Mrs. Slade specializes in working with older adults, neurological impairments, life limiting illnesses, and isolating conditions. She works at bedsides and in common areas of hospitals and care homes. Music s Capacity to Heal Robert Holliston, VCM Head of Collaborative Piano Studies/Music History/Vocal Coaching Explore music s profound capacity to heal, to form character and to affect emotions by joining Robert in looking at examples of music throughout history from Classical Greece to our own day. Mr. Holliston is the Head of Collaborative Piano Studies at the Victoria Conservatory of Music where he also teaches piano and music history. A popular public speaker, Mr. Holliston has given pre-concert lectures at the Pacific Opera Victoria since 1993.

3 The Joy of Music Enabling Assistive Technology Can Assist Team Member Can Assist will demonstrate some of its technologies and projects ranging from the simple to the complex but all designed to allow users with special needs to create, play and listen to music. CanAssist is an organization based at the University of Victoria dedicated to developing innovative, practical and affordable assistive technologies for people challenged by a wide range of physical and cognitive disabilities. 11:15 am 12:15 pm Soundbeam Demonstration Allan Slade, BMT, MTA Learn from Allan how the Soundbeam can be used in Music Therapy. This is your chance to see the Soundbeam in action and to have some fun trying it out. Mr. Slade specializes in the use of song writing, improvisation, music technology and recording skills for survivors of brain injury, children and adults with developmental disabilities, and residents of extended and intermediate care facilities. Which? Why? How? Kim Brame, BMT, MTA Come and explore with Kim successful techniques to support adults with autism spectrum disorders. Participants will experience how these techniques can be implemented using a variety of activities. Ms. Brame has over 25 years of teaching experience with children ranging from infants to teens and adults with a broad range of challenges. Training the Ear David Clenman, ARCCO(ChM), ARCT Ear training is an essential part of every musician s development. Learn techniques for improving this important skill through an exploration of various approaches, both traditional and novel. Mr. Clenman is a faculty member at the Conservatory and is an award-winning instructor at the University of Victoria where he is well known for his creative teaching methods even Pythagoras has been known to visit his classes! 1:30 2:30 pm Gesture Based MultiMedia Interaction Limbic Media Team Member Learn how to manipulate video and audio using body movements. The system will involve a cheap off the shelf 3D camera that can track body segments in 3D in real-time and map those movements to audio/video synthesis and effects. Come and also see a demonstration of an interactive painting interface that maps painting gestures, on a real canvas, to audio/video control. Limbic Media provides interactive media control technologies for use in multimedia entertainment markets, education, research, and the fine arts.

4 Musical Storytime Dr. Johanne Brodeur, Ph.D., MTA Bring life to a storybook using musical instruments, Garage Band and your voice. Join Johanne in a magical journey to engage children in making choices, composing music, and increasing motor and communication skills. Dr. Johanne Brodeur is the Music Therapy Department Head and the Children s Music Department Head at the VCM. Is Singing Only For Singers? Gergana Velinova, MAA Come and explore with Gergana vocalizing, improvisation and the voice as a natural instrument given to everyone to use according to abilities, capacities and interests. A longtime member of the VCM Jazz Faculty, vocalist, conductor, and music educator, Ms.Velinova has inspired audiences around the world with her wideranging artistic talents. 2:45 to 3:45 pm Epilepsy and Seizure Awareness Lissa Zala, M.Ed This dynamic presentation with Lissa will demonstrate some of the main symptoms of epilepsy and seizures: what the more common seizures look like, what may happen during a seizure, what can trigger a seizure, and what you can do to help. Ms. Zala has an extensive background in education and health. She is the Education Services Coordinator for the Victoria Epilepsy and Parkinson Centre. She has taught at Camosun College and Royal Roads, and has worked for VIHA. Music of the Spheres...of Health Terry Manzo, Instructor - Activity Assistant Program, Camosun College Music as an enhancement of one s own health and that of others will be explored by the participants in this interactive session with Terry that also includes exploring aspects of art therapy. Mr. Terry Manzo has 34 years of experience in health care, working in both front line positions and management. He is a Regional Support Program Coordinator with VIHA and instructs courses in the field of Health Care at Camosun College. Movement and Music Orff Style Julie Bomhof, BMT, MTA Participate with Julie in music group activities for young and old based on Orff Schulwerk music education. The session will include improvisation with body percussion, an introduction to Keith Terry's "Body Music", and an interactive body percussion dance. Julie Bomhof is a recent Bachelor of Music Therapy grad and a new member of the Music Therapy Department at the VCM. She enjoys integrating the creativity of Orff Music in her Music Therapy practice.

5 Multi-Sensory Studio Tours Sign up at the Welcoming Table for a time to tour The VCM Multi-Sensory Studio. Dr. Johanne Brodeur will lead tours throughout the day. Shop for Instruments/Books/CD s, etc. Sandy Pelley from Creative Music Therapy Solutions Inc. will be located in the lounge directly across from the ramp that enters the Music Therapy Wing.
