3 Cont d from page 1 Dear friends in Portland & Seattle, It took it a lot of work from everybody here at the Consulate to bring you this exciting program. I hope you will find it interesting and stimulating, both from a cinematic as well as a storytelling point of view. I would like to thank Marie Amicci, Honorary Consul in Portland, Czech School of Portland and Wayne Jehlik, Honorary Consul in Seattle for supporting the festival and helping with its promotion. Please, find a detailed program on the previous page. I look forward to see you all when I come to Seattle in July. I am also happy that the third edition of our popular Petrof Concert Series had such a fantastic start in February when the Czech-Argentinian pianist Fabio Banegas Jiříček performed works of Czech composers such as Dvořák, Smetana, Janáček and Benda. The series continued with performance of the exceptional Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl, and talented pianist Petr Jiříkovský on April 20, 2014 at my residence. I am already looking forward to concerts of famous Czech violinist Jaroslav Svěcený returning to the United States with his talented daughter Julia this fall. They will be touring the United States in October and will perform in Seattle on October 21, So please, save the date. The opening of a new exhibition of photographs by a renowned Czech photographer and Hollywood cameraman, the late Alexander Hackenschmied (in the US known as Sascha Hammid) took place on Tuesday, March 4 th, 2014 accompanied by film screenings of his most famous works such as Meshes in the Afternoon (1941) and The Crisis (1939). This valued collection of Hammid s photographs will be on display only through June, so please do not hesitate to visit the Front Gallery at the Consulate in Los Angeles if you happen to be travelling to LA. Consul General Met with the Senator Berryhill The Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles, Michal Sedláček, met on March 18, 2014 with the Senator of California State Senate Tom Berryhill (R- District 14), who was elected to the California Senate in In January 2014, he has been appointed the Chairman to the Select Senate Committee on California-European Trade. Senator Berryhill represents the citizens of Amador, Calaveras, Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, San Joaquin, Stanislaus and Tuolumne Counties. It is a large district that includes the Foothills of California, agricultural areas that contribute billions to the state s economy, and a multitude of scenic locations that are a significant part of California s rich natural beauty and storied grandeur. His meeting with the Consul General focused on enhancing economic cooperation and trade between the Czech Republic, the European Union and California. A discussion also took place how to increase ties between Czech and California companies and how events such as the upcoming film series Czech That Film, contribute to Czech-US relations and promote cultural exchange and economic activity. During his stay in Sacramento, the Consul General Sedláček also held discussion with the representatives of Jerry Brown s Governor's office, such as the director of external relations and international Alexis Podesta. They explored possibilities how to improve trade relations between the Czech Republic and California. The Consul General also met with Mr. Abdullah Lababidim, co-founder of the Czech Company Braci, with whom he talked about how to increase presence of Braci in California. The company has developed a wireless Braci, a unique smartphone application that recognizes sounds of our daily lives. The new Czech law on citizenship is also keeping us busy here at the Consulate. Many of you have already taken advantage of the new legislation and applied to regain your Czech citizenship. As we are receiving many phone calls and applications daily, please be patient when your request is not being processed as smoothly as we all would wish. To get more information about our events, please visit our website and Facebook page. Michal Sedláček Michal Sedláček, Consul General with the Senator Tom Berryhill Page 3

4 Czech School of Portland is Growing In Oregon, the spring started little later this year. In April the school joined in the Night with Andersen, globally recognized overnight event celebrating children s book festival and commemorating the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen. This year Mr. Andersen visited our school and children were given the opportunity to ask him questions and together they planted a magic tree - pohádkovnik. School year 2013/2014 has been very eventful for the Czech School of Portland (CSP), a small non-profit organization founded in 2012 in Oregon with the aim to provide Czech linguistic and cultural education, and to maintain Czech cultural heritage while strengthening multicultural understanding. This year, the school has opened three classes educating children with Czech background in the pre-k, kindergarten and school-age class. Due to interest coming from the general public the CSP was also able to open a Czech class for adults. Our curriculum has been enhanced by creating an after-school playgroup for children of all ages called School by Play. This program focuses on music, dance, theatre, and art activities in Czech language. Led by various instructors, it offers an additional extracurricular opportunity for your children to spend time in the Czech language environment, learn new skills related to the Czech culture, and make new friendships. On monthly basis, the CSP also serves a library with over 300 titles for kids and adults to choose from. The school has also been very busy in terms of further community involvement. Together with Polish Cultural Enrichment Program, Bobita Hungarian Language School, Polish-American IQPreschool, the CSP ended last school year by forming a loose alliance called Visegrad Group PDX. The first event this group facilitated together was a hugely successful, well-attended, and multicultural Visegrad Group PDX Festival, celebrating 95th anniversary of a new era for the Czech, Polish and Hungarian nations. The CSP children were performing with several Czech songs and were very warmly accepted by the audience. Our children then played, sang and received gifts at the traditional St. Nicholas celebration; they entertained members of the Czech Society of Oregon at their Christmas dinner; they sang for the audience of Portland Revels before their annual performance titled this year Christmas in Old Europe. And the schools recorded a CD with their many songs at the local community radio station KBOO. The hectic winter/holiday season ended with Masopust. The kids had a lot of fun mask-making, in a parade of masks, they learnt a Masopust song and watched a fairy tale from Bubáci a hastrmani, in animated drawings by Josef Lada. We cannot wait for the fruits! Easter celebration has already been an integral part of Czech cultural life in Portland for years, so the CSP could not miss it. The school kids performed with a short program and learned a bit more about the Czech cultural traditions, such as egg decorating, crafts and willow stick making. The school year is almost over but we still have more events coming up! Enrollment for the next school year will take place on May 31st at CSP after classes. With the Visegrad Group PDX we will be honoring our children by facilitating the first International Children s Day (June 1st). There will be a rich intercultural program created and performed by, with and for the children. A few days after that, the group will also participate in Portland Rose Festival Junior Parade (June 4th). Lots of fun can be expected there too. The last event of the year will take place at Grant Park in Portland where we will be projecting Jan Sverak s Kooky (July 13th), thanks to a grant received from the Multnomah County Cultural Coalition and Oregon Cultural Trust. This movie will also be screened during the popular Czech That Film festival which is coming to Portland (June 14th). For more information, please, visit our website at and follow us on facebook. 5 News from the Honorary Consul in Portland, Marie Amicci Our Czech School in Portland had another successful year and will be holding Open Days for showcasing the school and seeing the classes in session through the month of May. In April, they celebrated Easter in Czech tradition with decorating eggs, making pomlázky, and gathering their treats in Easter baskets. It would not have been complete without spring songs performed by the Portland Children s Choir Skřivánci, and playing traditional games on the school lawn. The Skřivánci choir is becoming a favorite in the community. The Auction Fundraiser Dinner held recently on behalf of the Czech School was also a big success. As the Skřivánci performed in beautiful costumes singing a medley of Czech songs, they stole the hearts of the audience and put a smile on everybody s face. The performances of Alfres Novacek, the Greathouse Duo, and Tomas Oliva added to an authentic Czech atmosphere so real, that some of the children were asking for Kofola, thinking that they were in the Czech Republic. Helena and Mark Greathouse will also sing Czech and Slovak songs on the Memorial Day at the Global Folk Club as a part of the Folk Music around the World celebration. They will be joined by singers from France, England, Ireland, and other countries. Next month, the Visegrad Group PDX will open its International Children s Day. Czech, Hungarian, and Polish children will celebrate their rich cultures and represent them in Portland in the context of the cultures from around the world. This rich program will have a puppet show, singing, dancing, acting, arts, and a variety of ethnic food. June is the time for our annual Czech Film Festival in the Portland NW Film Center. This year, Czech That Film 2014 will present six movies, featuring Honeymoon by Director Jan Hřebejk, Kooky, directed by Jan Svěrák, Colette, directed by Milan Cieslar, Like Never Before, by Director Zdeněk Tyc, and Don Juans, directed by Jiří Menzel. On the Opening Night, the audience will be treated to a feature film Lousy Bastards by Director Roman Kašparovský. The famous Czech actor, Jiří Mádl, who will visit from Prague, will join us at a reception that will follow, and will be available for any questions from the audience. The reception is traditionally prepared by the Czech chefs, Slava and Dasa Kropacek of the Glacier Haus on Mt. Hood in the Cascades. The audience is treated to a fine Czech cuisine with schnitzel and potato salad, Czech pastry, wine, and Pilsner Urquell beer. This year we will also savor Mrs. Becvarova s fine Domažlické koláče. Earlier last month, we had a chance to sample the culinary arts of the Kropaceks at the Glacier Haus. It has become our Czech-Oregon tradition to travel to the Cascade Mountains after Easter for the last ski run of the season and to stop at the Glacier Haus chalet to indulge in a delicious zabijacka-the Czech style. The menu features such delicacies as jitrnice, jelita, tlacenka, gulas, and of cause Pilsner Urquell bier and Czech songs. Now the snow is melting, so until next time Marie Amicci, Honorary Consul Visegrad Festival Major Changes in Czech Private Law The re-codification of Czech private law entered into force on January 1, 2014, and has introduced changes that have considerable impact on businesses operating in the Czech Republic, including for example requiring a mandatory review of their constitutitional corporate documents, contracts or general business terms and conditions. The new regulations of Czech private law have also introduced new legal institutes such as right of construction, or trust fund enabling new asset management opportunities. Whether you have a business in the Czech Republic or you are just thinking about setting up a business there, we would recommend that you learn more about these changes because they will have an impact on your activities. As the Consulate cannot provide the full legal expertise in this area, we would suggest that you seek out services od some of the reputable law offices in the Czech Republic. For example, the Schoenherr law firm based in Prague and other cities within the whole CEE region has recently published its annual legal publication Roadmap that covers many of the changes brought by the new legal framework and is freely available online at: Page 5

6 News from the Honorary Consul Wayne Jehlik in Seattle We are now well into 2014, and I am excited to report a variety of both past and upcoming events here in Seattle. As usual, I am thrilled with both the quantity and the variety of activities that we are enjoying in Washington State, the enthusiasm and participation that the community displays for the activities is, as always, greatly appreciated. On April 3 rd, Madeleine Albright, America's first woman Secretary of State ( ), came to Seattle to give a free public lecture at Seattle Pacific University, followed by an invitation-only business breakfast talk on April 4 th. Drawing on her extensive experience in public service, and her ongoing work in the private sector, Ms. Albright gave a unique and up-to-the-minute perspective on the issues confronting the United States and the world. Both events were sold-out affairs, with over 1500 people in attendance at the April 3 rd lecture, and likely that many again for the April 4 th event. April also saw the opening of Václav Havel s The Beggar s Opera, presented by the University of Washington s School of Drama. Running from April 23 May 4, this updated non-musical version of The Beggar's Opera is set in a farcical underworld where no one can be trusted. For his adaptation, Václav Havel borrowed characters and plot elements from the iconic 18th century The Beggar's Opera and the more recent Three Penny Opera to create an entirely new commentary on 20th century society. The May 1 performance also featured a post-show talk with local faculty to discuss not only the contemporary relevance of the play, but also the historical context under which Václav Havel wrote the play. The beginning of May also saw Bohemian Boudoir conclude its exhibition at the Tacoma Museum of Glass. This rare exhibit featured over 40 glass crystal perfume bottles and bedroom accessories, hand-crafted in the Bohemia region of then-czechoslovakia the 1920s and 1930s, and was well received at the Museum. The local Czech community was also treated to a special treat a private showing and display of the exhibition. After its display at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, the collection will be on its way to the Czech & Slovak Museum and Library in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. May also brings the annual Seattle International Film Festival to the Northwest, and Czech cinema is again represented. On May 16, 17 and 23, the Festival includes Clownwise (Klauni), a darkly comic look at taking chances late in life and having the last laugh. Additionally, Seattle audiences at the May 16 and 17 screenings were treated to a post-screening Q&A with actress Eva Jeníčková. Then, on May 27, the Festival will be bringing Burning Bush (Hořící keř) for its Seattle premiere. A riveting thriller plot with complex characters and sumptuously re-created period detail, Burning Bush is a taut, nuanced work that represents a valuable contribution to understanding the past half-century of Czech history, and it promises to be extremely well attended. Following the Seattle International Film Festival, Seattle gets to look forward to the Czech That Film series, presented in cooperation with SIFF and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles. The Seattle screenings will be held July 11-13, and brings another outstanding selection of films to the Seattle audience. For the Seattle Czech That Film, we are planning an opening night pre-screening reception and introduction by Michal Sedláček, Consul General of the Czech Republic in Los Angeles. Perhaps unique to the Seattle screenings, Czech That Film will also close with another screening of Burning Bush, before we are able to offer the film in theatrical release later in July. There are, of course, several other activities in the works, and I hope to be able to share details soon. In the meantime, I again extend my deepest thanks to all that supported our events and activities last year, and I look forward to seeing everyone at an upcoming event! Wayne Jehlík Seattle International Film Festival May 15 June 8, 2014 SIFF is a leading organization that brings the best international and independent films to Seattle. This year celebrates its 40th Anniversary and it is held from May 15 until June 8, Czech Republic is proud to present two Czech films. The screening of the Czech film Clownwise (Klauni) with a leading role of the Czech actress Eva Jeníčková already took place at the Seattle International Festival on May 16, 17 and will be screening this Friday, May 23 at 1:30 pm at Lincoln Square Cinemas (700 Bellevue Way NE, Lincoln Square, 3rd Level,Bellevue).
