Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Listen! A Guide to the ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Young People s Concerts Put your hand over your heart. Be still and quiet. What do you feel? Rhythm: the Heart Music of Your heartbeat is always there. Most of the time, you are not aware that your heart is beating. While it beats on and on, you go about your daily routine. Think about your normal day. Most of us do certain things every single day, often at the same time every day. But every day is not the same you have good days and bad days, happy days and sad days. Sometimes, something really exciting or unusual happens. Meanwhile, unnoticed, your heart beats on. Alexander Mickelthwate, conductor Mozart: Symphony 40, 1st movement Rossini-Respighi: Waltz from The Fantastic Toyshop Dvořák: Slavonic Dance, Opus 46, No. 1 Brubeck: Unsquare Dance Orff: Dance from Carmina Burana Stravinsky: Infernal Dance of King Katschei from Firebird Suite Moncayo: Huapango

The same is true of music. While the rhythm holds our attention, the beat just keeps on ticking. The beat, like your heart-beat, is the pulse the very life of music. Music happens in time the way your life happens in time. The steady beat sets the pace and divides time into little bits. Meanwhile, the rhythm may have a dull day or an exciting day, just like you, but the beat goes on. In music, beats are grouped together in 2 s or 3 s. This grouping of beats is called meter. When each section (measure) of a line of music contains 2 beats, we say the music is in duple meter. When there are three beats per measure, we call that triple meter. Duple and triple (and quadruple 4 beat) meters are called simple meters. The first thing you do when you read a page of music is to check the time signature. The time signature looks like a fraction. The top number tells you how many beats are in the Percussion Piano French Horns Tr Harp Clarinets Second Violins Flutes First Violins 2

measures. That helps you figure out the meter. For instance, a 2/4 time signature tells you that there are two beats in each measure. That s duple meter, of course. The beat is a steady pulse. We say that beats are even. Each beat lasts the same amount of time as the beat before and after it. On the other hand, the rhythm is usually uneven. That means that rhythm is a combination of long and short musical tones. Sometimes the notes of the rhythm are on the beat. Sometimes they occur off the beat. Usually these long and short tones are combined into patterns. At the ASO Young People s Concert, you ll hear music with many different meters and rhythms. Some will be simple, but some will be very complicated. You won t believe how composers love to experiment with time in music! Before the concert, watch the rhythm videotape, read your booklet and do the activities for each piece of music. Before long, you ll be a meter and rhythm expert! 5 Symphony #40, 1st movement Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart We use the word symphony many different ways. You are going to the symphony soon. You will hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra play Mozart s Symphony #40 in Symphony Hall. What does that mean? A symphony is a piece of music written for a full orchestra. It has three or four sections or movements. A symphony orchestra is a full orchestra. It has string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. It has nearly 100 musicians. Sometimes we just call the orchestra the symphony. Symphony Hall is the place on Peachtree Street in Atlanta where the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra plays music. Here is another symphony word: Symphonic: 1. Music that is pleasant to listen to; 2. Any music played by a full orchestra You will hear Mozart s 40th Symphony when you go to Symphony Hall. You ll also hear other symphonic music. About The Music Mozart said that the musicians should play this music molto allegro a musical term meaning very lively and brisk. It refers to the tempo the speed or pace of the beat. You might think that lively and brisk music will be very loud. This music surprises you. It begins softly. Then it surprises you again with a very loud burst of sound. 4

Activity #1: Listen to the first movement of Symphony #40. Do you hear the rhythm pattern in this music? A pattern is created when a rhythm is repeated. You hear this rhythm over and over: If you do not read music yet, speak these sentences to get an idea of the rhythm: Is it he? Is it he? Is it Mozart? This is the rhythm of the main theme of this movement. In the middle section, you hear the first three notes of the rhythm played over and over. Do you hear that the first section is repeated immediately? You also hear the music of the first section again at the end. Activity #2: Do you know the meter of this piece? Try walking, running or marching to the beat. If it feels comfortable to step Left-Right-Left- Right, then it is probably in duple meter (two feet = two beats). If it feels right to sway or think 1-2-3, 1-2-3, then the music might be in triple meter. The first beat of each measure is accented (made heavier or louder) to help you hear the groups of beats. Activity #3: Conductors use a different conducting motion for each meter. The pattern for duple meter looks like this: Lift your hand to chest height 2 and trace this pattern in the air. It s almost like drawing a fishhook in the air over and over. 1 Play the recording of Mozart s Symphony #40. Conduct a few minutes of the music, using the duple meter pattern shown. Is your arm tired? Imagine conducting a two-hour concert. You can see why conductors have strong arms! About the COMPOSER Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart had a very unusual childhood. He had an amazing musical talent. By the time Wolfgang was six years old his father was taking his son all over Europe to show off that talent and make money from it. Wolfgang wasn t only a great boy musician. He could also compose music. Mozart wrote his first piece at five years old. He wrote his first two symphonies at ages eight and nine. He and Nannerl, his very talented sister, were called miracle children all over Europe. Wolfgang lived a very short life. He died when he was only thirty-six years old. He wrote over 600 compositions in that short lifetime.

Waltz from The Fantastic Toyshop Rossini-Respighi Have you ever imagined that toys can come to life? That s exactly what happens in this tale about a strange toyshop where dolls come to life and dance all kinds of dances. The story is used in a famous ballet. One of the dances is a beautiful waltz. About the Ballet The story of The Fantastic Toyshop is pure imagination. It takes place in a toyshop in Italy. Rich Russian and American tourists visit the shop to see the mechanical dolls. The shopkeeper shows the tourists how each pair of dolls performs their own special dance. The tourists love the two dolls that dance the can-can. The Russians buy the girl doll. The Americans buy the boy cancan doll. They promise to come back the next day to pick them up. All the dolls are sad, because the can-can dolls are in love with each other and don t want to be apart. The next day, when the tourists come back, no one can find the can-can dolls. The tourists become very angry. The dolls run them out of the shop. When they are gone, everyone dances, including the can-can dolls who were hiding. About The Music The waltz, a dance in 3/4 time, was a very popular dance in the late 1800s. It is a very old dance and a very old form of music. The first waltz tune we know about is from Germany in You probably think of the waltz as a stuffy, old-fashioned dance. During its time, the waltz was considered a wicked dance, because men and women had to dance close to each other. Today, it s still an important dance in ballroom dancing contests. 6

Activity #1 Do you feel the sway in this 3/4 music? You can t help wanting to move to waltzes. They were made for dancing, and we just have to dance! Give the waltz a try yourself. You ve seen people dancing the waltz on the video. Now, study the chart, invite a partner to join you, and try it yourself. It s very easy and lots of fun! Waltz Step Activity #2 Now try conducting in 3/4 time (triple meter). Follow the diagram to conduct a few minutes of the waltz from The Fantastic Toyshop. Conduct with small motions. Listen carefully! Sometimes the music slows down. L L R L L R 3 5 L R R BEGIN LEADER L R 6 R 4 BEGIN FOLLOWER 1 2 About the COMPOSER The composer Rossini wrote the melody of this waltz when he was an old man. The melody was probably never published. Rossini was the famous composer of the opera William Tell. You may know the overture to that opera as the theme for the Lone Ranger television series. Rossini Nearly sixty years after Rossini died, his melodies were used in a new ballet, The Fantastic Toyshop. The head of the Russian Ballet asked the composer Respighi to take Rossini s tunes, change them around and rewrite them for orchestra. The result became one of Respighi s most popular works. The ballet was a great success. 7

Slavonic Dance No. 1 in C major, Op. 46 Antonín Dvořák Can you name THE American folk dance? Most people would agree that one of the most well known American folk dances is the square dance. You know swing your partner and do-si-do! The square dance is called a folk dance, because, like folk dances from all countries, it is done in groups and is very lively. Common people in every part of the world invented folk dances. About The The Slavonic Dances are two sets of eight short pieces Music each. Slavonic Dance No. 1 is composed in the style of a furiant, a Czech folk dance that changes back and forth between duple and triple meters. It contains a series of rhythm patterns. A pattern is created when you repeat something. About the Antonín Dvořák loved his country. Most COMPOSER of his music was inspired by the folk music and folk stories of his native Bohemia. Bohemia is now part of the Czech Republic. When he was 33 years old, Antonín won a prize to help young, poor and talented musicians. Later, he won the prize two more times. One of the judges who awarded him the prize was the famous composer Johannes Brahms. Brahms introduced Antonín to his publisher, who asked Dvořák to write a set of dances like Brahms Hungarian Dances. The Slavonic Dances were so popular they made Antonín famous all over Europe. Activity #1: Follow the listening guide below to listen to the whole piece of music. A B A C D C A B A Triple Duple Triple Duple Duple Duple Triple Duple Triple 8

Activity #2: In the visual arts (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.), rhythm is created the same way it is in music. You repeat something. In other words, you create a pattern. Visual rhythm makes your eyes move around the painting. In music, you want to move your body when you feel the rhythm. In this artwork, what is repeated to create a feeling of rhythm? Activity #3: The time signature in this piece is 3/4 throughout. It feels like the meter changes from triple to duple and back again, because the accents (the heavy or loud beats) change constantly. Try this exercise: Tom Francis Brevard Twilight 2000 Oil/Acrylic on Canvas Count 1-2-3, 1-2-3, etc. Tap your foot to the beat. Once the counting is steady, begin clapping on beats 1, 3 and then 2. These are the accented beats. Do this over and over. Though you are counting in three (triple meter), you are accenting three beats over two measures. Grouping the accents over two measures creates a feeling of a slower triple meter. That is what happens in the first section of this Slavonic Dance. The accent pattern looks like this: The rhythm pattern looks like this: A In the next rhythm pattern, the first beat in each 3/4 measure is accented. The melody is grouped in two-measure sets, so that you feel like you are hearing a slow duple meter. (The first measure 1 is beat #1 of the meter. The second measure 1 is beat #2 of the meter.) B Now count the same way (1-2-3), but clap only on beat #1. The rhythm looks like this: Clap the first pattern four times, then switch to the second pattern. Play it four times, then continue to change back and forth between patterns. Keep the beat steady. There are four different rhythm patterns in this music. Activity #4: Can you invent some dance steps or motions to go with the music? You need four different patterns of steps one for each section. You need three different patterns in duple meter and one in triple meter. Each time a section repeats, do the same steps or motions. Start with something easy. On the first section, (A) just sway left and right. Swing your arms left as you sway left, etc. On the B section walk around in a circle in big, long steps (two feet = two beats). Now you re on your own. Any movement is fine as long as it matches the meter. 9

Unsquare Dance Dave Brubeck This piece of music is great fun! It has a completely different type of meter. There are seven beats in each measure. See if you can learn the meter and the rhythm. You can even play along! About The Music Unsquare Dance is just that not square. It is named unsquare because the meter can t be squared. Simple meter music has 2, 3 or 4 beats per measure. Unsquare Dance has seven beats (7/4 time signature). It s a real challenge to foot-tappers and hand-clappers! The piece was recorded first by a small jazz group with piano, double bass and percussion. It begins with just the bass and some hand-clapping. It combines duple and triple meter: two sets of two beats followed by one set of three beats (2+2+3=7). Activity #1: To truly enjoy Unsquare Dance, you must learn to clap the rhythm. Try this: Count Once the beat is steady, try clapping on 2,4, 6 and 7. Look at this chart. Clap on the underlined beats. If that is too hard, try counting 1-2, 1-2, Clap on 2 s and 3 s. (Remember: 2+2+3=7) 10

Activity #2: Now, for fun, make up a clapping game with a partner. Face each other. Clap your own hands together on 1,3 and 5 (or on the 1 s using the second method of counting). Clap hands with your neighbor on 2,4,6 and 7. Can you make up some more unsquare meters? Try 5 make up a partner clapping routine with 5 beats. Activity #3: When the piano and drum enter the music, things get much more interesting. Can you scat sing the piano melody? Scat singing is a jazz technique of singing so that you sound like an instrument. Use syllables such as doodle-doo-dee-oo or make up your own. You are the orchestrator when you scat sing. You decide what instrument sounds you ll make. About the COMPOSER Dave Brubeck is one of America s great jazz musicians. He was playing as a professional jazz pianist when he was only thirteen years old. His mother taught him piano. Later, as a young man, he began studying to be a veterinarian. He grew up on a ranch in California and loved the animals. He then decided he wanted to be a composer. He studied with some of the greatest American classical music composers of the 20th century. He is known for experimenting with meter. Some of his music has two meters at the same time. Brubeck s three sons, Danny (a drummer), Darius (a pianist) and Chris (a bass guitarist) often perform with him. He has led many jazz groups. His most famous group was called the Dave Brubeck Quartet (four players). They recorded a Brubeck composition called Take Five that made them famous. The piece is called Take Five because it is in quintuple meter. That means it has five beats in each measure. This was the first time that jazz music experimented with meter. Dave Brubeck is one of the most recognized names in modern jazz. He appeared on the cover of Time magazine in He played at the White House in He received the National Medal of the Arts from President Clinton a few years ago. 11

Dance (Tanz) from Carmina Burana Carl Orff Now that you know how septuple meter (7/4 time) works, you are ready to hear a wonderful new piece of music. This music uses groups of 2 and 3 beats just like Unsquare Dance. Instead of 1-2, 1-2, 1-2-3, you might hear a group of four beats, followed by 3, followed by 2, then four two times and on and on. To make things even more interesting, the beat doesn t feel steady. Even though its meter is complicated, you ll find that this dance is fun to listen to. Be careful if you try to dance to it, though. It s tricky! Activity: Tanz is written in three parts. The first part is loud. The second part is softer and a little slower, with a flute solo. You will know when the third part begins. It is loud again and sounds just like the first part. Follow the listening guide for Tanz. Can you tell when a new section begins? Can you tell when the beat note is shorter? Can you clap the rhythms? How many times do you hear the purple rhythm pattern? How many times do you hear the green rhythm pattern? How many times do you hear the yellow 2 rhythm pattern?

About The Music The Dance (Tanz, in German) from Carl Orff s Carmina Burana is a wild and crazy dance. You can just imagine people flinging themselves around with uncontrolled motions. In fact, this dance is set in a section of Carmina Burana called On the Lawn. That would be a good place to do this dance! A chorus and soloists sing all the other parts (movements) of Carmina. This is the only movement just for orchestra. Tanz has no time signature. Written above the conductor s score (the written music), there is simply a number (2,3,4,6,12) and the beat note. The beat note is the type of note that gets one beat. It is sometimes a quarter note and sometimes an eighth note. Eighth notes last half as long as quarter notes (1/4 divided by 2 = 1/8). Because the beat note keeps changing, the pulse (beat) is not always the same. About the COMPOSER Carl Orff showed an interest in music at an early age. He loved to write puppet plays with music. He even had a composition published when he was just 16 years old. He wasn t well known for his compositions until he wrote Carmina Burana. Before then, he was best known in his native Germany as a music teacher. You might have heard of him and don t realize it. Does your music teacher use Orff Instruments? They are xylophones and glockenspiels (bells) of all sizes. Many music teachers in American schools use the Orff method of teaching music. Orff believed that students should learn to play instruments, learn to move to music and act out the music. He believed all young people are musical. Ask your teacher if she uses the Orff music teaching method. You might be an Orff musician. 13

Infernal Dance of King Katschei from Firebird Suite Igor Stravinsky Do you know any fairy tales or myths? People in every part of the world have their own fairy tales and myths. Sometimes they are stories about creatures with magic powers. The story behind this music is a Russian fairy tale. About the Ballet: Firebird Suite is the story of a Russian Czar s son, Prince Ivan. One night, Ivan sees a magical golden bird taking golden apples from a tree. He tries to catch the bird. The bird gives him one of his golden feathers for Ivan to set him free. The feather is supposed to have the power to protect Ivan and to bring the firebird to his rescue. Later, Ivan is in the courtyard of an enchanted castle. He sees a beautiful princess and twelve maidens. He falls in love with the princess. He wants her to go away with him. The princess tells Ivan that she and her friends are captives of the wicked magician King Katschei. If anyone tries to rescue them, they will be turned into stone. Ivan goes into the castle to do battle with Katschei. The magician is surrounded by his mean and threatening servants. Ivan waves the magic feather. The firebird returns. The bird makes Katschei s servants do a mad dance that leaves them too tired to hurt Ivan. Ivan and the princess find the magic egg that is the source of Katschei s powers. He smashes the egg and takes the princess away. Of course, they live happily ever after. About The Music The Infernal Dance of Katschei s servants is the music you will hear from Firebird Suite. This music changes meters as Tanz did. Most of the music is in triple meter. Sometimes it changes to duple meter. The most important part of this music is the rhythm. Stravinsky uses a type of rhythm called syncopation. In non-syncopated music, the heaviest beat (accent) is on the first beat of each measure. In a syncopated rhythm, notes are accented in unusual places. Sometimes there is no note on the beat. Instead, notes are played between the beats. You ll hear syncopation in nearly every measure of The Infernal Dance of King Katschei. 14

Activity #1: Try playing a syncopated rhythm. Count aloud: , , etc. Try to clap between the beats. It helps if you divide the beat in half. Say, 1 and 2 and 3 and 1 and 2 and 3 and, etc. Make the beats and half-beats even. Now, clap when you say and. This is exactly what the brass instruments play in the beginning melody of Infernal Dance. Activity #2: Follow this listening guide as you listen to the music of the Infernal Dance. Point to the instrument family playing the melody in each section of the music. Listen for the glissando of the harp. This sound makes us think of the magic bird swooping down on the scene. The harpist sweeps her hand across the strings to make this spooky sound. Activity #3: Try drawing or painting your own version of the Infernal Dance scene. Should you use curving lines or zig-zag lines? Bright colors or pale colors? How will you make your decision? About the COMPOSER Igor Stravinsky was born in Russia. His father was an opera singer. Igor dreamed of becoming a composer, but his family wanted him to become a lawyer. At law school, he met the son of Rimsky-Korsakov, a famous Russian composer. After graduation from law school, Igor studied composition with his friend s father. The head of the Russian Ballet, Serge Diaghilev, liked Igor s music. He hired Igor to write the music for a new ballet. The ballet was to be based on the story of a magic bird. The Firebird Suite made Stravinsky very famous. (Diaghilev was the person who also hired Respighi to write the music for The Fantastic Toyshop.) 15

Huapango José Pablo Moncayo Do you like to have a good time? If you do, you ll love this music. Huapango is full of the joy and fun of a happy party. The musicians have a great time, shouting and throwing their hats into the air. Chihuahua Monterey MEXICO Guadalajara Mexico City Acapulco UNITED STATES Veracruz About the Dance The huapango (hwah-pahn -goh) is a dance from the area around Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico. The word huapango means "dancing on the platform." Of course, the dance is usually done on a stage or platform. The quick and complicated movements include stomping inspired by the movement of horses. The dancers wear chamois leather outfits. About the COMPOSER José Pablo Moncayo was born in Guadalajara, Mexico, in He was a pianist, teacher and conductor. He wrote one of the classics of Mexican symphonic music, Huapango. The piece was first played by the Mexican National Orchestra in Mexico City. The conductor was Carlos Chávez, Moncayo s teacher and friend. Later, Moncayo himself became conductor of the National Orchestra. Moncayo was part of a group of composers who called themselves the Group of Four. Their mission was to bring the spirit of Mexican folk and popular music into Mexican symphonic music. Like Dvořák, Moncayo loved the music of his native country and wanted everyone in the world to hear it. 16

Activity #1: Moncayo s Huapango has a time signature of 6/8. There are 6 eighth-note beats in each measure. 6/8 time is a compound meter. A compound meter is a simple meter multiplied by three. You multiply 2 by 3 to get 6 beats. Here s how that works: Count to 6 over and over. Clap on 1 and 4. This sounds like the measure is divided into two equal parts, so the meter sounds duple. It is called compound duple meter. (6 divided by 3 = 2) If you accent (clap) on 1, 3 and 5, it sounds like triple meter: (6 divided by 3 = 2) In Huapango, Moncayo changes constantly from the first pattern to the second pattern from 2 s to 3 s and back. The time signature remains 6/8. Activity #2: Follow the musical listening guide on the next page to keep track of all the things happening in Huapango. Which instruments start the music (strings, woodwinds, brass or percussion)? Which instruments usually play the melody? About The Music The rhythm pattern of Huapango is syncopated and moves between groups of two beats and three beats. Guitars, trumpets, violins, lots of percussion instruments and sometimes a harp are used in the huapango. 17

Meet the Conductor Alexander Mickelthwate is the conductor for this year s concert. The conductor is the person who stands in front of the orchestra and leads them in playing the music. The conductor s instrument is the entire orchestra! The musicians of the orchestra follow the conductor s baton and arm movements in order to play together. The conductor reads from the score. The score has all the instrumental parts so the conductor can see what each instrument should be playing at any moment. The conductor is responsible for starting and stopping the orchestra and setting the speed (tempo) of the music. Through the use of a baton and body language, he or she keeps the beat and shows the players how the music should be expressed. Below, Maestro Mickelthwate answers some of the questions that students have sent to him. What is it like to be a conductor? (Sengens Amy-Cupp, Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School) It s great! It s a mix between being Bobby Cox (baseball coach of the Braves) and Chipper Jones only in music. I coach the orchestra and at the same time play and conduct this exciting music. Do you have to play all the instruments to [conduct]? (Brandon Hall, Peachtree City Elementary) I actually studied piano, cello, voice and composition. And for 6 months I played the trombone, clarinet and saxophone. It is helpful to know about the instruments but orchestra musicians are, of course, absolute pros. Is it hard to keep your hands moving [throughout] the whole concert? (Grace Southworth, Pace Academy) I actually love it. It s like the fish in water. He has to swim. I love using my hands. It feels good. A Note to Parents: We are delighted that your child will have an opportunity to visit Symphony Hall to hear the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. This student guide is part of the extensive preparation materials provided for educators to use in preparing young people for the concert. The teacher materials are available for your perusal on the Internet at The theme of the ASO Young People s Concert is rhythm. Students will explore the element of rhythm in music how it is created and how it conveys meaning. In subsequent years, students will learn about the other elements of music. We hope you will encourage your school leaders to take advantage of these future concerts. 18 The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra provides other opportunities for you to share the joy of music with your child. The Sunday afternoon Family Concert series is designed to be an entertaining learning experience for the whole family. Also on Sunday afternoons, you and your children may enjoy concerts performed by the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra. This talented group of student musicians ranging in age from 13 to 18 performs three subscription concerts a year. We hope you ll take advantage of these and other concerts to instill in your child a love of orchestral music a lifelong gift that your child will treasure.
