2 P A G E 2 COME BLOW YOUR HORN The lead character in Neil Simon s first Broadway show was the author s alter ego, a character named Buddy Baker, who tells his father he is thinking about writing plays for television or the theatre. His father would prefer him to go into the family s waxfruit business, and warns him: Plays can close. Television you can turn off. Wax fruit lays in a bowl till you re a hundred. The play opened February 21, 1964, and ran for 677 performances. The movie, starring Frank Sinatra, was the 15th highest grossing film of Come Blow Your Horn is the fourth play in the Neil Simon semiautobiographical cycle that later carried him from Brighton Beach to Biloxi to Broadway. Simon actually moved to his brother s bachelor apartment in Manhattan, where he received onthe-job training as a ladies man.

4 P A G E 4 After more than a decade since I last took the stage, I could not have chosen a better theatre to make my return! My first experience working in-the-round was truly amazing. I instantly fell in love with the intimate, beautiful theatre. It takes great skill and conscious effort to remember that you have the eye of the audience on you all around. I adored the script for Blithe Spirit, and could not have wished for a more fun and entertaining role. So many movies and plots have been based on the concept of a returned loved one wreaking havoc on those who remain. It was a truly delightful classic farce! I had a marvelous time. It was an honor to work with a great cast and director. I feel so fortunate whenever I get the chance to perform in a show and leave with friendships I know will last a lifetime. My greatest thanks to Jennifer Teel for the opportunity to channel my inner flippant diva, to the delightful folks that provided us with dinner and refreshments every show, and to my wonderful cast mates. Last, but not least, thanks to Chuck Tweed, the man that keeps everything in rotation through all the highs and lows. My debut at Jewel Box Theatre in the world premiere of American Farce was amazing! Meeting the author, Michael Reimann, and getting to ask him questions about the play was very exciting. The cast of the show was so talented and fun to work with. The crew was also a very fun group too! Chuck is amazing and I can t wait to work with him again! Everyday, when I went to rehearsal, it was a new experience for me. I really enjoyed working with my fellow cast members. They were a lot like the characters they portrayed in some ways. Vickie Wilcox was the loveable Opal crazy but in a very artistic way, which I loved. Christine Jolly was amazing as the beautiful and eccentric Gloria, which helped my character to fall for her. Tad Thurston and Paul Smith were very natural with their characters. David played the absolutely hilarious doctor. Overall, the theatre was a great place. Jewel Box helped me with everything from accommodating my gluten-free diet to just being a great set of people to be around. The director, Jason Beagle, was so nice, funny, and very informative. I had a great time being a part of the cast of Everybody Loves Opal. I would recommend Jewel Box to any actor because it was such a great experience!

5 P A G E 5 MEET THE BRADENS Part of the Jewel Box family The Braden family has been coming to the Jewel Box since the youngest of their four children was three years old. We asked them some questions: When did you first start coming to the Jewel Box? We started coming about 10 years ago, when Clem was three years old. At first, we only attended one or two shows each season, but we soon started buying season tickets. It s a good bargain for excellent family entertainment! We particularly enjoy Jewel Box because it s only four blocks from our house, so we can walk to performances. We always have a lively discussion on the way home, which makes it a more memorable family experience. We have four children: Hannah 18; John 17; Paul 15, and Clem, 13. We started coming to Jewel Box when they were approximately 9, 7, 5, and 3. We also buy an extra season ticket so we can bring a friend to each performance. Which show is your favorite? Good question! When we talked about this at dinner one night, it was amazing to hear the different plays different people remembered, and what they remembered about them. The favorites are: Paul: The Philadelphia Story; John: Deathtrap; Clem: One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest; Sara: My Fair Lady; Hannah: And Then There Were None; David: Deathtrap. Is anyone in your family artistically inclined? We have a lot of music at our house. David plays violin and guitar. Hannah enjoys piano. John is a guitar major at Classen. Paul is quite good at 5-string banjo. Clem plays mandolin, harmonica, and stand-up bass, but not all at the same time! Sara s musical talent consists of reminding kids to practice and also driving them to lessons.

7 P A G E 7 Q & A with Terry Veal Director The play takes place in the 60 s. What was that time like for you? Well, since I was a teenager during that period, it was, of course, a crazy and exciting time. So many changes going on then in my life, as well as around the country. Let s just say, never a dull moment! What was your favorite song/movie from that period? Other favorite things? So many favorite songs/movies to choose from. Psycho, Bonnie And Clyde, The Graduate, and of course, Mary Poppins, just to name a few. The music was so eclectic then, from Elvis to the Beatles, to Peter, Paul and Mary, and the girl groups! Loved them all. Did you follow any of the fashion trends? If so, which ones? Not so much. I wasn t really a fashion trendsetter at that age. Not that I am now! But, looking back, there were some really great, and not-so-great, fashions at the time! What makes the show funny for you? Everything! All the relationships in the family. Plus, Neil Simon is a master at setting up a punchline. Which brother would have been you? I actually played Buddy in a production of Come Blow Your Horn while I was in the Navy. That s where I fell in love with the play; and I am extremely excited to revisit it again, thanks to Chuck and Jewel Box Theatre!

We now look forward to the last show of the season, followed by the 34th Annual Gem Awards banquet ~ the party of the year, which is May 16th at 6:30 pm at the Oklahoma History Center. 9 P A G E 9 ~GET FREE TICKETS WHEN YOU VOLUNTEER~ Volunteer and become part of the Jewel Box Theatre family! Choose a position for which you would like to volunteer, call us, and we ll train you! So easy, so fun, and totally free! BOX OFFICE: Greet season patrons and sell box office tickets. At intermission, sell soft drinks and our special Jewel Box blue cups. With sixteen performances per show, you can choose a week night show (7:00-9:30 pm, Thursday - Saturday.) or a Sunday matinee (1:30-3 pm). Get a free T-Shirt, too! PAINT CREW: Choose a show or two or three, and help create the set by painting the walls, floors, doors, and more. When you see the show, you know you helped make it come to life! PROPERTIES: Help the director by finding items needed on the set, or something an actor holds in his/her hand (A tray, glasses, writing pad and pencil, a hanky, etc.). We call them props. Working properties involves organizing/maintaining props during the run of the show. COSTUMES: Work with our resident costumer, Christopher Sieker, preparing costumes for actors to try on, then maintain, iron, sew, and catalogue for the show. HAIR AND MAKE-UP: Such fun to work with stylist Jacque Mooney with wigs and make-up. We have many period pieces this season, so there will be a lot of fun to create hair styles and make-up. 10 COME BLOW YOUR HORN Meet the Veteran and the Newcomer P A G E 1 0 Chris Harris (Mother) My Jewel Box experiences have been nothing if not diverse! I ve been given the opportunity to play widely varying roles ~ from the sweet Sister Margaretta in The Sound of Music to the medium, Madame Arcati in this season s Blithe Spirit; from Adele Simpson in The 3 Wives of Harry Simpson, an original script, to the tried and true Veta Louise in Harvey; from the villainous Felicia da Flea in the melodrama Dirty Work on the Trail to Jewish housewife, Norma Karchmer, in Coming Back to Jersey. I ve learned something from each of these roles, each director, and become a better actor with every new challenge. Thank you, Jewel Box, for allowing me so many opportunities to learn...and for so much fun!! Brett Boyles (Alan) My experience at Jewel Box has been fantastic! I am very thankful for the opportunity to perform at such a reputable theatre. Being not only my debut at Jewel Box but also my first full-length comedy performance, the show has presented it s share of challenges. Thankfully, the brilliant direction and patience of Terry Veal has kept me grounded throughout. I am constantly blown away by the talent level of the other actors in this show, daily striving to raise the bar enough to match their expertise on stage. Lastly, I sincerely hope the audience has as much fun watching this show as we had in creating it.

14 P A G E 1 4 DANA BILLINGSLEY ~ Volunteer I have loved volunteering at Jewel Box! The very things that make performing there such a pleasure comes into play on stage: You Can t Take it With You, The Philadelphia Story, American Farce, but also behind the scenes: very friendly people, the excitement of live theatre, and, of course, free t-shirts. It s a fun way to get to know the cast and crew AND earn free performance tickets for your efforts! Volunteering at JBT is yet another great way to support local theatre! ROGER OXFORD ~ BOARD MEMBER It would be hard for me to express, in brief, what Jewel Box has meant to me. Over the years, I have had the honor and privilege to not only perform on stage, but also work backstage with some of the finest people I have ever known. This experience has led me to understand and appreciate the hard work and dedication that is demonstrated and carried out by everyone involved in putting together a successful show as the professional level. Having now become a member of the board, I am learning another aspect of the whole process. A process that helped pave the way for greater levels in live theatre. This process, combined with the experience of being on stage and working backstage, has fanned the flames of excitement and has taken me to areas where, before, I could only have dreamed of. But then, dreams..isn t that what theatre is made of? I am in my element.

15 P A G E 15 Jime Wimmer Program Art Jime Wimmer is responsible for our stunning program covers. Her first, favorite, and most challenging cover was A Christmas Carol. As a die-hard cartoonist, I originally took to the drawing board with many sketches as black and white pen-and-ink drawings, but was never satisfied with its design. It always seemed too cartoony. Scrooge truly needed to be an iconic image where the character could be challenged by any actor. Current Broadway images like Wicked, Rent, and The Lion King, really have transformed into strong, graphic visuals and I wanted to bring that graphic connection to my first work for Jewel Box Theatre. I use this image of Scrooge as a constant reminder that SIMPLE can often be the BEST solution. For the lobby for the 58th season, Chuck will have a chalk board and has asked me to design something fun for each of the six shows. I will be using liquid chalk. Regular chalk comes in hard/stick form. Liquid chalk is offered in a smooth, liquid form that allows more coverage on a hard surface. The colors are brighter, shapes more solid, and well, it s less dusty and just as easy to clean up. Stan Carter Boot Camper for Come Blow Your Horn Do you ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes before a show makes it to opening night? What are auditions really like? How many people audition for the same role? How do actors know how to move from point A to point B and how do they know where the points are? How do they learn all those lines? If you attend Boot Camp, these questions, and more, will be answered for you. I cannot tell you how exciting it is to see rehearsals go from sitting around a table and reading through the script, to actually getting up and moving around the stage; to see facial expressions develop as rehearsals continue; to see actors transform themselves into the characters they are portraying. This was so fascinating to experience firsthand and also gave me an opportunity to make some new friendships with some very talented people. I urge you to take advantage of the Boot Camp program; it is not an experience you will soon forget.
