SOUNDCHECK: MONTAGE SOUND LIBRARY PHAT ANALOG III The analogue classics from the pre-midi era are fully in line with the trend. Their incomparable unique sound still occupies many musicians and lovers today. With the sound library "Phat Analog III" EASY SOUNDS focuses the Roland Juno-60, a six-voice analog synthesizer with a lot of charm, and prepares its sounds in the Yamaha MONTAGE. This new library is just as exciting for retro fans as it is for producers and live keyboarders who are interested in contemporary electronic music. All good things come in threes. After the first two Phat Analog productions of EASY SOUNDS, which concentrate on the Moog Minimoog and Roland Jupiter-8 (Phat Analog 1) and on Oberheim synthesizers such as OBX, OB8 or Matrix 12 (Phat Analog 2), a third Sound Library for MONTAGE is now available, which features a very popular synthesizer from the early 1980s. First of all, you surely want to know what the coveted "cult object" Roland Juno-60 is all about. Well, real flagships like the Roland Jupiter-8 or Oberheim OBX were only affordable for better earning studio musicians. Due to their dimensions and considerable weight, they are not really as transportable as you would wish for a tour. So Japanese manufacturers have introduced polyphonic synthesizers for the consumer class. Two candidates competed here: Korg Polysix, which appeared in 1981, and Roland Juno- 60, which was a smash just a year later. Both synthesizers are actually pleasantly unspectacular. By the way, I was able to play both instruments in the early 1980s, got along well at first go and liked their warm sound, which can be shaped very clearly and can be smoothly changed in live operation. 4 MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE TH E OR I GI N A L - T H E However, it is of no use for effect sounds and, of course, G O DF AT HER OF T H I S for all complex tones based on sophisticated modulations. P R OD U C T I ON The Juno-60 is a nice example of how good synthesizers are usually simply structured and have a certain The Roland Juno-60 offers only one single Oscillator characteristic sound and intuitive usability. In the pop (DCO) per voice, a Sub Oscillator and Noise Generator. music of the 1980s, this enormously practical machine With the help of an internal Chorus module (adjustable in two intensity levels) a very warm and voluminous overall sound can be achieved. The modulation of the Pulse Width via LFO also helps to create floating sounds. With the Filter (VCF) consisting of Frequency and Resonance control, the basic sound can be shaped very effectively and pleasantly. With this simple line-up, many typical analog synth sounds are created (according to the model of wind instruments, strings, organs, etc.), which can be played out its tonal strengths. It can be heard on Howard Jones, Vince Clark, Enya, The Cure, Eurythmics, and other acts and artists. In the meantime, there are several copies of the Juno-60, both as current hardware and software. Roland himself developed the Juno-106 including MIDI as a successor, but it doesn't quite match the sound of the Juno-60 and lacks some punch. used very musically due to their simplicity. The fact that For a sound project there is new potential. The sound of the the Chorus effect doesn't work with very low noise does Juno-60 can be reproduced true to the original, for which not affect the organic sound image of the Juno-60 at sampling is naturally the first choice. But it doesn't have all. Lead synths and basses work very well. The Juno-60 to remain too puristic. With the Yamaha MONTAGE, the also masters chords and typical sequencer sounds with Samples can be used extensively and surprisingly staged concise Filter Decay, especially in combination with the in Multi-Part Performances. Expectations are high: A good Arpeggiator - a nice musical extra. soundware is not only characterized by an authentic sound, YAMAHA.COM 4

but also by a certain artistic innovation to show the Juno sounds in a new context - and of course to be able to enjoy them as a musician. MONTAGE has great potential for this undertaking. Of course, I expect that these technical possibilities will be used more intensively and that a "new Juno-60" will be created within the MONTAGE. Otherwise, you could work with a mere software Juno-copy or, much better, play directly with the Juno-60. What have the two experienced MONTAGE programmers Richard James and Peter Krischker come up with? Let the facts and figures speak for themselves. THE CONTENTS AT A GLANCE As a fan of analog synthesizers, you will be served generously: As with the first two "Phat Analog" sets, you will find a lot of new sounds, which can be played without any great practical knowledge and can be refreshingly easily altered by the Super Knob. The chosen term "Performance and Sample Library" thus already covers the core of this collection. The lion's share is made up of the 128 Single- Part Performances, with numerous pads, synth compings, basses, synth leads, and a small selection of musical FX sounds. The first 24 Single-Part Performances convey the unique "retro flair" of the Juno-60 without any hesitation. It doesn't have to be that pure, you can add Reverb and Delay via AF1/2. A total of 51 User Waveforms, corresponding to 128 MB of Samples, are assembled. There are some Oscillator details such as the simultaneous activation of Sawtooth and Pulse Waveforms or the Sub Oscillator for deep powerful bass. The eight optional Drum Kits and the 48 User Arpeggios are not exclusively produced for the collection. They are from the set "Phat Analog II". After the sound file is copied onto a USB stick, subsequently loaded into the MONTAGE, the practical part can begin. SOUND EXAMPLES IN VIDEO FORMAT Of course, I found some favourites in the 184 Performances. Some of them can be seen in the two YouTube videos "MONTAGE Phat Analog III - Played Live, by EASY SOUNDS" and "MONTAGE Phat Analog III - Arranged, by EASY SOUNDS". The first Performance in the Live video (Intro), "Sensitive Dream ", with its eight Parts and Scenes each, makes it clear that you can conjure up an appealing synth-pop arrangement with a soft retro touch in no time at all. I would hate to speak of an "automatic accompaniment", but played chord sequences can be converted very quickly into an accompaniment. Whoever needs excitement, action or at least complete arrangement structures can dive into a beautiful world: The first 20 Multi-Part Performances contain stylishly coordinated Parts, which can be animated by the Arpeggiator to become song templates and can also be played dynamically by changing Scenes. You will be able to spend hours or even have to spend hours with these templates, because only after a few attempts you will be able to determine the direction where the journey can go. It is a lot of fun to go into the depths of each arrangement. I have never experienced the Roland classic in this dimension before. The Juno-60 has been recorded in "Phat Analog III" in minute detail - partly including Filter, LFO, and Envelopes. From the next Performance on, my impression becomes stronger that "Phat Analog III" moves very nicely in the downbeat sector with an individual mix of lounge and chillout. You can also call it a "Slow Trancer", that's another Performance which is presented in the video and which I like very much. YAMAHA.COM 5

"The Epitome" is led by the soft and chordally playable brass sound, which can be clearly altered by a change of Scene (here from Scene 8 to 7). In the background, the Arpeggio sounds tickle and fill up the arrangement transparently or "airily and obtrusively" - as with many of the Multi-Part Performances in this Library. "Analog Xperience" allows the Noise Generator to be fully enjoyed as a powerful spherical sound surface that can be spontaneously controlled by the Super Knob. As you can see, playing only a few notes is often better than going straight to the top with both hands. Ideally, you should start with a single line and listen to the sound and rhythm of the Performance. So, be careful and try the Scenes one after the other. Like most of the first 20 Performances, "Easy Filters" contains several Parts that differ in sound character, frequency range, and function and form a unit. A change of Scene also changes the drum groove from simple beat to double time feeling. Another clou is that the Super Knob is controlled by Motion Sequence (Knob Auto). You don't have to do it yourself, but experience automated sound sequences. Watch out for the many fast movements and the play of colours of the Super Knob in the video. All Single-Part Performances are suitable for live playing in cover bands. You probably like to take a rich pad sound like the "Envelope Pad" with a nice clear sweep. Unlike the original Juno-60, you can play opulent chords with more than six notes. "Bright Poly", another typical retro sound, allows you to easily vary the Filter Attack with the Super Knob. Or you can vary the Effect intensity (keyword: Chorus module of the Roland Juno-60) using the Super Knob, as shown in the video example "Juicy Juno Sub". It's always good that the sounds sound quite like Roland Juno, but can be edited more extensively. A crisp Filter Envelope as keyclick for organ sounds - even simple organ patches are part of the analogue synthesizer's repertoire. The typical basic sound of the Juno-60 comes into its own in the Performance "Classic Poly Arp", no matter how strongly you modulate the Filter with the Super Knob. Here, just one key on the keyboard is all it takes for an assertive Arpeggio. Later on, you will hear pad sounds created with PWM (Pus Width Modulation) as well as monophonic sounds that make the Filter shine. The individual patches are really simple, but this is especially advantageous with regard to their musical use. They can be easily and convincingly integrated into the context of a band or MIDI arrangement. Also take a look at the second video titled "MONTAGE Phat Analog III - Arranged, by EASY SOUNDS". These are screen videos. The recordings were recorded spontaneously live at the MONTAGE and recorded in a DAW and then extensively arranged. Each example shows the vintage charm of this collection in a different way. The video starts with a complex 8-Part Performance that represents the style of 80s synthpop. CONCLUSION: A LIBRARY WITH AT LEAST TWO FACES All in all, "Phat Analog III" expands the MONTAGE meaningfully and joins the "Phat Analog" series qualitatively. It clearly lives up to my expectations that the Juno-60's direct retro sound will not only be captured digitally, but also interpreted in breathtaking Multi-Part YAMAHA.COM 6

Performances. When you play some Performances you will surely come up with new song ideas. The factor of inspiration is certainly true. Hopefully, the concept of "Phat Analog" will not end with this high-quality Sound Library. Until the release of a possible next episode of Phat Analog, I hope you enjoy discovering the special retro sounds and the wonderful re-interpretation thanks to many of the features of the MONTAGE. Further information and demos can be found in the EASY SOUNDS Shop: Matthias Sauer MOTIF / MOXF SOUND LIBRARY PHAT ANALOG III Simultaneously with the release of the MONTAGE Sound Library of the same name, "Phat Analog III" is also offered for the synthesizers of the MOTIF family. The Sound Library can be bought for the following Yamaha synthesizers: MOTIF XF / MOTIF XS MOXF The Sound Library "Phat Analog III" is the first MOTIF / MONTAGE hybrid product. This means that when you purchase a version, you have free access to all available versions. For example, if MOTIF or MOXF users are considering purchasing a MONTAGE in the near or distant future, the MONTAGE version can be downloaded now without extra charge. The fact that the hybrid concept even included the MOTIF XS, which has been on the market for 10 years now, is particularly remarkable. The production effort was not insignificant, as extensive adaptations were necessary for each of the instruments. How does the MOTIF/MOXF version differ from the MONTAGE version presented by Matthias Sauer? In many areas the versions are almost identical The 51 User Waveforms are absolutely the same for MONTAGE/MOTIF/MOXF The 128 MOTIF/MOXF Voices correspond to the 128 Single-Part Performances of the MONTAGE version There are also no differences between the 48 User Arpeggios taken over from the Sound Library Phat Analog II YAMAHA.COM 7

The decisive differences logically exist between the Multi- Part Performances of MONTAGE and the Performances of MOTIF/MOXF, because the technical prerequisites are fundamentally different. While MOTIF/MOXF Performances can be realised with a maximum of 4 Parts and 5 Arpeggio variations, MONTAGE offers a maximum of 8 Performance Parts and 8 Scenes, which can be assigned to Arpeggio variations, among other things. Consequently, the MONTAGE Multi- Part Performances of Phat Analog III are significantly "bigger" and more complex than the MOTIF/MOXF Performances. The first 12 Performances of "Phat Analog III" are perfectly suited for expansion in Song or Pattern mode. Part 1 is a "Play Part" (without Arpeggio), while Parts 2-4 form a complex Arpeggio arrangement. After the Performance Recording has been completed, further Voices can be selected and additional Tracks can be recorded in the Mixing for Parts The notes played during Performance Recording or those created by the Arpeggiator can also be copied to the Tracks 5-16 using the Song Job "Copy Track". Track 01 can be used to copy played notes or chord sequences. If you want to duplicate the notes created by the Arpeggiator, one of the Tracks 2-4 is selected as Copy Source. See the Phat Analog III product detail page at for the "Extended Performances" demonstration. There you will learn how the extended Performances described here can sound. Usually two more Parts have been added. However, easily manageable 4-Part Performances also have their own charm. And if you as a MOTIF/MOXF user want to make it more complex, you can expand your Performances in Mixing Mode. This can be done very easily with the "Direct Performances Recording" function. First, the four Parts of the Performance are recorded. The recording is done in Performance mode. The result is then available as Song or Pattern, depending on the settings. Additional Parts can now be added to the Song or Pattern Mixing. Press the RECORD button for a Performance Recording to access the "Performance Rec Setup". Select a Song or Pattern for the recording. Then press START. The recording starts with the first note played on the keyboard while the click guides you. All sound settings are automatically transferred to the Mixing. The Extended Performance Demo "Sensitive Dream" is outstanding, it is based on the Performance of the same name and has been supplemented with four additional Voices in the Mixing Mode. This demo is also used as an intro of the video "MOTIF / MOXF Phat Analog III by EASY SOUNDS". Peter Krischker Further information and demos can be found in the EASY SOUNDS Shop: The notes created by the Arpeggiators are written dirtekt into the Song Tracks. YAMAHA.COM 8

INTERVIEW: RICHARD P. JAMES SOUND DESIGNER For some years now, Richard P James has been a member of the International Yamaha Voicing Team. He is English and currently lives with his family in Prague. We asked him about his work for the Phat Analog III Soundlibrary and his work on the extensive MONTAGE Factory Voicing project. Richard, congratulations on your great work for the Phat Analog III project in conjunction with Peter Krischker. How did the idea for this project come about? As Peter had successfully produced two previous Phat Analog titles, we discussed the possibility of expanding the series with another release, again focusing on quality analogue sounds, and in particular the classic Juno 60 synth. I was fortunate to acquire a Juno 60 some years ago and the sound is just fantastic. You used your own Juno-60 for the sample production. How did you proceed? Usually when sampling hardware synths, you want no filters, no effects, and no envelopes. This approach makes it much easier when creating multi-samples, but the Juno 60 has a really great filter with razor-sharp resonance, nice envelopes and an extremely distinctive chorus. So, in order to truly capture the sound on this iconic synthesizer, the multi-samples had to also include these features. What was your part in the complete work? The first stage was meticulous recording of the Juno 60 at my studio in Prague. Although the Juno 60 has digitally controlled analogue oscillators (DCOs), the tuning of each and every sampled note was checked before recording. Each recorded note was then exported and named. Once Peter had taken care of all the detailed looping, I was then able to start programming my Performances. Do you like Synthpop of the 80s? Many of your performances and demos seem to be influenced by this music style, right? It would be impossible to accurately present Performances based on the Juno 60 without reference to the 80s. The Juno series of keyboards were really the first truly affordable polysynths of the 80s and they can be heard on countless hit records. Hopefully, my Performances have captured the essence of that period. Did you compare the final MONTAGE Performances with your original Juno-60 patches? What is your estimation? During the recording phase, I did actually load up the raw sample data and compare it to the Juno sound I'd just recorded. Note-for-note, it was absolutely spot on. Of course, the Performances have to create the feel of the real instrument in terms of the envelopes and filtering. Again, it's about as close as possible without actually having the real synth in your studio. The final programming did, of course, go much further by adding multiple layers and filters with various on-board effects. YAMAHA.COM 9

The Juno-60 Soundlibrary is not your first work. You have been a member of the International Yamaha Voicing Team for some some years. How did that come about? I had been producing samples, doing music production, remixing and sound design work for some time, and I was fortunate to make contact with Yamaha at the early stages of the MONTAGE project. How did your work for Yamaha start? A key part of MONTAGE is the inclusion of the 8-Operator FM-X synth engine. As this is a core component of the system, I was sent to Bergedorf in Hamburg for some initial FM training. Coincidentally enough, I had been to Bergedorf many times over the last 20 years as it so happens that my father-in-law is an astrophysicist at the observatory operated by the University of Hamburg. How long did you work on the MONTAGE Factory Voicing project? My involvement in the project was around months, from initial training through to various new Performances when the operating system was last updated. You also joined the International Voicing Sessions in Hamamastsu (Japan) at the Yamaha Corporation headquarters. Please tell us something about this experience. Those content meetings were absolutely vital to how I approached my programming. Not only could I speak to the system designers, but I also got to meet other members of the team, each of whom brought something different to the project. And of paramount importance was to always imagine how my Performances would be played by the end user. I was very impressed with the final production unit. Yamaha have so much experience with synthesizers and workstations that it's no surprise it's such a great product. Have you already used MONTAGE for music production? I was able to create some deeply textured Performances with MONTAGE and I am definitely going to use these in some ambient / cinematic compositions. I don't think it would be possible to recreate these sounds using any other system. Did you plan more MONTAGE projects in the near future? Many players enjoy using FM sounds but are reluctant to do any programming. It's not untypical as terms like Algorithms, Modulators, and Carriers seem rather daunting and perhaps too mathematical. Consequently, we are now underway with a new FM-X Soundlibrary that will put the user creatively in control by assigning key 'Easy Edit' sound-shaping parameters to the front panel knobs and sliders. Richard, thanks for the interview! What is your estimation of MONTAGE after working with the prototypes for years and then receiving the final unit? YAMAHA.COM 10

REFACE SERIES SYSTEM EDITOR FOR IPAD & IPHONE For the Yamaha reface series there are various functions known to exist, which can only be reached by holding a certain key when switching on. Ibo Kai, the operator of the website, has programmed a System Editor for the reface series, which makes it much easier to access these system settings. When working with reface, as an ios user, you usually use the Yamaha App "reface Soundmondo" anyway. So it does make sense to edit system settings directly from the ipad or iphone. How does it work? YAMAHA.COM 12

DOWNLOAD If you visit the URL from the introduction, you will immediately find a link to the Editors in the News section. From there, depending on your choice of ipad/iphone, you will be directed to the page of the App this Editor was created in: MIDI Designer. This is a controller platform for ios that can be used to create your own interfaces. In principle, MIDI Designer can do everything from simple controller pages to extensive Editors for any device or instrument that supports MIDI. The following versions of MIDI Designer for Yamaha instruments are currently available: Pro 2 (the full version, for ipad + iphone) MDClav (stand-alone, Yamaha Clavinova Controller, ipad only) MDXG (stand-alone, XG Sound Set Controller, ipad only) MD77 (stand-alone, SY/TG77 Editor, ipad only) MDDX1 (stand-alone, Voice Editor for reface DX, ipad only) MDDX2 (stand-alone, Performance Editor for reface DX, ipad only) The following links will take you directly to the Editors described here: ipad: iphone: Beyond a desciption you have the possibility to download the App. A stand-alone version will soon be available for the reface System Editors. So it is worth checking these pages from time to time if you don't need the full version of MIDI Designer. MIDI CONNECTION The standard connection is via a USB cable with an Apple Lightning to USB camera adapter (*). Of course, the wireless connection via Yamaha UD-BT01 or MD-BT01 is also very convenient. (**) (***) (*) (**) (***) YAMAHA.COM 13

If you use a cable, the connection is automatically established, there are no adjustments necessary. The status of the connection is visible in the upper right corner of the display. "No Connections" disappears and a small virtual LED flashes when playing on the keyboard of a connected reface. The Bluetooth Interfaces must be registered in ios via a Yamaha App before connecting. Any App that is compatible with Yamaha's Bluetooth Interfaces can be used. In the following example "Piano Diary" was used. After starting the App, select the settings at the bottom of the display. Select "Bluetooth MIDI" under the generic term "WIRELESS MIDI PORT" to get the possibility to pair recognised Interfaces within range. This means that nothing stands in the way of a successful collaboration between the Editor in MIDI Designer and the reface series. The model-related pages of the Editor are well structured and labelled, so that further explanations of the individual functions are not necessary at this point. Not all reface-models have the same range of functions, therefore there are corresponding deviations. After this step, the App can be closed, the Interface is registered system-wide and can be accessed by any App that supports such a connection. The reface System Editor works immediately. If you want to check the connection, you will find the small "more" button in the middle of the MIDI Designer screen at the top. The entry "Config" in the opened menu opens the page with the connections ("Config - Connections"). YAMAHA.COM 14

Last but not least, a YouTube video is available, which can be accessed via the following link and explains the function: Hans-Peter Henkel YAMAHA.COM 15

MONTAGE PERFORMANCE RECORDING PART 2 Part 1 of this workshop from the previous edition of the Music Production Guide dealt with the basic functions of MONTAGE's internal Sequencer. In this second part, I will discuss more specific aspects of the MONTAGE Sequencer - also in interaction with computers and external sequencers (DAW). In the first episode of this article I mentioned already that newly recorded Songs are automatically saved internally in the MONTAGE. This automatic backup also includes the Song Tempo and the assignment of the Performance that was selected during recording. The function "Store Song & Performance Settings" does not normally have to be executed. However, if you change the Performance of a Song later on, or if you make additional Song settings such as Loop, Loop Start, and Loop End, these settings can be stored within the existing Song with "Store Song & Performance Settings". When loading a Song (UTILITY - Contents - Load) you can choose the Content Type "Song&Perf" or "Song". With the Content Type "Song&Perf", the original assigned Performance will always be loaded, even if you have not yet executed the "Store Song & Performance Settings" function for this Song. If you have saved changed Performance and/or Song settings with "Store Song & Performance Settings", they will be loaded instead of the original settings. YAMAHA.COM 17

When loading with the Content Type "Song", the Performance assigned to the Song is ignored. This means that the currently selected Performance remains active. MONTAGE CONNECT Using the free software MONTAGE Connect you can transfer Songs and Performances from the MONTAGE to your computer (PC/Mac) via a USB connection. MONTAGE Connect can be downloaded here: The Songs are transferred from the MONTAGE to the computer using the "Song Import" function in MONTAGE Connect. In this case, the Song recorded in the MONTAGE and the corresponding Performance can be transferred one after the other directly to the DAW as part of the current Project. Please refer to the illustrated application example in the MONTAGE Connect operating instructions (page 9). TRACK BY TRACK RECORDING In the last episode I mentioned that the MONTAGE Sequencer is not designed for complex multi-track recording. This should usually be done with an external Sequencer (DAW). However, there may be situations where fast and easy multi-track recording is required and no DAW is available. In this case, the MONTAGE Sequencer can also be used as a multi-track recorder with limitations. The tracks are not recorded together, but one after the other. The Preset Multi-Part Performances are hardly suitable for this purpose. If you want the procedure to remain straightforward, you must instead program a new Multi- Part Performance that is consisting exclusively of simple Single-Part Performances. This is done in a flash by adding Parts after tapping on the plus symbol in the Home MONTAGE Connect can save the received Songs on the computer as a Standard MIDI File (SMF) by dragging the Song Name icon to the desktop. If you have already recorded several Songs in the MONTAGE, you can transfer them to your computer in one go and save them as SMF in a flash. If you want to keep track of the Performance used, you should transfer the display. Limit yourself to the Parts you really need for the intended recording. The trick to record individual tracks is to disable "Keyboard Control" (green keyboard icon) for all Parts that are not to be recorded in the next step. This means that only the respective Part remains active for each individual recording. Performances to your computer with MONTAGE Connect at the same time and save them with SAVE as a new.x7b file, which contains only the current Performance and can be transferred to the MONTAGE with LOAD - if required. As an alternative to stand-alone operation, MONTAGE Connect can also be used as a VST PlugIn or Audio Unit (AU). This is very practical if you want to process Songs recorded in the MONTAGE within a DAW. YAMAHA.COM 18

Important: After having recorded a Part you probably switch to the Home screen to configure Keyboard Control for the next recording - do not use the REC button to return to the Sequencer! Instead, you must navigate to the "Play/ Rec" menu on the display. Otherwise a new Song will be created. display is already selected, you can click on the Song name to directly enter the Load display. Since the GM-ON Command automatically selects the Performance "Multi/ GM", it does not matter whether the Songs are selected with the Content Type "Song&Perf" or "Song". And of course, after the first recording, you have to change the Record Type from Replace to Overdub and move the Song back to its start position before recording the next Part. A very simple variation of single-track recording is to record a Split Performance in two recording sessions. This can be very advantageous, for example, if you want to play a lead sound with expressive modulations (e.g. modulation wheel, pitch bend) in the right-hand area of the keyboard and need both hands for this. In this case, the above-mentioned Keyboard Control setting and thus also the interim switching to the Home display is not necessary, since all Parts can always be active, even if only one Part of the keyboard is used per recording. PLAYBACK OF GM FILES Standard MIDI Files in the GM standard ("GM songs") can be loaded from a USB storage medium into the MONTAGE with the Content Type ".mid File" and played back with the PLAY/REC function (Song Sequencer). If the GM Song contains the usual GM-On Sys-Ex Command at the beginning, the Preset Performance "Multi/GM" is selected automatically. If this is not the case, this Performance can be selected manually from the Category "init". The GM Songs loaded as MIDI Files are automatically saved as Songs in MONTAGE. Some of the GM Songs appear with the name "No SequenceName", these can be renamed in the Play/Rec display after tapping on the name. Up to 64 GM Songs can be loaded consecutively. They remain available even after switching the instrument off and on again. Like the other Songs the GM Songs are selected from UTILITY - Contents - Data Utility - Load. If the Play/Rec RECORDING AND PLAYING BACK AUDIO By default, the MONTAGE Sequencer (Play / Record) is set to record MIDI. Alternatively, "Audio" can be selected to use the Sequencer as a simple audio recorder with a maximum capacity of 74 minutes (WAV format, 44.1 khz, 24-bit, stereo). The stereo output signal of the MONTAGE is recorded - including any possible A/D Input signals. The Audio File is recorded on a USB storage device connected to USB TO DEVICE. It's particularly interesting to record complex Multi-Part Performances, which can then be imported into a DAW as a WAV file for further use. The recording procedure is quite simple: Choose the desired Performance Press the RECORD button to access the Sequencer Select "Audio" instead of "MIDI" Press the RECORD button for "Record Standby" again Start recording with the PLAY button or set a Trigger Level in the display Start to play YAMAHA.COM 19

Press the STOP button to stop recording. The recording is automatically saved as a WAV file with the name "NewAudioRec" on the USB storage medium Press the PLAY button to start playback Copy the new WAV file to your computer, if desired After selecting a WAV File the actual playback takes place in the Play/Rec display by hitting PLAY. Tapping on the fields for Position and Volume, these values can be changed with the data wheel. During playback, the display and various controls are locked. The selected Performance, however, is active, as well as the Scene buttons, the Super Knob, and other controllers. Performances can be switched during audio playback in the Live Set with Seamless Sound Switching (SSS). Live Set Pages can also be changed. These are excellent prerequisites for live keyboarders to use WAV files as backing tracks. To select Performances via Category Search, the Sequencer must first be stopped. If you intend to record more audio immediately after the first recording, the following intermediate step is required to prevent the first recording from being accidentally overwritten: Tap on the name field in the Play/Rec display Tap on "Load" Tap on [New Audio File +] Enter a name for the next recording if you do not want to use the default name "NewAudioRec001" Confirm with DONE Start the second recording as described above PLAYING SONGS CREATED WITH EXTERNAL SEQUENCERS (DAW) IN MONTAGE I have already described how to play Standard MIDI Files in GM Standard with the MONTAGE Sequencer. If you want to play back your own external sequences with MONTAGE, this has to be taken into account when recording in your DAW. This UTILITY setting is mandatory before recording: Settings Advanced MIDI I/O Mode = Multi The alternatively selectable setting "Single" is not suitable for this purpose, as the internal MONTAGE Sequencer uses the MIDI I/O mode "Multi". Of course, it is also possible to play back externally generated Audio Files in WAV format from the connected USB storage medium. The Files are selected from UTILITY with Load and the Content Type ".wav-file". YAMAHA.COM 20

If Single mode is set when recording with the DAW, only one Track is created for all Parts. The MONTAGE Sequencer requires a separate Track for each Part with the corresponding MIDI channel. The Standard MIDI Files created with the DAW can be loaded from a USB storage medium into the MONTAGE with the Content Type ".mid File" and played back with the PLAY/REC function (Song Sequencer). Of course, you should select the same Performance you used for the DAW recording. USING SONGS RECORDED IN MONTAGE IN EXTERNAL SEQUENCERS (DAW) If you want to play back Songs that were recorded in MONTAGE in external Sequencers (DAW) or process them further, the current MONTAGE Song must first be exported as a Standard MIDI File (SMF) using UTILITY - Contents - Store/Save with the Content Type ".mid File". Alternatively, you can transmit the Song with MONTAGE Connect as described above. There are three Tracks corresponding to the Parts 1-3 of the Performance with the corresponding MIDI channels 1-3. Tracks 1 and 3 contain the MIDI Events created by the Arpeggiator, while Track 2 (Synth Pad) contains the chords. In the MONTAGE Performance the Arpeggiator has to be switched off before the DAW plays back the notes, because the Arpeggio notes are already present as Events. If the Arpeggiator remains switched on, the Arpeggio notes would trigger it again, which is hardly intentional. In the case of a Performance, the Arpeggiator can be switched off quickly. However, if you want to control several Performances in succession, you can switch the Arpeggio function globally in UTILITY - Effect Switch to "Arp Bypass". The Standard MIDI File is then to be imported into the DAW as a MIDI File. It is obvious to continue to use the "Multi" MIDI I/O mode in MONTAGE when you want to use the Song in a DAW. I used the Performance "Pearly Gates" as an example, here's how the recording of the three Parts done in the MONTAGE Sequencer looks in the DAW Cubase: YAMAHA.COM 21

I hope that you have now received all the important information you need to use the MONTAGE Sequencer in a meaningful way and to make good use of an interaction with external DAW software. YOUTUBE Hans-Peter Henkel has created a hands-on-video covering the topic Performance Recording. You can find it on Yamaha Music Europe's YouTube channel: Peter Krischker YAMAHA.COM 22
