9 FOR A-LEVEL, BTEC & UNDERGRAD DANCE & PHYSICAL THEATRE IT NEEDS HORSES BY LOST DOG WORKSHOPS CINECLUB CineClub is the UK s first and only network for young filmmakers, teaching young people how to script, shoot, and edit their own short films. The Corn Exchange is regional coordinator for CineClub groups in West Berkshire schools and provides three opportunities a year for students to screen their work on the big screen in the main auditorium. There are many benefits of your school becoming members of CineClub, including: Entry into the young filmmakers awards at the BFI (Southbank, London) A full day of inset training for two staff members, to help you support students. A start-up resource pack, DVD, and regular newsletters for your school Opportunities for students to showcase their work at The Corn Exchange cinema Discount on CineClub master-classes Exclusive CineClub member access to NFTS accreditation of you and your student s work Up to 10 free films a year delivered to your school as part of the Film For Thought programme. For more information about CineClub, or to join please contact: sarahg@ cornexchangenew.co.uk Explore Lost Dog s unique creation process and the company s interest in creating work that exists between theatre and dance. Lost Dog are interested in creating worlds in which people are just as likely to express themselves physically as verbally. The idea is that the physical expression is spontaneous, just as speech is spontaneous. While interested in the idea of spontaneous movement, they also believe that movement should be crafted. Much like a skilled actor delivers a crafted piece of writing yet still convinces us, as the audience, that it is spontaneous. Creating movement that is both crafted and spontaneous is an overarching idea for these workshops. Each workshop offers a condensed version of our rehearsal process. 2 hours workshop: travel 4 hours workshop: travel Full day (6 hours): travel For information or to book, please contact Helen Holden on helen.holden@southeastdance.org.uk PRE-SHOW REVIEW GUIDANCE If you are bringing a drama or theatre studies group to review a live performance at the Corn Exchange or New Greenham Arts, we are now offering a free pre-show session highlighting key performance techniques, historical and literary context and lighting and set design details using information provided by the company. These sessions are designed to prepare your students for viewing the production with a critical eye and to help them pick up on key elements of the production - without ruining the end for them! To enquire about this free service for any performance contact Sarah Gregson, Learning and Participation Manager on sarahg@cornexchangenew.co.uk Book Online at 9

10 Arts and entertainment for everyone to enjoy... TOUCH AND SEE ART CLUB We are partnered with local charity Living Paintings and run a monthly group session for visually impaired adults who are interested in art and a chat over a cup of tea at the Corn Exchange once a month. We use Living Paintings tactile and audio resources and have visits from local artists, musicians and collectors. All welcome, visually impaired or not. For more information contact sarahg@cornexchangenew.co.uk or call AUTISM FRIENDLY FILM SCREENINGS These screenings are designed to make cinema-going more enjoyable for people with autism and their families, friends or carers. For Autism-Friendly Screenings, the soundtrack volume is reduced and low lights are left on in Screen One. It is fine for anyone to make noise or move around. Each season the autism-friendly screening is marked on the individual film pages. SIGN INTERPRETED PERFORMANCES Signed performances are theatre productions interpreted by a specialist sign interpreter using BSL (British Sign Language). The Interpreter is usually positioned at the front of the stage to the left or right, in a spotlight. You do not need to book for this service by phone but our Box Office staff will be able to advise you on the best places to sit in order to gain a good view of the stage and the interpreter. If you are aware of a production at the Corn Exchange that is coming up and you would like to bring a large group of Deaf people, it is occasionally possible that signing can be arranged. AUDIO DESCRIPTIONS Audio Description, in this case, is live description of a theatre production or film. The key elements of our service are: describing the key visual elements of the performance and a pre-show touch tour of the set and stage (touch tours usually take place at 6.45pm), and enable blind and partially sighted people to share the experience with their friends and family. You don t have to sit separately and can just access the description via a headset collected from Box Office with your tickets. We also offer five AD headsets in our cinema Screen One (on selected films only). You will need to book for audio description. Please inform the Box Office Assistant at the time of booking if you wish to use the AD service. 10 Box Office

11 See backstage, meet the cast and find out more about the shows POST SHOW DISCUSSIONS When choosing your shows to see, look out for the Get Up-Close logo indicating that there is a free post-show talk for that performance. This is a chance to get up close with the actors, directors, choreographers and sometimes writers experience as they talk about their work, the rehearsal process and the work behind the show. You can ask them questions or just sit back and get to know more about the whole process. Post show talks take pace straight after the performance and are usually about 20 minutes long. This season s post show talk: OTHER HANDS WRITTEN BY LAURA WADE (Posh) Friday 28 September, 8pm New Greenham Arts MEET AND GREET An opportunity for you and your children to meet the cast (in or out of character) after a show. Meet and Greets are usually available for just one performance, and will be marked on the show page in the main season brochure. If you want to make your child s trip to the theatre that bit more magical, keep an eye out for the Get Up-Close logo. We encourage everyone to get their hand in the air and ask the performers that burning question. This season s Meet and Greet: THE ENORMOUS TURNIP BY STUFF & NONSENSE Tue 30 Oct, 2.30pm Corn Exchange BACKSTAGE TOURS There is opportunity for you and your group to book a special behind-thescenes tour of the Corn Exchange. 12 PANTO WORKSHOPS If you are coming along to see the Pantomime with your primary school group there are a limited number of free schools workshops available. It is a really fun way to enrich the experience of attending what is often a child s first ever experience of theatre and a lovely way for our learning and participation manager to come out to meet teachers and pupils alike. The workshop looks at traditions, storytelling, and exaggerated performance and is a great way to boost confidence and group work skills through drama. One workshop is available per school, on a first come first served basis, for a maximum of 30 pupils. Available between 5-30 Nov 2012 Timings: Key stage 1: 1 hour Key stage 2: 1 hour 20 minutes. Cost: Free. For enquiries or to book a panto workshop sarahg@cornexchangenew.co.uk PANTO INSTALLATION PROJECT The annual Corn Exchange Panto Installation Project is an opportunity for nine local Year 5 children to create an art installation about our Pantomime, (this year Cinderella), alongside a professional artist. They create their work over the October half term at New Greenham Arts, planning, designing and making everything themselves. We work with new schools each year and anyone can enjoy the results for free, as over 18,000 fill the Corn Exchange Foyer and gallery space throughout the Panto run. This project is one of our initiatives to give wider hands on access to the arts. The installation will be open to the public from Friday 30 November to Friday 5 January.
