3 FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR With each production, BoHo Theatre explores one of the Bohemian Pillars of Truth, Beauty, Freedom, or Love. The stories we share ask us to examine how these pillars affect the relationships we experience or encounter in our everyday lives. With Marie Christine, we delve into the pillar of Love. This is no ordinary love. Though, I suppose there is no such thing as ordinary love. When we think of love, we think of an ideal. A beautiful connection between two people that unites them in a way that makes life worth living. It s a sharing of thoughts, feelings, a sense of family, and often an intimate physical connection that creates an unbreakable bond that lasts until death. Michael John LaChiusa s Marie Christine examines a much darker view of love. It is a love tainted with power and prejudice. Though this show takes place in a different era, it s difficult to ignore the relevance of this story. Based on Euripides' Medea, LaChiusa s version is incredibly appropriate at a time where racial tensions and prejudice are under rightful scrutiny. Beyond being thrilled with producing this compelling story, I am also personally excited to have engaged Lili-Anne Brown to helm this show. One of Chicago s most prolific directors, she has recruited a stellar cast and design team to bring this tale to life. In the words of LaChiusa himself: It s one of my favorite, most personal scores and I can t think of a better director than [Lili-Anne Brown] to take it on; with the terrific BoHo producing... I m sure it will be a sensation. There is no better encouragement than that of the playwright and composer. With that, I welcome you to BoHo s production of Marie Christine. Peter Marston Sullivan Artistic Director, BoHo Theatre BoHo's 2005 production of LaChiusa's The Wild Party, directed by Stephen Genovese BoHo's 2010 production of LaChiusa's Hello Again, directed by Michael Ryczek and Stephen Rader
