CP88 CP73 STAGE PIANOS With the CP88 and CP73, Yamaha has created two stage pianos aimed at the live musician - easy to carry, easy to use, and easily an outstanding sound. "CP" is Yamaha's acronym for Combo Piano. The history of this instrument category began back in 1976 when the focus was on the "electrification" of a classic grand piano. The aim was to make it literally easier to transport than the original, but above all to have permanently installed pickups for easier amplification in live situations. Since sound generation based on samples has become possible, transport and amplification are no longer a real challenge. The new CP series from Yamaha provides an answer to the question of what standards are set for a Stage Piano today! YAMAHA.COM 3

EXPANDABILITY Out of the box, CP88 and CP73 feature ultra-realistic piano and keyboardrelated content, everything needed for the gigging keyboardist and discerning pianist. Taking the needs of the modern musician in mind, CP features a new updating system. SYNTHS, STRINGS AND MORE CP88 and CP73 feature synth sounds for covering any gig or session. Split, layer or solo warm pads, lush strings, deep synth basses, synth leads, brass and more. The one to one CP control interface allows real-time interaction for instant sound creation. For the first time, there will be regular Operating System Updates for the new CP series, which, in addition to the obligatory bug fixes and additional features, will contain new high-quality content in the form of sounds with their associated Waveforms. This new Update System guarantees an extremely high standard of quality. Carefully selected Samples as well as programming according to the respective Section will gradually complement the original content. The first additional content pack is available with CP OS v1.1 here. This update contains a new vintage and modern 1967 tine electric piano, a new character-rich reed electric piano and a classic Yamaha C7 grand piano: one of the most recorded pianos in the world. 11 FIRST STEPS The new operating concept allows a very quick start. A look into the manual is not necessary for the first step. The left side of the user interface contains the Main Volume knob, the LC display (128 x 64 pixels) and below that a multi-functional keypad, which is normally used to call up the programmed Live Sets. After switching on, the instrument is ready to play in this Live Set mode and the first Preset Live Set is active. Pressing one of the other eight Live Set buttons (1-8) will recall the corresponding Preset. The Live Set Page is selected with the [PAGE] +/- buttons. In addition to accessing Live Sets, the keypad provides various settings, save operations, and some additional functions that I will discuss in detail later. The controls of the tone generation occupy most of the control panel and are divided into three sections. Each of these sections controls specific Voice categories. All sections of the tone generator have an on/off switch. This means that a simple flick of the switch activates the respective section, and an LED located directly next to it immediately indicates whether the section is active or not. The Effect and Master EQ controls are located to the right of the tone generation area. All parameters are adjustable via buttons, switches, and rotary knobs. None of the parameters require a menu to be called up or an edit mode to be switched. However, for all knobs, the display gives feedback on the exact value that has been set. This means that intuitive and fast operation is not at the expense of accuracy when it is needed. YAMAHA.COM 11

QUICK START As already mentioned, you don't need to look into the manual to immediately have fun with the CP88 and CP73. Playing, switching, pressing, turning... you hear and see immediately what happens. Even saving a setting that you may have reached by chance is very simple. If you want to follow the example below, either turn the instrument on or - if it was already on - turn it off and on again. This way we have a common starting point. After switching on, the Live Set "1-1." is active, which offers the CFX Grand Piano completely solo. To do this, the Reverb is switched on, but no further tone generation. Now press the "ON/OFF" button of the "Sub" section If you want to try out the saving process - for the start without assigning a name: Press [STORE] Turn the encoder wheel clockwise until you reach "11-1. Init Sound" Press the encoder wheel, which corresponds to the [ENTER] function There is no query like "Are you sure?", your creation is saved directly. Attention: Even the Presets can be overwritten with user variants! LIVE SETS Almost all possible instrument settings can be stored in a Live Set. The total memory contains 160 Live Sets, the first 80 of which are assigned to Presets that can be overwritten if necessary. The first Voice of the Sub section - "Mellow Pad" - is immediately active. It is also shown on the display accordingly. Use "VOLUME" to adjust the volume of the Sub section to your taste Use the "TONE" knob to change the sound of the pad Set "ATTACK" and "RELEASE" that it fits your playing style Try adding an Insert Effect using the "ON/OFF" button Adjust the Effect settings using the "DEPTH" and "SPEED" knobs The Live Sets are recalled via the small button matrix 1...8, the 20 available Pages are selected via [PAGE] +/-. An alternative option is scrolling with the encoder wheel. Press it to confirm the selection. Live Sets can also be selected via MIDI (USB) via MSB/LSB/PRG Changes or by using a connected footswitch (e.g. FC5) to select the next Live Set in a given direction. YAMAHA.COM 12

The name change for a new or edited Live Set must be done before saving. The following steps are required: Press the [SETTINGS] button Select "Name" with the Encoder Wheel Confirm with [ENTER] Change the name using the encoder wheel and the Live Set buttons or 5, 7 and 8 respectively The display shows an unmistakable assignment of the buttons and their functions. Finally press [ENTER] The [STORE] button is used to save the current settings directly to the memory location selected via the encoder wheel without prompting. Without selecting an alternative memory location, the currently selected Live Set will be overwritten directly. Tip: The destination memory you selected with the wheel is not only displayed, but the corresponding Live Set can also be played. This gives you the option of checking to prevent accidental overwriting. YAMAHA.COM 13

MUSIC PRODUCTION GUIDE E S S E N TIA L KN O W LE D G E TONE GENERATION The tone generation in the CP88 and CP73 is divided into three sections. Each of these sections contains sounds from a main category as well as various sub-categories. Piano >> Grand Piano >> Upright Piano >> CP >> Layered Piano E.Piano >> Rd >> Wr >> Clv >> DX Sub >> Pad/Strings >> Organ >> Chromatic Perc. >> Others YAMAHA.COM 14

All sections have a similar arrangement of controls, which varies slightly depending on the type. A switch (in classic toggle switch optic) (A) below each section serves as an on/off switch. The main categories are selected with a rotary switch (1). A button with accentuated colour (2) arranged next to it is used to select the sub-categories, the corresponding number is shown in the display above. Below the rotary switch, there are buttons for splitting the keyboard (3) and for shifting the octave position (4) of the section. Below this are the two knobs for "Volume" (5) and "Tone" (6). All control elements that are directly associated with the tone generation have a deep black background. A special feature is the "Tone" encoder. Here, two EQ parameters are controlled as "One Knob Setting". Starting from a neutral middle position, a clockwise turn can be used to raise treble and bass together, and a counterclockwise turn to decrease them. SPLIT This button is used to split the keyboard for the selected section at the standard Split Point "G2". Two LEDs in the button and an unmistakable graphic in the display indicate the position to the left or right of the Split Point. Press the [SPLIT POINT] button (below [STORE]) to change the setting. This can be done both by using the encoder and by playing the desired key on the keyboard. Note: Since the split function only applies to one section at a time, the sound of another active section may still be audible in the inactive split range. PRACTICAL EXAMPLE: Select the Preset Live Set "1-1. Natural CFX". In the Piano section press [SPLIT] twice (the LED under "R" will light) Switch on the Sub section In the Sub section press [SPLIT] once (the LED under "L" lights up) Use the [SPLIT POINT] button to move the Split Point as desired Starting from the Split Point, the piano is assigned to the right Zone and the pad (Sub) to the left Zone. However, not necessarily in a conveniently playable version. The [OCTAVE] buttons can be used to move the octave positions of the sections as desired. Practical example continued: Press [OCTAVE / +1 +2] twice for Sub, so that the LED under "+2" lights up Press [OCTAVE / -1-2] once for Piano so that the LED under "-1" lights up This would be a suitable variant for the CP88. If necessary, change the parameters at the CP73. YAMAHA.COM 15

SOUND SHAPING (EFFECTS) The entire Effect chain begins with the Insert Effects assigned to the respective tone generation sections. The sum of the tone generation then goes through two System Effects (Delay, Reverb), and a Master EQ. Note: The Master EQ is not stored with the Live Sets, but allows global adjustment of the sound to different conditions. One possible application would be to connect the CP directly to a pair of active speakers without using a mixer. The Master EQ works with fixed frequencies for treble and bass as well as parametric mids and can be set separately. INSERT EFFECTS Each of the tone generators has a dedicated Insert Effect configuration. Depending on the respective Voice category, appropriate Insert Effects and associated parameters were arranged in the non-black area of each section. As with the tone generation, the operation and setting is extremely simple and intuitive. Each Insert Effect has a button [ON/OFF] (1) and ("Damper Resonance" excluded) a knob for [DEPTH] or [DRIVE] (2). Depending on the type of Effect, there are buttons for selecting different Effect Types (3) and a Speed/Rate knob (4). All selector switches (black) have a double function. If the respective Insert Effect is switched off, it can also be switched on directly via the selector switch, which may save you from pressing too many buttons. The following table gives an overview of the Insert Effects. Piano E.Piano Sub Insert 1 Insert 2 Insert 1 Insert 2 Insert 3 Insert 1 Damper Resonance Compressor Drive Auto Pan Chorus 1 Chorus/Flanger Distortion Tremolo Chorus 2 Rotary Speaker Drive Ring Modulation Flanger Tremolo Chorus Touch Wah Phaser 1 Distortion Pedal Wah Phaser 2 Compressor Phaser 3 YAMAHA.COM 16

Tip: The assignment of the Inserts to the sections appears fixed, which indeed applies to the default setting. But what if, for example, you want to play an acoustic piano with a phaser? No problem! The so-called "Advanced Mode" does not necessarily belong to the Insert Effects. Nevertheless, this mode solves the normally fixed assignment of all Voices to their categories/sections. This allows you to flexibly use the Insert Effects that are actually assigned to the sections. The Advanced Mode can be activated separately for each section. The absence of the numerical display in the respective section means that the activated Advanced Mode can also be recognised visually immediately. In fact, this eliminates the limitation to the respective category within a section. The selector button provides access to all Voices, which are also shown on the display with their names. In addition, ADV is shown on the display as soon as a section is in Advanced Mode. COMMON EFFECTS The signal of all sections passes through the two Effect Blocks Delay and Reverb. These can be switched separately (1) (2) and adjusted using the knobs (3). For the Delay, there is also a button that allows you to select between Digital and Analog Delay. The selector button (4) has a central function. It determines which of the sections is affected by the settings or parameter changes. Each section can be selected individually, but you can also select them altogether. PRACTICAL EXAMPLE: PRACTICAL EXAMPLE: Select an "Init Sound" and deactivate the Sections Piano and Sub with their switch Press the [SETTINGS] button and select "Advanced Mode SW" using the encoder Press [ENTER] Select "E.Piano" with the encoder and confirm with [ENTER] Turn the encoder clockwise, the display changes from "OFF" to "ON" The numeric display of the section goes out Select Preset 4-6 "A Tacky Piano" (all three sections are active) Deactivate the Delay by pressing its On/Off button For Reverb, set the encoder [DEPTH] to zero with a counterclockwise rotation Since all sections are selected via the selector button (4), the Reverb is set to zero equally for all sections. Play a few notes Tap the selector button (4) three times until only the Sub LED lights up Increase the Reverb for Sub to taste Test the effect by switching the sections and the selector switch differently You can now use the red Voice selector to select any available Voice and use one of the Insert Effects that are not available in the other sections. YAMAHA.COM 17

ENVELOPE Two Envelope parameters for the Sub section are not assigned to the Effects, but to sound shaping in general. The "ATTACK" (1) and "RELEASE" (2) knobs always provide the corresponding parameters for Sub without the need for a separate switching operation. Using the Advanced Mode described above, these parameters can also be assigned to the Voices of other categories. The values that can be set vary within defined ranges that match the Voice. DATA ORGANISATION Only Live Sets and their data are stored in the instrument's user memory. The subordinate Voice level is invariably provided by the Preset. Saving a Live Set was already part of two practical examples. Further possibilities exist via so-called "Jobs". These can be accessed as follows: [MENU] > Job > [ENTER] The "Live Set Manager" contains the following sub-menus: Swap - swaps the currently active Live Set with another Live Set of your choice (using the encoder) Copy - copies the currently active Live Set to another memory location of your choice (using the encoder) Initialize - initialises the currently active Live Set after asking "Are you sure?" All actions are confirmed with [ENTER]. A "Section Manager" applies the well-known "Copy/Paste" principle to individual sections. This Job is largely selfexplanatory. For example, if you want to copy a certain section from a Preset to a User Live Set, proceed as follows: DIRECT ACCESS For important functions and settings, there are some buttons next to the Live Set block, which I would like to briefly explain here. Select the source Live Set [MENU] > "Job" > [ENTER] > "Section Manager" > "Copy" > [ENTER] Select the section > [ENTER] A dialog box confirms the copy process. [PANEL LOCK] deactivates all control elements and thus protects them against accidental adjustment. Only the Master Volume encoder and the controllers for Modulation and Pitch Bend remain active. [TUNE] provides direct access to the overall tuning of the instrument. [TOUCH] allows you to select a Velocity Curve that is used to adapt the keyboard behaviour to the tone generation. "Normal", "Soft", "Hard", "Wide", and "Fixed" are available. [TRANSPOSE] changes the overall tuning of the instrument in semitones in a range between +/-12. Then select the destination Live Set and repeat the described steps with "Paste" instead of "Copy". YAMAHA.COM 18

Note: Only copies between similar sections can be made. Since the section is copied with all its data - including Insert Effects, for example - Advanced Mode does not help here either. Attention: All the Presets from "1-1." can be overwritten with the actions executed by the Jobs. The "Edit Recall" Job restores the last editing status of an unsaved Live Set if another Live Set has been selected in between. The last Job in the order, "Factory Reset", resets the entire instrument to the factory settings. This would also be a way to restore the Live Set Presets to their original state if something was accidentally overwritten there. However, this will also overwrite the Banks for User Live Sets from onwards. It is therefore advisable to create a backup beforehand to be on the safe side. The instructions for this will follow in the next chapter. The Job "Menu Initialize" could also be called a "Partial Factory Reset". It simply resets the settings saved under [MENU] to the factory settings. User data is retained. FILE MANAGEMENT This CP series supports four File versions which cover different memory areas: Back Up File = All User data (Live Sets) incl. system settings Live Set All File = all Live Sets without system settings Live Set Page File = one Live Set Page Live Set Sound File = a single Live Set The successful connection of a USB memory stick is shown in the display with a message. The path > [MENU] > "File" > [ENTER] leads to the file management. After selecting one of the File Types, "Save" and "Load" are available. The "File Utility" allows renaming ("Rename") and deleting ("Delete") a File. In addition, storage media connected can be formatted via "Format". All data on the medium will be deleted. YAMAHA.COM 19

MIDI/AUDIO INTERFACE An integrated MIDI/Audio USB Interface allows MIDI and audio data to be transmitted bidirectionally between the instrument and a computer via a USB cable. The audio connection via USB 2.0 allows lossless recording and playback of a stereo channel. The prerequisite is the installation of the Yamaha Steinberg USB Audio Driver, which is available from the Yamaha download page. Once the driver has been successfully installed and, for example, the DAW Cubase AI (which is included in the scope of delivery) has been started, a connected instrument is immediately detected. A dialog box offers a selection option directly at startup. The volume of the USB audio signal back from the computer can be adjusted using the following parameters: [MENU] > General > USB Audio Volume The CP88 and CP73 support the ios Class Compliance Standard. The audio signal of an ios device connected using the Apple Camera Connection Kit can also be played back via the instrument's main out. Its volume is also adjusted in this situation via the parameter mentioned above. SOUNDMONDO Soundmondo is a social sound sharing network that lets you store and recall CP88 and CP73 Live Sets and share them with other users. Each stored Live Set can be rated, named and given a custom image from your photo library. With the Soundmondo app for ios you can upload and download new Live Sets directly to CP88 and CP73 with an ios device. PREVIEW The Control assignment of the new CP series can also be implemented quickly and intuitively. An integrated Masterkeyboard Mode helps to integrate the instruments into a comprehensive setup. In a further episode, I will discuss this with a few practical examples. In addition, there is also some information on Operating System Updates in general and the first update to CP OS v1.1. 21 MONTAGE / MODX LIBRARY GUIDE PT. 1: BASIC TERMS AND LIBRARY IMPORT In the meantime, a considerable number of optional Sound Libraries for MONTAGE / MODX are already available from Yamaha and third parties, most of which are Sample-based - which means they use User Waveforms. The more Sound content available, the more important it becomes to deal with effective Library Management. The User Waveforms and User Arpeggios used in the Libraries play a decisive role here. Purchased or self-created Sound Libraries can be loaded into MONTAGE / MODX as Library 1-8 one after the other. Depending on the amount of User Waveforms used in the Libraries, the Sample Memory of 1.75 Gigabyte (MONTAGE) or 1 Gigabyte (MODX) may not be filled or instead is too low. In both cases a Library Management is useful - either to create free space for further Libraries by merging certain Libraries or to remove Performances not required by selection procedures and thus free up Sample Memory. In the first part of this three-part series I will first explain the basic terms essential for Library Management and then describe in detail - also using practical examples - how Performances of different Files can be compiled for an individual selection using the function "Library Import", without the use of external software. In the second part I will explain how an effective Library Management works with the "John Melas Waveform Editor" which is available for MacOS and Windows. I don't want to hide the fact that this is the ideal way for me - especially when it comes to organising a multitude of Performances and Libraries. The name "Waveform Editor" is pure understatement, because with the Editor you can manage complete Libraries including User Waveforms, User Arpeggios etc. perfectly! The third part deals with the import of Voices and Performances from MOTIF XF, MOTIF XS, and MOXF. The John Melas Waveform Editor will also play an important role here, as it allows you to merge the Voice and Performance Banks imported separately into your MONTAGE or MODX into a single Library. YAMAHA.COM 21

This has two decisive advantages: Firstly, only one Library slot is required instead of two, and secondly, the Sample Memory is significantly disburdened since the Waveform duplicates that inevitably occur during the separate import of Voices and Performances are eliminated. In the same display you can also see the already occupied Sample Memory under "Sample Memory". The topics of Library Management and Library Import have already been addressed in earlier editions of the Yamaha Music Productions Guide: Music Production Guide 06/16 Page 7: MONTAGE Quick Guide Part 3 File and Library Management Music Production Guide 04/17 Page 11: MONTAGE Library Import Combining complete Libraries Individual contents of these contributions are summarised here once again in compressed form. If you want to deepen your basic knowledge, you can read the mentioned articles again, which you can quickly find via the Music Production Guide History: If you want to go into more detail, you can call up the "Edit Waveform" display in the Performance Edit Mode for a Sample-based Performance: [EDIT] > [PART SELECT 1] > [Elem1] > [Edit Waveform] There you also have access to the Keybanks contained in the selected User Waveform. SAMPLES, USER WAVEFORMS, AND KEYBANKS In MONTAGE / MODX Samples are always integrated into Waveforms. A Waveform is a group of Keybanks. A Waveform contains at least one and a maximum of 128 Keybanks. A Keybank is a Keyboard and Velocity Zone to which a Sample is assigned to. The result is what is commonly known as a Multisample. However, this should only serve as background information. In the following I will talk about User Waveforms in connection with Samples. If no User Waveform is used in an Element, "New Waveform" appears instead of "Edit Waveform". From there, a Sample can be loaded from a USB flash device using "Load - Content Type Audio File", which is then immediately available as a User Waveform. The MONTAGE offers a total of 1.75 GB User Memory (Sample Memory) for your own Samples. MODX features 1 GB Sample Memory. A list of the User Waveforms available in the User Bank can be found in [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Data Utility] > [Waveform]. YAMAHA.COM 22

From "Edit Waveform" you can add more Samples to the new Waveform with "Add Keybank". The "Center Note" and the "Note Limits" can be set for each Keybank. This allows you to create your own Multisamples quickly and easily! However, these are more advanced procedures that you don't need if you just want to manage Sample-based Performances and Sound Libraries where the Waveforms are already programmed ready to play. USER AND LIBRARY BANKS The term "Bank" is used in MONTAGE / MODX in a different sense than in previous Yamaha synthesizers, where a Bank usually consisted of 128 sounds. The number of Performances of the MONTAGE / MODX Preset Bank is not fixed, as it is constantly being extended by Firmware Updates. The User Bank and the Library Banks have a maximum limit of 640 Performances per Bank. All Banks in MONTAGE / MODX are divided into MIDI Banks with Bank and Program Changes (MSB-LSB- PGM) in the background. The respective MSB-LSB-PGM values can be viewed in the Property display after tapping on the Performance name. The complete User data can be saved as a User File (extension ".X7U") on a USB flash memory device. In addition to the Preset and User Performance Banks, MONTAGE / MODX provides eight Library Banks that can be loaded as Library Files (extension ".X7L"). A Library File is a copy of a User's Memory. This makes it possible to "freeze" complete User Banks and to access them as if they were Preset Banks. The most important difference to a User File is that Performances of the Library Banks cannot be edited. In addition, only one Live Set Bank with a maximum of 256 Live Sets is available for a Library File. Only the first Live Set Bank of the respective source User File is automatically transferred. However, all eight Libraries can contain a total of 2,048 Live Sets, i.e. the same number as the User Bank. A Library File is created by saving the User Memory content as a Library File. The Library File can then be loaded and its Performances can be used as Presets created by the User. The Library Slots are occupied in the order of loading and identified by the File names. The contents of the User Memory can be saved as a Library with these steps: Press [UTILITY] Select "Contents" > "Store / Save" from the menu Select the Content Type "Library File" at the top of the display Tap on the field "name-of-your-usb-stick"_usb1 (this step is only necessary after the first connection of your storage medium) Tap on the field "[Save As New File]" Enter a name and confirm with "Done" The following data belongs to a User Bank: User Performances max. 640 User Waveforms max. 2,048 User Arpeggios max. 256 User Motion Sequences max. 256 User Curves max. 32 User Live Sets max. 2,048 Micro Tunings max. 8 The saved Library File can then be loaded with these steps: Press [UTILITY] Select "Contents" > "Load" from the menu Select the Content Type "Library File" at the top of the display Tap on the field "name-of-your-usb-stick"_usb1 Select the previously saved Library File (extension ".X7L") YAMAHA.COM 23

An edited Library Performance can only be saved as a new User Performance, which makes little sense since the saved User Performance would still fall back on the Library content (e.g. Waveforms, Arpeggios). However, it is not possible to save directly to the Library. For this reason, the original User File should always be kept carefully even after saving it as a Library File. Any necessary changes can then be made in the User File. The changed User File can then be saved again as a Library. Alternatively, Library Performances can also be copied to the User Bank using the UTILITY function "Library Import" and edited there. In this case, existing Library Waveforms and Library Arpeggios are copied and appear as new User Waveforms and User Arpeggios in the User Bank. LIBRARY IMPORT To avoid misunderstandings: "Library Import" does not import into a Library, but from a Library into the User Bank. Single, a selection, or even all Performances of an installed Library including the used Waveforms and Arpeggios can be copied into the User Bank. Select [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Library Import]. You will see that the Performances are sorted by name. By this, certain Performances can be found quickly Alternatively, you can set the selection list so that the Performances of the Library appear in the original order. To do this, tap "Date " to the right of "Name. The sorting by name remains for the time being. Now tap on "Date. The sorting changes and is now basically the same as the original sorting of the Library. However, the Performances here are not displayed in rows, but in columns You can now select the Performances intended for your Library Import by tapping their names. The marking is indicated by checkmarks with a blue background This is a good way to create a selection of Performances from several Libraries without external software and to create a new Library from them - or simply load one or more Performances of a certain Sound Library into an existing User Bank. Here are the steps to perform a Library Import: If you want to start a new compilation of individual Performances or complete Libraries, you should first initialize the User Memory. Select [UTILITY] > [Settings] > [System] and then tap "Initialize User Data". Attention: With this procedure all User data will be completely deleted! If you have not already done so, first save the User data as a User File with [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Store / Save]. Select the Content Type "User File" As an alternative to selecting individual Performances, you can also tap Select All. All Performances of the Library will then appear marked with a checkmark After the selection, tap on "Import to User Bank" and confirm the security prompt with "Import - Yes". The Import process starts and can take several minutes, YAMAHA.COM 24

expecially if User Waveforms are included in the Library. However, you should not perform this step until all possible Performances have been selected. If you instead select individual Performances one after the other and execute "Import to User Bank" in each case, storage-intensive Sample duplicates can occur After successfully completing the Library Import, the copied Performances including the User Waveforms and User Arpeggios can be selected in the "User" Category Save the result of the Library Import with [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Store / Save]. Select "User File" as Content Type and tap [Save As New File] Enter a File name and confirm with "Done" If you want to load the new compilation as a Library, also save a corresponding Library File. The original User File, however, should always be kept as the "master". Thanks to the different File extensions (.X7U /.X7L), exactly the same name can be used for the Library File. If there is a need for modification, this is done in the respective User File and both Files are saved with a new name or addition (e.g. the date of the modification) If all Performances are selected with "Select All", the complete Library including all Performances, User Waveforms, and User Arpeggios is copied to the User Bank. With Library-Import you can copy complete Soundsets into the User Bank and save them as a new User File and Library File. This makes sense if several Libraries (Soundsets) are to be combined to a new Library. The prerequisite is that the combined Libraries do not contain more than 256 User Arpeggios and that the available Sample Memory is sufficient. Here is an overview of the available EASY SOUNDS Libraries and free downloads from Yamaha MusicSoft with their required Sample Memory for the User Waveforms (MB) and the number of User Arpeggios they contain: The products Phat Analog II / Phat Analog III, Synth Xtreme / Dance Xpanded and Dream Vox / Melodic Techno each use the same User Arpeggio Bank. With the help of this table you can calculate the Memory consumption of possible combinations of Sound Libraries as well as estimate which combinations are out of the question due to the high number of User Arpeggios. The combination of a Library with User Arpeggios with one or more Libraries without User Arpeggios usually works well. Here are some possible Library combinations and their Memory consumption: COMBINATION 1 (212 MB) Evolving Soundscapes Nature of Chill Mystic Spheres YAMAHA.COM 25

COMBINATION 2 (376 MB) Phat Analog Phat Analog II Phat Analog III COMBINATION 3 (254 MB) Synth Xtreme Magical Pads COMBINATION 4 (169 MB) FM-Xperience MONTAGE Xpanded COMBINATION 5 (278 MB) Live Instruments Stage & Studio Organ Session Select the desired Performances and execute the Library Import as described above For this example, these eight Performances of the "Phat Analog" Library were selected and copied to the first eight memory locations of the User Bank via Library Import: PRACTICAL EXAMPLE: PHAT ANALOG COMBINATION With a combination of the products "Phat Analog", "Phat Analog II", and "Phat Analog III" I would like to show how the combination of Performances of different Sound Libraries is done by using the Library Import function. First I will describe a live-oriented selection of 24 Single Part Performances. Then I will show the complete combination of all Performances of the three Libraries. The individual work steps are not listed here again in detail. Please take them from the steps of the Library Import already described above. PHAT ANALOG LIVE SELECTION Initialize the User Bank with "Initialize User Data". Warning: This procedure will delete all User data completely! Load "Phat Analog", "Phat Analog II", and "Phat Analog III" as Library Files Make a selection of the desired Performances of all three Libraries and write them down in a self-defined list. You can copy the Performance names from the PDF supplied with the Sound Library In [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Library Import], tap on the "Phat Analog" Library Now select the Library "Phat Analog II" at the top of the display Select the desired Performances and execute the Library Import For this example these eight Performances of the Library "Phat Analog II" were selected and copied to the memory locations 9-16 of the User Bank via Library Import: YAMAHA.COM 26

Now select the Library "Phat Analog III" at the top of the display Select the desired Performances and execute the Library Import For this example these eight Performances of the Library "Phat Analog III" were selected and copied to the memory locations of the User Bank via Library Import: Compared to the total Memory consumption of the three Libraries of 376 MB, there is a saving of 251 MB. But the limitation to one selection should be worthwhile in any case, as long as the not selected Performances are not needed. But if you prefer to keep all three Libraries complete, but want to free two Library Slots, the following description of merging three Libraries will help you. PHAT ANALOG COMPLETE SELECTION Initialize the User Bank with "Initialize User Data". Warning: This procedure will delete all User data completely! Load "Phat Analog", "Phat Analog II", and "Phat Analog The compilation of the "Phat Analog Live Selection" is now complete. Don't forget to save the contents of the User Bank as a User File and as a Library File! Here is an overview of the User Waveforms that were automatically copied to the User Bank as part of the User Performances during Library Import: III" as Library Files, if this has not already been done for the "Phat Analog Live Selection" above Select [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Library Import] and tap on "Phat Analog". You will see that the Performances are sorted by name. Set the selection list so that the Performances of the Library appear in the original order. Tap on Date to the right of Name. The sorting by name remains for the time being. Now tap on Date. The sorting changes and now corresponds to the original sorting of the Library Tap on "Select All". All Performances of the Library will then appear marked with a checkmark Tap on "Import to User Bank" and confirm the security prompt with "Import - Yes". The import process starts and will take a few minutes. This process copies the The Memory usage for this compilation is 125 MB ("Sample Memory"). This value may seem high considering the small number of Performances. But you can see from this example that the Memory savings can be disproportionately high with a small selection, because the Performances contain elaborate Multisamples that are used several times within the Sound Libraries. complete Library including all Performances, User Waveforms, and User Arpeggios into the User Bank Now select the Library "Phat Analog II" at the top of the display Set the original sorting of the Library as described above Select "Select All" and start the Library import YAMAHA.COM 27

Follow the same steps for the "Phat Analog III" Library After the successful import of the three Libraries the copied Performances can be selected in the Category "User" Save the result of the Library Import with [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Store / Save]. Select "User File" as Content Type and tap [Save As New File] Enter a File name and confirm with "Done" If you want to load the new compilation as a Library, you must also save it as a corresponding Library File. Peter Krischker Before loading the new Selection as a Library, you can delete the no longer needed Libraries "Phat Analog", "Phat Analog II", and "Phat Analog III" in [UTILITY] > [Contents] > [Data Utility] by tapping them and then tapping "Delete" The "Phat Analog Complete Selection" now contains a total of 512 Performances. The used Sample Memory is 380 MB. Use Category Search to get a better overview. The compilation of a Live Set or the use of the Favorites function can also set priorities. By the way: Like all Premium Series products, the three combined Libraries each contain a certain number of complex Multi Part Performances. These are located in the original order in the Bank's first storage locations. If you also want to access the Multi Part Performances separately in the "Phat Analog Complete Selection", select the attribute "Multi" in Category Search. CONCLUSION The first part of the Library Guide is now complete. I hope that I have been able to help you take your first steps in managing Sample-based Sound Libraries. In the next issue the second part "Library Management with the John Melas Waveform Editor" will follow. YAMAHA.COM 28

SOUNDSET FOR MOTIF XF UND MOXF VP1 PHYSICAL MODELING Yamaha offers another free soundset for the MOTIF / MOXF that is dealing with a truly legendary Yamaha synthesizer: the Virtual Acoustic Synthesizers VP1. The VP1 sounds brutal. The sound impresses by an amazing vitality, coupled with amazing stereo renderings. There is no doubt that even after almost twenty years the VP1 can sonically compete with current workstations. It was and is a truly remarkable result of exquisite engineering. sound, by varying the parameter values, can be dynamically changed using the numerous performance functions of VP1. The author Prof. Dr. Peter Juung has carefully recorded sounds of the VP1 and created a sound set. The VP1 soundset includes 565MB of sample data. Everything was recorded in stereo and organised in 19 Waveforms, which rely on 536 Keybanks. From these Waveforms 48 Voices whose character was previously only found in the original were programmed exclusively for the MOTIF and MOXF. DER VP1 FROM THE INSIDE The VP1 uses "Physical Modeling". With the help of a physical model, e.g. of a stringed instrument, you can get an actual sound by setting the parameter values. The excitement, e.g. a pick or a bow brings virtual kinetic energy into the model, which is made to audible sound by the model. A sound generated with the "Physical Modeling" synthesis is not a simple snapshot that does not change like with pure sampling.
