Experience the Excitement As the 36th year of The Coastal Symphony of Georgia approaches, please join me in welcoming Michelle Merrill, our new Music Director and Conductor.

Virtuoso violinists will bring us unforgettable solo performances. Our own symphony orchestra will dazzle us, as ever, with the great music of Prokofiev, Respighi, Schubert and Tchaikovsky.

We look forward to the Concert Season. From Beethoven to Bernstein, Mozart to Copeland, Michelle will bring us a season that will be thrilling from start to finish. Linda Muir President, Board of Directors I am eagerly awaiting the start of my first season as your new Music Director for the Coastal Symphony of Georgia. I hope to bring about a new wave of excitement for each concert program by including an array of music written throughout the years, to a piece composed just this past year. That is what is so enchanting about music as an art form it is ever changing and evolving. New pieces are being written, but even old favorites such as Beethoven s Fifth can sound new and fresh, while at the same time, nostalgic and familiar. Monday October 1, 2018 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. Experience the Worlds of Bernstein and Beethoven two giants of their eras who have given us timeless, unforgettable music.

The music is lyrical, playful, and vivid featuring fast-paced woodwinds, a lush section led by violas, and showy horns.

4 Monday October 1, 2018 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. Experience the Worlds of Bernstein and Beethoven two giants of their eras who have given us timeless, unforgettable music. The concert opens with Leonard Bernstein s Overture to Candide, his 1956 operetta about the misadventures of Candide and his sweetheart, Cunegonde. The music is lyrical, playful, and vivid featuring fast-paced woodwinds, a lush section led by violas, and showy horns. BERNSTEIN Overture to Candide BERNSTEIN West Side Story: Symphonic Dances BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 5 in C minor Symphony Dances from West Side Story, Bernstein s enduring Broadway Musical, will close out the first half of our concert. The show s sophisticated music, extended dance scenes, and focus on social themes marked a turning point in American musical theater. A truly American sound, it reflects influences of classical, jazz, and popular styles of music. The familiar opening motif of Ludwig von Beethoven s Symphony No. 5 in C minor begins the second half of our concert. The symphony was written in , a time when Beethoven was beginning his move from the Classical to Romantic Period, and it shows influences from both. The 5 th Symphony has a stormy, heroic mood including a foreboding, yet triumphant sonata form before moving on to variations on two themes, a lighter scherzo section, and a blazing finale. Sergei Prokofiev s Symphony No. 1 in D Major, was also known as The Classical Symphony. Written in 1917, the work is a striking combination of both its time and of the classical period, and it is widely considered to be the ultimate test for any string section. Monday December 17, 2018 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. Prokofiev Schubert Ottorino Respighi s delightful Trittico Botticelliano gives musical form to three Sandro Botticelli masterpieces hanging in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, Italy. A student of 16 th, 17 th and 18 th Century music, Respighi s music is bright, evocative, and eclectic, borrowing from both old and new musical styles. Respighi The concert closes with Franz Schubert s Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, written in 1816 and resembling, in character, Mozart whom he idolized. The work is scored for a small orchestra of woodwinds and strings, and it became known as the symphony without trumpets or drums. Schubert s diary entries just before beginning the 5 th Symphony mention Beethoven, the magical notes of Mozart s music, the pleasures of a walk in the country, and a party honoring Italian composer Antonio Salieri. Monday February 11, 2019 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. MOZART Overture, Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute MOZART Concertone for Two Violins in C major TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.

Mozart s familiar Overture to Die Zauberflote, The Magic Flute, opens the evening with its heavy, portentous beginning chords and triumphant ending.

6 Monday February 11, 2019 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. MOZART Overture, Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute MOZART Concertone for Two Violins in C major TCHAIKOVSKY Symphony No.4 in F minor Experience Elegance and Emotion as we listen to the exquisite music of Mozart and the powerful melodies of Tchaikovsky. Mozart s familiar Overture to Die Zauberflote, The Magic Flute, opens the evening with its heavy, portentous beginning chords and triumphant ending. Then soloists Aurica Duca and Clinton Dewing will enchant us with Mozart s Concertone for Two Violins in C major. A concertone is a concerto with a little more than expected in this case a cello and an oboe also have starring roles and was a very popular mid-18 th Century form of music. Mozart s Concertone is light-hearted and elegant with frequent ornamentation. Ms. Duca and Mr. Dewing are married to each other and both enjoy playing violin for the Jacksonville Symphony. Ms. Duca is also the CSG Concertmaster. Tchaikovsky s Fourth Symphony opens the second part of the program with horns, woodwinds, and later trumpets, unleashing the musical equivalent of lightning bolts in the Andante. Listen for the melancholy melody of the oboe in the Andantino, pizzicato strings in the Scherzo, and a Russian folk song in the triumphant finale. Tchaikovsky wished to dedicate the piece to his patroness, saying he believed she would find in it an echo of your most intimate thoughts and emotions. Mozart This concert will charm and engage us! Experience American Sounds... as the orchestra gives us a complete program of music by American composers.

With How to Relax with Origami, Brown gives us eight inviting musical vignettes wittily counter -pointed and imaginatively written for enjoyment. Be prepared to be surprised - and to smile.

Our soloist will be Sarah Crocker Vonsattel, a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra.

Conor Brown s music is motivated by the sweeping prairies, big sky, and jagged mountains of the American West. With How to Relax with Origami, Brown gives us eight inviting musical vignettes wittily counter -pointed and imaginatively written for enjoyment. Be prepared to be surprised - and to smile. Monday April 8, 2019 Brunswick High School Auditorium 8:00 p.m. Brown Barber Copland Samuel Barber s Violin Concerto has a more sophisticated mood. Our soloist will be Sarah Crocker Vonsattel, a member of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. The Concerto opens with an exquisite, haunting melody on a solo violin, later moving on to an achingly beautiful extended oboe melody. Following the quiet intensity of the first two movements, Barber gives us a continuous stream of rapid fire notes in the third that tests the virtuosic character of the violin. Aaron Copland s uplifting Fanfare for the Common Man opens the second half of the concert, and it is followed by his iconic Appalachian Spring Suite. Rearranged from the 1944 ballet score, the Suite has enjoyed enduring popularity as an orchestral piece with its distinctive moods and mountain saounds To close the evening, and our Season, the orchestra will treat us to pieces of American blues and jazz, and cameos of familiar tunes with Leonard Bernstein s Three Dance Episodes from On the Town: Times Square Toe-tapping is allowed! This concert will leave us wanting more!
