1 WELCOME TO PROVINCETOWN Welcome to Provincetown, on the outermost edge of Cape Cod, where you will find a place like no other. Known by many as P-town, Provincetown is the first landing place of the pilgrims; a Portuguese fishing village; America s oldest and largest art colony; a jazz, disco and drag show mecca; a safe-haven for creators, innovators, adventurers and outsiders; and now a site where inspired, inventive and independent film is developed, fostered and presented to the world. From June 13th to 17th, the Provincetown Film Society will present its 20th annual showcase of the best in American and International independent film with more than 100 feature-length and short films, parties, panel discussions and events. The defining honor of the Festival is our Filmmaker on the Edge award, honoring outstanding achievement, innovation, and vision in filmmaking. This prestigious award will be given to Sean Baker, a film artist whose admirable body of work pushes the boundaries of the medium. The festival continues to support its green initiative and is committed to reducing its carbon footprint on the Town of Provincetown. Take your part in helping us be eco-friendly! The Provincetown Film Society (PFS) began as the Provincetown International Film Festival in 1999 and is a non-profit arts organization dedicated to making Provincetown with its unique combination of art institutions, culture, history and natural beauty the global destination for creative exploration in film. provincetownfilm.org #piff2018 1

4 CEO EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR If the first film festival provided any indication that we d be celebrating its existence twenty years later, the fact may have been lost on PIFF founder PJ Layng. As Layng tells it, the first planned festival was in fact cancelled. Apparently, the owner of the town s cinema pulled out of the festival once she learned that a washashore from New York was hired to produce the event. Undaunted, Layng, along with a dedicated group of board members forged ahead. The next year, they found a suitable replacement in Connie White and a festival was born. On our 20th anniversary, we celebrate the subsequent successes along with the one failed attempt as a reminder that a festival is only made possible through the cooperation and support of a host of individuals. A debt of gratitude goes to: PJ Layng and Connie White, our founding board and staff, long-time executive director Gabby Hanna, hundreds of sponsors and patrons who have supported us over the years, PIFF s spiritual mentor and our most intriguing wash ashore John Waters and the marvel-worthy filmmakers whose laudable work makes the journey fascinating and worthwhile. Special mention must be made of our 20th Anniversary co-chairs Fermin Rojas and Jay Kubesch, and our emeritus board chair Rick McCarthy. In my fifth festival as Executive Director, I cannot imagine working alongside a more talented and passionate group of people than the PIFF board, staff and volunteer team. Heartfelt gratitude. CHRISTINE WALKER CEO/Executive Director June Provincetown Film Festival 2018

5 ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Hanging above my kitchen table is a poster from the first annual Provincetown International Film Festival. It happily reminds me that two decades ago a small group of people came together and envisioned a film festival in this idyllic and robust arts community. Their spirit and dedication to create a sustainable artistic event perched at the end of the world on the cusp of the summer season came to fruition in 1999 and fabulously thrives after 20 years! I was lucky enough to be there for the initial launch and fondly remember John Waters receiving the inaugural Filmmaker on the Edge Award and Bruce Vilanch on hand for a homespun version of Hollywood Squares at the Mews. The festival has evolved and expanded in many ways since that first sojourn (including a significant year-round presence and a cinema!), but the original intent of showcasing excellent films, celebrating incredibly talented filmmakers, and introducing Provincetown to visitors from near and far, remains the ultimate goal. Speaking of goals, as we work toward improving gender parity in film, we are proud to announce that all of our Spotlight selections this year including our Opening and Closing Night films are directed by women! A film festival is a collaborative effort and only occurs with the work of many talented and dedicated people. I am fortunate to have amazing collaborators on the programming team: from Andrew Peterson s ability to wear so many hats (and wear them well!) to Kim Yutani s (much-appreciated) focus on quality films and our new shorts programmer Heidi Zwicker who brings a fresh perspective and has folded in so smoothly. Together we present a program of new and exciting work from filmmakers we admire and are proud to share with YOU, our highly appreciated and engaged audience! So, please, sit back and take it all in! Provincetown remains a place so unique and so inviting we cannot wait to build on this legacy for the next 20 years! LISA VIOLA Artistic Director June 2018 provincetownfilm.org #piff2018 5

35 FOUNDING STAFF & BOARD Sponsored by Provincetown Film Society Board of Directors Provincetown has a long tradition of honoring those who have come before. The founders of long-standing Provincetown institutions are proudly displayed to this day. Provincetown hosted the Pilgrims and the foundations of American government still in place. It was also where the Provincetown Players performed the first Eugene O Neal play and launched the birth of modern theater. In this vein, we take this occasion of the film festival s 20th anniversary to celebrate the contributions of PJ Layng, her wife Maryann McCarthy, and all of our founding board members and staff. Your foresight and vision to execute an idea built on Provincetown s spirit of innovation and inclusion have made the Provincetown Film Festival what it is today. FOUNDERS AWARD ALIX RITCHIE & MARTY DAVIS Sponsored by The Walker Institute of Politics and Public Service, Luna Bar With the right components in place for a successful launch of the first film festival, it took blind faith and a $5,000 check from Alix Ritchie and Marty Davis to ignite the process. Since then, Alix and Marty s influence and unflagging support from year to year has enabled the festival and the film society to grow and flourish. From establishing the Faith Hubley Award and the Art Connect Video and Animation Installation space at the Waters Edge Cinema to joining the first Inaugural Patron Group to develop such signature programs as the Women s Filmmaker Residency Program and the Women s Media Summit, Alix and Marty have further imbued the film society with the same attributes that they hold dear a strong belief in the power of art to transform communities and further the ideals of truth and social justice. 36 PIFFplus FOUNDERS AWARD DAN WOLF, FOUNDER & CEO, CAPE AIR Sponsored by JetBlue, Cape Cod Five Supporting the arts is vital to the fabric of a community, says Cape Air s founder and CEO Dan Wolf who espouses that philosophy in both words and actions. Cape Air was among the first in Provincetown to support the Festival and did so with a number of complimentary airline tickets between Boston and Provincetown. Giving us space in a nine-seat aircraft comes at a cost for the airline but the generosity of Dan and the entire Cape Air team has never wavered. Encouraging all forms of art and ensuring they are accessible and available to everyone is an integral part of Cape Air s commitment to local communities. From the air brush paintings on several Cape Air planes, to the airline s support of theatre, dance and the visual arts, Cape Air, under Dan s leadership, continues to stay true to its roots as our community airline. FOUNDERS AWARD STEPHEN MINDICH Sponsored by Fermin Rojas, Jay Kubesch When PJ Layng approached Stephen Mindich, former owner of the stellar alternative weekly newspaper The Boston Phoenix, about publishing the first festival catalog, Mindich agreed to a 20,000 catalog-run thereby making him our first media sponsor. Paper is money, PJ recalled Stephen saying. This year, with our mobile-friendly app, the demand for paper has changed, but Stephen s commitment to the integrity of content remains as important to the festival as ever before. At a time when it s often difficult to distinguish between fake news and real news, Stephen s work reminds us that truth in the hands of great storytellers always prevails. Winner of last year s Persistence of Vision Award at the Evan Lawson Filmmaker s brunch, Stephen along with his wife Judge Maria Lopez will be presented with the Founders award on Saturday, June 16th. 37 CINEMA 100 AWARD JEANNE LESZCZYNSKI AND DIANE DiCARLO Sponsored by East End Books, Seamen s Bank In 2013, when PFS purchased and renovated the new Waters Edge Cinema, no one imagined that it would take another five years to erect a marquee. Prior to that, many people did not even know that a cinema existed in its Whalers Wharf location. Now, thanks to a generous gift from Jeanne Leszczynski and Diane DiCarlo and the creative talents of architect Frank Dill and designer Joe Meiring, the show starts at the sidewalk and extends inside where patrons will discover a flourishing ecosystem of adventurous audiences, independent productions, and an incredible diversity of original filmmaking. The marquee was also made possible by a grant from the Mass Cultural Council. ANCHOR AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING VOLUNTEER RAEANN PACIFICO Sponsored by Roderick s Payroll, Seashore Point Maya Angelou once said, People will forget what you said. They will forget what you did. But they will never forget how you made them feel. An artist and a volunteer with the festival for 15 years, by no coincidence, Raeann works the festival hospitality suite where she greets everyone with a heartfelt smile and then makes it her mission to ensure a positive experience. For her buoyant and graceful personality, for her tireless work ethic, and for the way she makes all of us feel, we are proud to present Raeann with the Anchor Award for Outstanding Volunteer. She went on to spend years trying to find someone to go on the record to reveal what many in the industry already knew. Kim used all of her investigative tenacity to report on the subject and reveal the alleged abuses by Amazon Studios Roy Price and Disney s John Lasseter. She is a pivotal voice in the #metoo/#timesup movement that saw the tipping point this past year as a small group of journalists were finally able to work together to get industry insiders to go on the record so they were able to report the truth. The Evan Lawson Filmmakers Brunch is honored to have Kim Masters talk in a candid conversation about her experience in Hollywood and what will come next for gender equity in the film industry after the revelations. 152 PECKER HISTORY So, what s the deal with the bird? That bird is Pecker, and he ll forgive you for not knowing much about him. He s the creation of Ultra Creative in Minneapolis, the firm that rebranded the Provincetown Film Society, Film Festival, and Institute for our 15th anniversary. Pecker arrived on the scene with a splash, selling more t-shirts in his first day on the market than were sold during the entire festival the year prior, proving that he s a hit with audiences. He also stars in the Festival s annual trailers even being nominated for a Golden Trailer Award (that s a thing and he s very proud of it). But, again what s the deal? Well, he s an artistic interpretation of shorebirds common to the Cape, with the coloring of an Oystercatcher and a name that honors indie film and Provincetown icon John Waters. Therefore, you might not be surprised to learn that his personality is marked by a strong independent streak with more than a touch of irreverence just like Provincetown. 152 Provincetown Film Festival 2018
