2 Young Concert Artists, Inc Broadway, Suite 1500, New York, NY telephone: (212) website: RANDALL GOOSBY, violinist American violinist Randall Goosby first performed as soloist with orchestra at the age of nine, with the Jacksonville Symphony. When he performed with the New York Philharmonic on a Young People s Concert at Avery Fisher Hall at the age of thirteen, The New York Times raved that he exerted a masterly level of control and lavished an exquisite tone...his performance won him a deserved standing ovation for its sheer virtuosity. Upcoming appearances include the Bach Double Concerto with Itzhak Perlman and the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and he has previously performed as soloist with The Cleveland Orchestra, the Buffalo, Rochester and Orlando Philharmonics, and the symphonies of Nashville, Memphis, Grand Rapids, Albany (GA), Adelphi (NY), Arkansas, Modesto, South Bend and New World. In addition to formal concerts, Mr. Goosby shares his love of music in outreach programs for public schools, children s hospitals and music programs across the country. He is currently on faculty at Opportunity Music Project, a nonprofit organization which provides free lessons, instruments and mentoring for children from low-income families in New York City, and gives performances through Concerts in Motion, another NYC-based nonprofit which provides private house concerts for elderly and otherwise homebound patrons. Mr. Goosby won First Prize in the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions as well as the Buffalo Chamber Music Society Prize, Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle Prize, Harriman-Jewell Series Prize, Vancouver Society Prize, The LP Classics, Inc. Debut Recording Prize and the Sander Buchman Prize, which provides major support for his New York debut. At thirteen, Mr. Goosby was the youngest recipient ever to win the Sphinx Concerto Competition, which led to an invitation by Tony-nominated actor Delroy Lindo to perform at the 18th MOVIEGUIDE Faith & Values Awards Gala in Beverly Hills. He also received Sphinx s Isaac Stern Award, and made two appearances at Carnegie Hall as part of the organization s Young Artist Development Program. He has participated in The Perlman Music Program s Chamber Music Workshop, been featured on National Public Radio s From the Top, and been honored as Rising Star of the Stradivari Society. Randall Goosby began violin studies at the age of seven. He received a full scholarship to The Juilliard School s Pre-College program, continued at Juilliard as an undergraduate student of Itzhak Perlman and Catherine Cho, and is currently pursuing a Master s Degree there on a Kovner Fellowship there under the tutelage of two YCA alumni, Donald Weilerstein and Laurie Smukler. Mr. Goosby plays a Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu of 1735, on generous loan by the Stradivari Society. NOTE: When editing, please do not delete references to Young Concert Artists, nor special prizes. 3 The Teachers Who Made All the Difference Ask emerging artists what has been their biggest influence, and they will cite that one inspirational teacher or two or three who not only gave lessons in technique and art, but provided a lifelong approach to music and sometimes a career boost, too. by Steven Brown Ziggy Tucker The Violin Channel Randall Goosby Randall Goosby with teachers past and present following his 2016 recital at Juilliard: from left, Philippe Quint, Itzhak Perlman, Goosby, and Catherine Cho.
4 The most important thing I got from studying with Itzhak Perlman was love of music, says Randall Goosby. He just exudes that in whatever he does. RANDALL GOOSBY When violinist Randall Goosby was a teenager in Memphis, he travelled to Shelter Island, NY one summer to attend the Perlman Music Program. For the first time, he recalls, he encountered other budding musicians who were as talented as he or more so. That was a spark for me, recalls Goosby, a winner of the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. At the end of the Perlman program, the head of its faculty violinist Itzhak Perlman helped Goosby land a scholarship to Juilliard s Pre-College division. The youngster and his mother shuttled between home in Memphis and New York, where Perlman and Juilliard s Catherine Cho jointly taught him. Goosby continued with the duo as he earned his bachelor s degree. I think the most important thing I got from Mr. Perlman was love of mu sic, says Goosby. He just exudes that in whatever he does. And when Goosby worried that he might not be able to match violinists he heard on videos absolutely killing some of the toughest repertoire ever known, he says that Catherine Cho had the answer: Ms. Cho was the first to make it clear that you don t have to do anything these other people are doing, as long as what you re doing is true to yourself. During the years Goosby commuted between Memphis and New York, Cho recalls, there was not a week when he complained about the schlep, when he did not have a good attitude. He came in with positive energy. He came in with a big and generous heart, ready to work. He did that for all those years in precollege, and he continued that momentum in undergraduate. To expose himself to new ideas, Goosby is now pursuing his master s at Juilliard under Donald Weilerstein and Laurie Smukler. With hard work come great rewards in life, Cho adds. Goosby will get a taste of that next November, when he plays J.S. Bach s Double Concerto with the Grand Rapids Symphony. Alongside him at center stage: Itzhak Perlman. Randall Goosby takes a bow after performing at the 2018 Sphinx Competition Finals Concert with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra and conductor Carlos Miguel Prieto
