III Composers' Biographies
Composers' Biographies Anastassiou Sp. Christos Christos Sp. Anastassiou was born in Athens, where he studied and got degrees in harmony, counterpoint, orchestration and fugue. He also studied the art of conducting with Lefteris Halkiadakis. He carried on studying composition with Theodoros Antoniou with whom he got a diploma in composition and orchestra conducting. He has participated in a number of seminars about contemporary concert hall music in Greece and Abroad. His studies in composition, analysis and conducting were concluded in the university of Belgrade with Professors Srdjan Hofman, Zoran Eric and Raiko Maksimovic with whom he got a Masters of Arts in He has been honoured in several competitions, like being a finalist of the "ALEA II" International Competition of Composition of the University of Boston, with his work Anakyklisis, finalist in the final of the "OLYMPIA" International Competition of Composition in Athens, with his work Nomos for string quartet, finalist in the 3rd Festival of contemporary music of Belgrade with his work Variations for solo guitar and finalist of the "Taukay" International Competition of Composition in Italy, with his work Anima Mundi for electronic media. As a composer he has composed for a wide variety of media (more than 60 works), including solo, chamber orchestra, symphonic orchestra, string quartets, works for voice, choral music, music for the theatre and television and works for electronic media. His works have been performed by important ensembles of the international contemporary music scene. Many of his works are commissioned by musical organizations and institutions in Greece and abroad (ALEA III, Taukai Edizioni Musicali, Megaron of Athens, etc). Currently he lives in Athens. He is Professor of Composition and director of studies in various Conservatories in Athens. He has also repeatedly lectured and taught in seminars on the music of the 20th century. Since 1994 he has been a member of the Greek "Composers Union".
Drelas Nikos Nikos Drelas was born in Athens in From 1977 up to 1982 he lived in Thessalonica, Greece studying Mathematics at the local University and Harmony with Yiannis Mantakas at the "Neo Odeio" Conservatorium. He took classes in Counterpoint and Composition from Michalis Travlos at the Nikos Skalkotas School of music in Athens and in 1984 he commenced his studies at the department of Composition of "Hochschule der Künste - Berlin" under Witold Szalonek while he also attended seminars in Conducting from Friedrich Goldmann. His music has been performed in Greece and abroad and he's participated in "Gaudeamus International Music Days" in Amsterdam with his work Strophes for mixed choir. The same work was selected to represent Greece at the "Music Days" of ISCM. He was granted a studendship by the "Moysigetis" society, whereas the Department of Culture of the then West Berlin granted him a scholarship in the form of a commission for a composition. He's also participated in the "Conferenza Musicale Mediteranea Palermo" with his work Thetia for 4 voices, guitar, percussion and piano. His compositions hold elements of traditional music due to his experiential relationship with it. Pitch material, melodic fragments, rhythms and gestures in his compositions can reveal this relationship, although not in an apparent way. He lives and works as a teacher and a composer in Athens since Hollington Barnaby Barnaby Hollington was born in Norwich, Great Britain, in He grew up mainly in Australia and France, but returned to Britain in 1993, and now lives in London. He studied music at New College, Oxford and composition with Timothy Salter at the Royal College of Music. He then worked briefly as a violinist, before training as a teacher. After initially giving up composition altogether to concentrate on his teaching work, Barnaby then returned to composition, this time adopting a radically different
approach. The new approach proved successful. Since 2004, his music has begun to gain recognition internationally, with several awards, including 1st prize and a special prize in the International Composition Prize Luxembourg (2006) for Mechanical Avunculogratulation, 2nd prize in the First Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Composition Competition (Japan, 2006) for Con Brio, 3rd prize in the Chamber Category of the First Alexander Moyzes International Competition for Composers (Slovakia, 2006) for Magnificent Octopus, 2nd prize in the Zeitklang International Composition Competition (Austria, 2005) for Jeux de Miroirs and 2nd prize (shared) in the First Uuno Klami International Composition Competition (Finland, 2004) for A Certain Chinese Encyclopaedia. In Japan, after the success of Con Brio, Barnaby was commissioned to write a further work for the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra Inventions (2007). In the UK, Barnaby was selected for the Sound and Music Shortlist (formerly Society for Promotion of New Music (also known as SPNM)), in 1999 and He was also a finalist in the University of Aberdeen Music Prize in 2007 with Bagatelle for String Quartet, and has been shortlisted for other awards. Sahar G. Christopher Born August 7, 1966, Jersey City, New Jersey, U.S. Christopher Sahar s love of music began when he took his first piano lessons at 7. Although he composed on his own since a child, it was not until his late 30 s he began serious study of music composition, due to a fortuitous meeting between one of Mr. Sahar s good friends, a choir director, and an opera composer, Kristin Hevner, at the department store counter where his friend was earning extra income. Upon the choir director s recommendation, Mr. Sahar commenced composition studies with Ms. Hevner. Later, Mr. Sahar continued his composition studies with Conrad Cummings at Juilliard s Evening Division. Mr. Sahar received and completed his first commission for a New York City performance in April 2008, when his solo organ work Volcano was performed. In 2011, Mr. Sahar s one-act opera Crossing the Straits was performed in New York City by the Metropolis Opera Project, a young opera company committed to promoting and performing new musical dramas by Broadway and classical composers. Mr. Sahar resides in Astoria, NY, home to one of the largest Greek communities in the U.S. He has studied abroad in Sweden and served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Belize, Central America.

His work has been read by Chicago's Gaudete Brass and Eighth Blackbird flautist Timothy Munro. He considers intimacy in music an important facet. Interwoven in his music is his interest in archeology, science, mathematics, philosophy, mortality, natural observation, spirituality, and ancient musical systems. His most recent performance in December of 2011 was of his work, Silence (for mezzo-soprano, horn, oboe, and violoncello). The work explored an individuals grappling with mortality through the various developmental stages of life. The work has been described as being hauntingly beautiful and somber.
IV General Information
General Information It is said that contemporary concert hall music is sometimes difficult to approach and remains inaccessible in some ways, not only limited to pricing and the commercial sense. Editions Musica Ferrum addresses those issues by funding interesting composers and publishing fascinating and accessible works; works that are beautiful, handsome scores that are worth owning, (with approachable prices) and materials that are readily available online or in music stores. Founded in Greece by award winning composer and performer Nikolas Sideris, EMF has a deep understanding of the needs and rights of the composer as well as the demands of performers in terms of score quality and clarity. Drawing on decades of experience in score development and preparation, all the elements of production, from physical elements such as paper selection and binding to visual elements such as layout and spacing, have been taken into account to be sure that every score that reaches our customers is of the highest order. Previews of each score are available on our website, and where available excerpts of recordings are also available, along with videos of the whole scores of selected works. Editions Musica Ferrum hopes to reach out to every performer, teacher, student, conductor, producer, composer and other music lover to help them to discover this treasury of new concert hall works.we are open to any questions, comments, or feedback you may have, and we strive to be always available to our customers and interested parties. 20 Kranias Str. - Gerakas Greece
