mexico Uncovered takes listeners beyond what s offered in tourist brochures to reveal a vibrant culture. This one-hour special is reported by some of the most talented young journalists working in public radio today: Annie Murphy, Monica Ortiz Uribe and Marlon Bishop, all of them bilingual and regular contributors to Marketplace, Morning Edition, The and Studio 360. Mexico Uncovered is produced by award-winning public radio veterans Beverley Abel, Leda Hartman and Mary Stucky. Sun, / at 8pm Eric in the Evening A Night of Love Songs Let jazz be a part of your Valentine s Day celebration. Tune in for a night of songs for love and lovers, with musical selections chosen specially for the occasion by host Eric Jackson. Fri, /14 at 9pm Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., science researcher Paula Hammond and education pioneer Geoffrey Canada. So often, we think of innovation as being distinctly technologyfocused, says Melinda Ward, PRI s chief content officer. Innovation Hub shows how innovation is found all around us, from music to business models to educational approaches. We are excited to add this essential perspective to PRI s portfolio of programs and look forward to seeing its success. 29 WCRB 99.5 Meet WCRB s New Manager: Anthony Rudel A lifelong New Yorker whose career in classical music and radio includes executive positions at New York City classical station WQXR and Sony wide, Anthony Rudel is the new station manager of WCRB The author of four books, including Classical Music Top 40, Tales from the Opera and Hello Everybody! The Dawn of American Radio, Rudel recently spoke with WGBH s Matt Roy about his background and vision for WCRB. You landed your first on-air radio job at 19. How did that come about? When I was a student at Columbia University, I was bartending at a party and met the head of WQXR, who told me that they were looking for somebody young to put on the air. About a week later, I was in his office and he offered me my own show. I went on the air October 15, 1977, as the youngest host in QXR history. How did your appreciation for classical music develop? It s genetic. My father is conductor Julius Rudel. I started studying the violin when I was six. Yo-Yo Ma s father was my first teacher. I continued to play well into high school, until I decided I preferred baseball. But I ve always loved music and not just classical. I grew up listening to New York s great rock stations, which is how my love of radio developed. What was it like watching your dad work? My bedroom was adjacent to our living room when I was a kid, and I d listen to him rehearse with Plácido Domingo or Beverly Sills until midnight. He was a huge influence on me and still is. He s almost 93 and we have a wonderful relationship. I remember asking him, as he was about to conduct his 150th performance of La Bohème, How do you keep doing it? And he said, I conduct for the people in the audience who ve never heard it before. I take that to heart. Every day, someone is listening to WCRB for the first time. I want them to stay with us. I want them to say, How have I lived this long without this experience? If they do, I m doing my job. How do you respond when people say classical music is dying? It s not dying, it just needs to be presented a little differently; we need to open the doors and let people in. I analogize it to the wine industry. In the 1970s, if you wanted to buy a bottle of wine, you went to the wine shop and the clerk intimidated you. Then somebody got smart and decided to move away from foreign words and an almost academic approach to wine and let people simply enjoy the experience. Suddenly you no longer needed a degree to enter the world of wine, and that industry has exploded ever since. This is similar. It is all about creating a rich experience for as many listeners as possible: those who know the music and those who have yet to discover it. It s about playing great music and doing great radio. What does this combination sound like? I believe strongly in creating a rich and deep playlist. But I also believe that you have to fit the music into the listener s day. If I m sitting in Boston traffic at 7:30am, I want energy. If I m reading a book at 11pm, I want comfort. There s no repertory ever written that can cover the emotional spectrum as completely as classical can. But you have to know how to program it. Given the intense competition, how does WCRB stand out? We re connected to this area. Our hosts are local and, except for overnights, we re live and can react on the spot. For example, we created Boston Sunday Brunch to capture the mood of the day. 30 WCAI, Cape and Islands NPR Station Sunday Screenings with WCAI By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial We usually head to the pub when cold weather hits, but this year we re off to the movies. We ve put our popular WCAI Pub Nights on hold, and instead we ve partnered with six local venues to host free movie screenings across the Cape, Islands and South Coast. Our first annual winter film series, Sunday Screenings with WCAI, launched January 5 with a showing of the Downton Abbey, Season 4 premiere at the Martha s Vineyard Film Center. The screenings are a wonderful opportunity for our listeners to come together in a great setting and overcome the winter doldrums with a fun and informative event, says Sarah Tribuzio, WCAI s managing director of development. In addition to a film, the audience is treated to an in-person interview with the filmmaker or a panel discussion moderated by a WCAI producer or host. After the January 1 screening of Ocean Frontiers II, a film that tells the story of New Englanders working to keep their ocean and livelihoods alive, WCAI science editor Heather Goldstone led a discussion that featured local maritime historian Mary Malloy. We re all trying to juggle a million things in our lives, Heather says, and it s no different in the ocean. Ocean planning is a way of managing the competing demands on our marine resources, and New England is at the forefront of the movement. On February at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater, the documentary The List will present the experience of Kirk Johnson, a young American trying to save Iraqis whose lives are in danger because they aided the United States. I will be on hand to lead a Q&A with filmmaker Beth Murphy. Then on February 3 a series of short films about living with Alzheimer s will be shown at Highfield Theatre in Falmouth. Afterward, WCAI s Sean Corcoran will moderate a Q&A with David Shenk, the series creator and executive producer, and Greg O Brien, Brendan O Brien and Tim Armour from the Cure Alzheimer s Fund. The series will conclude in March with two screenings of the documentary The Last Days of Edward Gorey from local filmmaker Christopher Seufert. Tickets are free, but you must reserve your seat.
