3 FROM THE DIRECTOR I ve longed to direct this show for many, many years. Not just because of the beautiful music (though that doesn t hurt), but also because of the complex and layered characters that populate this parched world. For me, 110 IN THE SHADE is the perfect show for BoHo. It is riddled with complex characters that have rich and fascinating everyday" relationships. Understanding the depth of these characters - the hurt, heartache, yearning, loneliness, love, and hope - is akin to understanding our own connections with those closest to us. On the surface, this show is quite simple: a con-man comes to swindle a town and make a plain woman think she s beautiful. But when you delve deeper into a seemingly simple caricature of a con-man, for example, you find powerful feelings of inadequacy and loneliness that drive him to search for a clap of lightnin everywhere he goes. It s also fascinating to think about the psychology of a woman feeling plain, particularly in this day and age. Our Lizzie is not a simple stock character of a wounded, needy woman. She s complex, strong, funny, warm, outgoing, prideful, and perhaps most importantly independent. Still, deep under that surface is the fear of being alone. This story is far from simple. None of this is to say we re striving to eliminate the joy and laughter of the piece. Quite the opposite. In unearthing the depth of emotion and history of these characters, we re also finding the immense light and love that exists. In fact, it heightens this joy because it becomes more real. On a personal note As I say goodbye as Artistic Director to this company I have grown to love as a second family, I see 110 IN THE SHADE as the perfect swan song. BoHo became my theatrical family over the past decade. My relationships with those I worked with were similarly complicated, deep, and also richly rewarding. I found my best friends through this company, and even my wife! Working on this incredibly intimate show about a family feels like a warm, thankful, final embrace before I say farewell to this position. Peter Marston Sullivan Artistic Director, BoHo Theatre
4 FROM THE INCOMING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Hello! After three years with BoHo Theatre as a director, choreographer, and proud company member, I am honored and excited to assume the role of artistic director. But it is daunting to follow my dear friend and colleague, Peter Marston Sullivan, and his countless achievements of the past eight years. Frankly, it s difficult to match his spirit, strength, kindness, and vision. Fortunately, Peter continues as our artistic associate. I look forward to building on his accomplishments that will endure as a vital cornerstone of our theatre s foundation. BoHo s mission of telling bold, intimate, and insightful stories that examine and celebrate human relationships resonates deeply with me and mirror my own artistic values. This true connection with our audiences and nurturing the bonds we form together explain why I am eager to begin this new responsibility. I am incredibly inspired by the dedication of my fellow company and board members and am grateful for their continual support. We promise to continue our mission to produce and present some of the finest and most vibrant productions in the Chicago area. Also, I want to emphasize that this is your theatre and I look forward to listening and learning from you as we launch this new season.
