2 COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 2 APRIL 2016 Experience the Excitement at Brunswick High School Auditorium, as the Season Finale opens with captivating music that survived a colossal failure by its composer. On December 20, 1823, Rosamunde, a four act drama with music composed by Franz Schubert debuted at Theater an der Wien. It was removed from the program the very next day, and the music was lost for decades. However, Schubert s mastery of melody and song survived, and the incidental music from the play found homes in some of his later work as well. Today, audiences still enjoy the feeling and intensity of the music as a separate concert piece. The evening closes with the Fourth Movement of what many consider one of the greatest compositions in the western musical canon: Beethoven s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, also known as The Choral. It was the first example of a major composer using voice in a symphony, and today it is one of the most performed symphonies in the world. The words for the Ode to Joy were taken from a poem written by Friedrich Schiller in 1785, with some minor additions by Beethoven. It is sung by a quartet and chorus. Amazingly this final symphony by Beethoven was composed at the end of his career when he was almost totally deaf. It is said the audience gave him five standing ovations with raised hats and hands waving handkerchiefs so that he could see if not hear the thunderous applause. The famous choral finale is Beethoven s musical representation of Universal Brotherhood. With its thematic unity, the movement has been described as a symphony within a symphony and is a fitting ending to the composer s powerful work. Our soloists for this concert are Leslie Mattingly, Soprano, Victoria Livingood, Mezzo Soprano, James Hall, Tenor, and Nathaniel Roper, Bass. Leslie Mattingly is an attorney with a strong background in music and vocal performance. She began formal study of voice in middle school, continued her training through college and law school and works regularly with her coach today. Leslie recently performed with pianist Terry Readdick in a recital benefitting the Mozart Society Scholarship Fund and continues to perform regularly. Leslie has focused her attention on faith, children s issues, historic preservation, environmental issues and music. Victoria Livingood is an internationally-renowned Metropolitan Opera star and Grammy-nominated mezzo-soprano. Hailing from Thomasville, North Carolina, she skyrocketed onto the opera scene in 1985 as a winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and went on to make her mark on both the opera and concert stages. Victoria has performed throughout Europe, South America, Canada and the United States. She has held Master Classes at numerous universities and conservatories, recorded numerous discs, and designs a line of diva fashion accessories called Opening Night. James Hall has performed nationally and internationally in a career that includes opera, oratorio, chamber music, and solo recital. He is also an accomplished teacher having presented Master Classes in New York, Los Angeles, Kansas City, Washington DC, and Texas. James maintains a voice studio at the University of North Florida where he is a faculty member and he will be a voice faculty member this summer at the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan. Nathaniel Roper is Director of Choral and Orchestral Activities at Glynn Academy High School where his Concert Choirs regularly excel at competition. He is also Director of Music at St. Mark s Episcopal Church. A Savannah native, Nathaniel earned a Masters in Choral Conducting and has conducted nationally and internationally. He has performed with orchestras throughout the Southeast U.S. and Pennsylvania, including several appearances with the Coastal Symphony of Georgia.

3 COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 3 APRIL 2016 The President s Corner Salon Recital You will not want to miss The Symphony s next salon : a recreation of the nineteenth century style of entertaining, offering a small group of patrons the opportunity to enjoy private performances by superb musicians in an intimate setting. The Symphony s series of salons began in February with our own Aurica Duca, The Southeast Georgia Health System Concertmaster, in recital for guests who gathered in the comfortable living room of Carol Norton s lovely home to enjoy a very moving performance. During the reception which followed, patrons mingled well into the evening with Ms. Duca and friends to discuss the performance. What a memorable concert season this has been! Maestro Haza and the exceptional Coastal Symphony musicians have given us Majestic Masterpieces, Christmas Traditions, Dances and Dreams, and now, Joyful! Joyful! for our season finale. With Schubert s Incidental Music to Rosamunde and outstanding soloists and a full chorus performing Beethoven s Ninth Symphony, we are closing the Season on the highest of notes. All of our concerts were sold out this season, and we anticipate that the Season will also be oversubscribed. We encourage you to purchase your season tickets now to insure that you will not miss any of the excitement. The new Season Brochure with information about each concert will be mailed to you in mid-april or you may use the order form on page 6. Please be sure to save the date of April 30 for the Salon Recital featuring three of our Coastal Symphony virtuosos playing flute, oboe and piano. Don t miss this performance at the oceanside home of Anne and Tom Kitchin on Sea Island. We continue to Experience the Excitement! Sharon Flores L-r: Janice Lamattina, Carol Norton, M.J. Choate Guests mingle during the reception following the recital. The next salon, will be held on April 30 at the Sea Island beachside home of Anne & Tom Kitchin. The evening will feature The Symphony s principal flutist, Les Roettges, who holds his master s from The Julliard School and has performed with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Mexico City, Solisti New York, and the Boston Philharmonic. On oboe will be Ann Adams, also with The Coastal Symphony of Georgia and a highly sought after international judge and soloist. Scott Watkins, pianist, will be familiar to many from previous solos with our Symphony. The flute and oboe occupy their own unique sound or color often not fully appreciated in the context of a full symphony. In recital, these talented musicians create a beautiful tonal blend which guests will find both soothing and enthralling. The piano provides a mellow presence and a solid harmonic basis, over which the other instruments can sing. A reception following the recital will give guests the opportunity to discuss the evening s performance or perhaps just linger by the ocean s edge to listen to the music of the waves. Our sincere appreciation to the evening s co-hosts MJ & Sam Choate, Jack Dinos, Janice Lamattina, Janice & Larry Nicholson, Karleen & John Thompson and Hutch & Marcia Eisen for helping make this evening s recital possible. Saturday, April 30, :30 p.m. $125 ~ Seating is limited For reservations, contact Janice Lamattina at lamattina2@comcast.net

5 COASTAL SYMPHONY OF GEORGIA / 5 APRIL 2016 A Musical Conversation Symphony Reaches Out to Area Schools Under-served children attending two local schools have been introduced to the world of classical music through a special program envisioned by the Coastal Symphony of Georgia. Designed to ensure that children from communities and homes where classical music may not be emphasized, A Musical Conversation brought classical musicians to them. Eight Coastal Symphony of Georgia musicians visited the schools during the four week program with two presenting each week. The youngsters were introduced to string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. By giving the fourth and fifth graders an enriching, classical music experience, the musicians hoped to help them decide which musical instrument they might like to play in Middle School. The program was funded by grants received by the Symphony from several organizations including St. Simons Rotary, Episcopal Church Women of Christ Church, Frederica, and Myrtle Avenue Educational Fund at Schwab Charitable through Susan and Bill Gussman. It was developed in collaboration with the Glynn County Schools Department of Elementary Education and implemented at Burroughs Molette and Altama Elementary Schools. Symphony Board members Alice Barlow and Sung Hui Lewis coordinated the program along with General Manager, Jorge Peña.
