2 Coastal Symphony of Georgia / 2 November 2017 CONCERT NOTES Experience the worlds of Women, Women, Women! as these classical music selections present women in an intriguing symphonic collection. Maestro Luis Haza comments, This November program is all about strong women and how composers have been so impacted by women s stories, inspiring them to write great compositions. The initial offering launches the evening with Sleeping Beauty Ballet Suite, a concert work based on one of Tchaikovsky s most memorable ballets. The music of the suite displays the warm sweetness and memorable melodies so loved by his contemporary audiences. Tchaikovsky never succeeded in composing a concert suite for Sleeping Beauty on his own; he simply could not bear to eliminate anything from his original ballet. Jurgensen and Siloti, both men Tchaikovsky trusted implicitly, accomplished the final editing and publication. The result is a composition that makes full-throated use of the entire orchestra, closing with the gently swaying waltz so familiar to all of us. A fiery gypsy takes center stage next, musically speaking. A suite from Bizet s Carmen captures all the energy and drama we have come to associate with this perennial opera. The suite, almost entirely comprised of preludes and entr actes from the four-act opera, has been acclaimed for its brilliance of melody, harmony, atmosphere, and orchestration. And, of course, the quintessential Toreador Song is a favorite part of this highoctane symphonic arrangement. Following intermission, six overtures from operas concerned with women will charm the audience. We begin with La Cenerentola or Cinderella, and then hear La Italiana in Algeri, the story of an Italian lady who successfully uses her wiles to overtake her husband s captor in Algiers. La Traviata follows with the trials of Viloetta Valery, a courtesan who goes astray, and then the comical story of Overture to Beautiful Galatea, where a sculptor asks Venus to turn his lovely statue of Galatea to life only to have her returned to stone when she becomes too much to handle! The playful Overture to Pique Dame captivates us before the orchestra closes with the iconic and ever popular Can Can. So, what does a Sleeping Beauty woman want? Robert Heinlein once commented: No woman really wants a man to carry her off; she only wants him to want to do it! Thank you, Maestro Haza, we think your November musical program gets it just right.
3 Coastal Symphony of Georgia / 3 November 2017 SPONSOR SPOTLIGHT Southeast Georgia Health System Southeast Georgia Health System is a longtime supporter of the Coastal Symphony of Georgia and was our first sponsor to participate in the Named Chair Program. Southeast Georgia Health System will hold the Concertmaster s Chair through the 2018 concert season. Since 1888, Southeast Georgia Health System has grown and evolved, just like the communities they serve. The Health System continues to expand, bringing new resources, services, technologies and opportunities to the region. Headquartered in historic Brunswick, Southeast Georgia Health System, a not-for-profit health system, serves the residents of Brantley, Camden, Charlton, Glynn, McIntosh and Wayne counties with two acute-care hospitals (Brunswick & Camden), conveniently located Family Medicine Centers, Immediate Care Centers, two Senior Care Centers, Ribbon of Hope, a health care specialty boutique, and numerous physician specialty practices. In 2011, the hospital became the second in Georgia, and one of only 222 in the world, to offer CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System for the treatment of cancerous and benign tumors. The addition of Wolfson Children s at Southeast Georgia Health System in 2013 increased the availability of pediatric medical specialty services in Coastal Georgia. Thanks to a generous gift from philanthropist Hugh Nunnally, the Health System opened Nunnally House in 2014 to provide convenient, home-like lodging for cancer patients and family members of critical care patients from outside Glynn County, plus rooms for medical students and on-call team members. As our communities grow, Southeast Georgia Health System will continue to grow to provide the best care possible, reinvesting in its facilities and adding new physicians and services to meet the community s growing health care needs, without tax dollars. For an updated list of physicians, services and locations, please visit sghs.org or call 855-ASK-SGHS ( ). 7 Coastal Symphony of Georgia / 7 November 2017 THE PRESIDENT S CORNER By all reports, the Opening Concert of the new concert season was spectacular. Everyone was so happy to see and hear Maestro Haza and the entire orchestra again as they performed the beautiful Love Stories program. Soprano Maria Valdes, whose singing transported the audience to the world of La Boheme, magically became Puccini s Mimi as she sang one of opera s most famous and beloved arias. Prepare for another glorious evening of classical music on November 20 th when the program will be devoted to music that celebrates Women, Women, Women! With a sense of deja vu all over again, on September 11 th the Golden Isles was once again impacted by a damaging hurricane. Like Mathew, Irma put a wrench into the works and wreaked havoc with our fall calendar. Rescheduling the Society s Golden Elephant Sale to the Georgia-Florida Weekend presented a bit of a challenge. However, so many members of the Society rose to the occasion and worked so hard to get our game on and to make Golden Elephant fun and successful anyway. Kudos and many thanks to them! We Come Join Us for a Pre-Concert Dinner at Brunswick Country Club on November 20! The cost of the meal is $30 per person including tax and tip with reservations binding. Cash bar opens at 5:30. Dinner is served 6:00-7:15. Reservations can be made by calling the Brunswick Country Club at , ext. 9. Deadline for reservations is Thursday, November 16th. Served Tableside: Butternut Squash Soup, Stilton Creme Fraiche & Toasted Walnuts Fall Harvest Salad, Fresh Romaine Hearts, Apple-wood Smoked Bacon, Craisins, Granny Smith Green Apple Slivers, Toasted Pumpkin Seed, Maple Vinaigrette Warm Cornbread & Whipped Butter Served on Buffet: Pecan Crusted Catfish Tea Brined Pork Loin, Brown Sugar Bourbon Au Jus Stone Ground Cheese Grits Sweet Potato Soufflé Tasso Spiked Collard Greens Roasted Brussels Sprouts, Lemon, Pecorino Warm Apple Spice Cake with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream also thank all of those who donated items for the sale and who bought items at the sale to support the Symphony. We appreciate the generosity of the Golden Isles Presbyterian Church in welcoming us for the second year in a row and thank them for their patience in rolling with the punches to accommodate us when we had to change the date. The Coastal Symphony of Georgia owes a huge debt of gratitude to the entire community of the Golden Isles. In this time of Thanksgiving, we are most thankful for the contributions, commitment, and dedication of our community of patrons, sponsors, and supporters who sustain the Symphony and make possible its vital gift of music that inspires us and fills us with joy. Best wishes to you and yours for a most wonderful Thanksgiving Season.
