2 Statements & Search Criteria Mission Classical Revolution RVA seeks to integrate classical music with Richmond s vibrant music and arts scene by taking this universal art form out of its glass case and into the community, performing in spaces where people already feel comfortable going to hear live music. Founded in October of 2012, CRRVA did not become a 501c3 organization until February of Background Classical Revolution was founded in 2006 at Revolution Cafe in the Mission District of San Francisco. In October of 2012, Classical Revolution RVA became one of over 30 chapters worldwide. Impact We organize Richmond classical musicians who volunteer to give performances for the community. These musicians are made up of Richmond Symphony members, VCU/UR faculty, VCU/UR students, freelancers, music teachers, church music directors, and youth--more than 250 in total. Almost all of our performances are free, in the downtown area, and informal. In 2016, we reached about 1,600 people with 23 performances. Since forming in the fall of 2012, we have given monthly chamber music performances called Classical Incarnations. Something of a classical variety show, with a different musical act taking the stage every 5-10 minutes, this series has gained a reputation for musical excellence and charming spontaneity. We have featured living composers, touringclassical performers, and everything from Ottoman classical music to string quartets. These performances are always free and open to all ages.in 2013, we created the Pairs series, a cross-pollination of genres. By pairing classical music with other types of music, we were able to show common threads between the genres, create opportunities for new collaborations between artists, dancers, and musicians, and expose listeners to a different style of music. The Bar Talk (play on Bartók) series was established in 2014, which featured a guest speaker giving an informative talk and a musical performance which supported the topic of the talk. This offered the general public an opportunity to further their education in a casual setting, and gave them a new way to listen to classical music. These events were always free and open to the public. Our events are designed to reach a broad range of people with varying interests. At Classical Open Mics, musicians can perform and then sight-read chamber music for fun. For Valentine s Day in 2016, we gave a screening of Immortal Beloved at the Byrd Theatre, then followed it up a week later with a performance of Beethoven s music which was featured in the film. In 2015, we produced A Taste of Argentina, in which a professional tango band with dancers was followed by a Ginastera string quartet. The next year, we presented A Taste of Tuscany, featuring Italian Renaissance music and Tchaikovksy s Souvenir de Florence. At Maymont, we gave a daytime Around the World performance, featuring Italian music in the Italian gardens, Japanese music in the Japanese gardens, American music by the mansion, and an instrument petting zoo by the animal petting zoo. Around the time of the Richmond marathon in 2014, we presented a music marathon, featuring 26.2 musical acts. #FlashBachFridays are unannounced performances of This April will mark the 4th annual Mozart Festival, a day-long celebration of Mozart s symphonies, arias, and chamber music in various venues. For the first two years, the festival was held in Carytown, Needs Our season marks our 5th anniversary of programming, and we are currently planning a big celebration for this fall. We would like to continue the series described above, as well as developing new and relevant ways of presenting classical music and making it more accessible. The events of the season will continue our important work of breaking down the perceived barrier of elitism surrounding classical music. Many of the things that keep people from experiencing classical music (ticket prices, behavioral expectations, concert format) are not factors at our events, where people feel comfortable coming and going, standing or sitting, applauding when they hear something they like, and interacting with the performers. Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas Metro Richmond 2

3 Our audience consists of largely of VCU students, millennials, classical music fans of all ages and fans of other music genres. During the Mozart Festival each year, we perform in a different area of the city. This year we will be performing in the arts and culture district in the Jackson Ward neighborhood. For this year s festival Classical Revolution RVA will provide a chance for Richmond, VA s classical community to take over the shops, bars, restaurants, and venues for a day-long festival which is free to the public. This year s festival will feature a variety of ways to celebrate the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart while also enjoying the foods, drinks, and settings of this iconic arts district.
