3 FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR With each production, BoHo Theatre explores the bohemian pillars of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. The stories we share ask us to examine how these pillars affect the relationships we experience or encounter in our everyday lives. With CYRANO, we delve into the pillars of love and beauty. Though the tale of Cyrano is well known, this stunning new adaptation by Michael Hollinger and Aaron Posner allows us to truly focus on the intimacy of the story. As the authors so eloquently put it, the goal is to keep the poetry, but lose the pretension. By doing so, the microscope turns to the depths of this unrequited love and self-doubt that haunts Cyrano. Moreover, this version creatively takes a story that was written centuries ago and cleverly crashes it into a contemporary framework, making the story more accessible and immediate. This is a Cyrano meant for right now. I ve always loved the story of CYRANO. It s hilarious, witty, and is (let s face it) swashbuckling fun! With this version, though, I was moved by how much love seeped through. It is the longing for love, and the fear that it s not deserved, that really struck a chord for me. For even with all the intelligence, wit, skill, and bravery that Cyrano has, he s unable to defeat his one true nemesis: his own reflection The result is heartbreaking, and for me hearkens back to so many times I let my own self-doubt stop me from taking a chance. For today throw away your preconceptions, prepare your imagination, and enjoy CYRANO! Peter Marston Sullivan Artistic Director, BoHo Theatre
