17 Basic Rudiments Examination, December 2014 Explanation of Marks by Chief Examiner Emeritus Maria Case Total Mark for this Paper: 71% 1. Note Naming and Writing: 6/10 a. In part (a), one mark has been deducted in the final measure because the candidate has placed the flat sign after the note. b. In part (b), three marks have been deducted for incorrectly named notes in the bass clef. In the 2nd and 4th measures, it would appear that the candidate has confused the treble and bass clefs. In the 3rd measure, the candidate has neglected to apply the key signature, which makes this an E-flat, rather than an E. 2. Diatonic semitones, chromatic semitones and whole tones: 8/10 a. The first answer is incorrect; two marks have been deducted because this is a whole tone because of the F sharp in the key signature. 3. Intervals: 8/10 a. In part (a), the 3 rd measure is incorrect the note drawn should be a D-flat. b. In part (b), the 1 st measure is incorrect this is a minor third. 4. Transposition: 2/10 a. Two marks have been awarded here for the correct key name. Unfortunately, the candidate has transposed the melody up two octaves. The instructions required that the candidate rewrite the melody at the same pitch; therefore, the starting note in the treble clef should be middle C-sharp. 5. Scales: 8/10 In this question, one mark is awarded for each correct key signature, and one mark is awarded for each correctly pitched set of notes: a. In part (b), the key signature is incorrect (C minor should have three flats instead of four) so one mark has been deducted. However, the incorrect key signature also affects the pitch of the scale, so one additional mark has been deducted for the set of notes, resulting in a mark of 8/10 for this question. b. In part (d), a red arrow has been used to indicate the placement of the C-sharp it is not ideally placed in the space, although it is certainly recognizable as a C-sharp and no deduction has been made. 6. Tonic, Subdominant and Dominant notes: 9/10 a. In part (a), each of the major keys has been correctly identified. b. In part (b), one mark has been deducted for the first measure the B-flat shown is the dominant note of E-flat major (not the subdominant).

18 7. Rests: 4/10 On this question, one mark is deducted for each incorrect measure. a. Line 1: i. In the 2 nd measure of 4/8, the candidate has most likely mistaken the dotted quarter note for a dotted eighth note. The required rest for this measure is a single eighth rest. ii. In the 2 nd measure of 3/2, a quarter rest is needed following the sixteenth rest in order to complete the 1 st beat. b. Line 2: i. In the 2 nd measure of 3/4, the candidate needs another eighth rest to complete the 3 rd beat. In this example, either two quarter rests or a half rest is acceptable for the first two beats. For beat 3, either a dotted eighth rest or an eighth rest followed by a sixteenth rest is acceptable. c. Line 3: i. In the 1 st measure of 2/2, there should be a sixteenth rest following the dotted eighth note, and then two quarter rests. ii. In the 2 nd measure of 2/2, there should be an eighth rest, followed by a dotted quarter rest or a quarter and an eighth rest. iii. In the 3 rd measure of 2/2, the candidate has left the space blank a half rest is required. 8. Triads: 10/10 Full marks have been awarded here as follows: one mark for each correct key signature and one mark for each correctly pitched set of notes. 9. Terms: 10/10 One mark is awarded for each correct answer, resulting in a mark of 10/10 on this question. 10. Analysis: 6/10 There is one mark awarded for each correct answer, although part marks (.5) are possible for some parts on this question (e.g. for definitions of terms that are not entirely correct but show some understanding of the term). a. In part (a) the key has been incorrectly named as E minor (it is G major), so one mark has been deducted. b. In part (e), the correct answer is eight measures. A mark would also be awarded for the answer sixteen, since this piece contains a repeat sign. c. In part (h), the candidate has circled a whole tone instead of a diatonic semitone. d. In part (i), the candidate has incorrectly identified the interval at letter C as a melodic interval instead of a harmonic interval.
