2 A Message from the Artistic and Executive Director Lore Ruschiensky Artistic/Executive Director The Cecilian Chamber series is excited to present new musical adventures for our appreciative and growing audience. The season will open October 3 with international opera star, Canadian baritone, Russell Braun; and in November you can experience the imaginative, energetic and unique ensemble that is the Akropolis Reed Quintet. In 2020 we join the world in celebrating the 250th birthday of Ludwig van Beethoven. In January Rob Kapilow presents What Makes It Great as National Public Radio s popular commentator and presenter goes inside the music and unravels the Appassionato Sonata. Rob will be joined by Regina s own Katherine Dowling in a performance of this great work. In March the Horszowski Trio presents piano trios in Beethoven 250 Still Crazy After All These Years. The season is rounded out with the Tesla Quartet presenting Beethoven string quartets in Beethoven, Benefactors and the Russian Connection. And stay tuned for more exciting Beethoven birthday celebration concerts in fall of The Cecilian Chamber Series continues its commitment to the community with the Music For Your Soul program, artists presenting masterclasses as well as Benvenuto and seniors' concerts. 4 With Carolyn Maule, piano RUSSELL BRAUN, BARITONE Sunday, October 6, :30pm The Singer and the Song Renowned for his luminous voice capable of the most powerful explosions as well as the gentlest covered notes, (Toronto Star) baritone Russell Braun is joined by pianist Carolyn Maule to perform a lieder and song recital that highlights Dichterliebe (A Poet s Love), one of Robert Schumann s most famous song cycles. Braun rightfully claims his place on the concert, opera and recital stages of the world. Juno Award winner and Officer of the Order of Canada, his intelligent and thoughtful portrayals have captivated audiences at the Metropolitan Opera, Opéra National de Paris, Wiener Staatsoper, the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, the Los Angeles Opera, Teatro alla Scala, and at the Salzburg and Glyndebourne festivals. Winners of the Fischoff Gold Medal (2014), the quintet is hailed for its imagination, infallible musicality, and huge vitality." Akropolis has performed from Juneau to Abu Dhabi and conducts extensive educational programs. In Under the Influence, Akropolis presents classical music bearing a wide array of influences, from rock and electronic music to jazz, tango, chant, and folk songs. Each work absorbs the characteristics of a different genre, style, or era, and then creates fresh, relevant music, reflecting upon the original and looking forward. 7 Photo Lisa-Marie Mazzucco HORSZOWSKI TRIO Sunday, March 1, :30pm Still Crazy After All These Years Celebrating Beethoven's 250th Birthday Jesse Mills, violin Raman Ramakrishnan, cello Rieko Aizawa, piano Hailed by The New York Times as impressive, lithe, persuasive, the Horszowski Trio has earned the praise of critics and audiences alike. The Los Angeles Times raves about the Horszowski Trio as an ensemble that is memorably monumental. A critic at Gramophone wrote, I long to hear more of the Horszowski Trio. The trio has performed tours across the US, Canada, Japan, India and Europe including London s Wigmore Hall. The trio will present Beethoven s first published piano trio and the Archduke Trio for which Beethoven insisted on playing the piano part at its first performance. The exquisite Notturno of Schubert, who was a great admirer of Beethoven, rounds out the program. 8 Photo Dario Acosta TESLA QUARTET Sunday, April 5, :30pm Beethoven, Benefactors and the Russian Connection Ross Snyder, violin Edwin Kaplan, viola Michelle Lie, violin Serafim Smigelskiy, cello Praised for their superb capacity to find the inner heart of everything they play (the International Review of Music), the Tesla Quartet brings refinement and prowess to new and established repertoire. The quartet performs regularly across North America, with recent international appearances in Austria, China, Germany, Hungary, South Korea and the United Kingdom. They will present one of Beethoven s most beloved string quartets dedicated to the Russian ambassador to Vienna, Count Razumovsky. Variations on a Russian Theme, written by ten of Russia s greatest composers offers the unique opportunity to hear the distinct styles of many musical geniuses. Rounding out the survey of Russian romantics is Tchaikovsky s exquisite String Quartet No. 1.
