4 THE CONDUCTORS Junior Honors String Orchestra Conductor MS. MICHELLE ROBERTS is a lifelong Montgomery County resident and graduate of MCPS. She received a bachelor s degree in music education (instrumental music) and a bachelor s degree in music performance (bass trombone) from the University of Maryland, graduating Magna Cum Laude. Since graduating, she has been teaching at Montgomery Blair High School for the past eleven years. She subsequently earned joint certification from Berkleemusic and Propellerhead Software as a Specialist in Music Creation Using Reason software. In 2013 Ms. Roberts received the Maryland Music Educators Association Outstanding Music Teacher Award for Instrumental Music. She directed the Montgomery County Public Schools Junior Honors Jazz Band in 2015 and With Ms. Roberts as its Tri-M Music Honor Society advisor, MBHS received the third place award for Chapter of the Year in She has served as a mentor teacher for college interns, and she is also a frequent adjudicator. A member of NAfME and MMEA, she serves on the MMEA Young Composers Project committee, has participated on Music Technology panels at MMEA conferences, and presented at the MCPS New Educator Orientation. Ms. Roberts has been a member of the Market Street Big Band since Ms. Roberts was awarded a grant from the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts that she used to commission a work by renowned British composer Paul Lewis. After a week in residency, the MBHS advanced orchestra performed the world premiere of Salute the Silents! at the historic AFI Theatre in Silver Spring. Ms. Roberts is excited to share one of Paul Lewis s most personal compositions Rosa Mundi with the Jr. Honors Orchestra this year. Junior Honors Band Conductors MS. TERRY ALVEY, is the Instrumental Music Director at Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda, Maryland. A graduate of St. Mary s College of Maryland, Ms. Alvey received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Trumpet Performance and continued her graduate studies at the University of Maryland and Trinity College. She is an active music educator, conductor, adjudicator, clinician, and performer. During her teaching career with Montgomery County Public Schools, she also taught at Tilden, North Bethesda and Hoover Middle Schools. Under her leadership, these school bands and orchestras have consistently received superior ratings at both the District and State Band and Orchestra Festivals. Also under Ms. Alvey s direction, the Whitman Jazz Ensemble has placed first in both the prestigious Chantilly Jazz Festival and the High School Jazz Competition at the Mid-Atlantic Jazz Festival. Ms. Alvey is currently conductor of the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra Wind Ensemble, and has served as conductor for the Maryland All-State Junior Band, Montgomery County Sixth Grade and Junior Honors Bands, as well as the Senior Honors String Orchestra. She has been a guest conductor throughout the area, including Charles, St. Mary s and Prince Georges Counties, and for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. In addition to serving as an adjudicator for Band, Orchestra and Solo and Ensemble Festivals throughout Maryland, Ms. Alvey has been on the faculties of the Levine School of Music, University of Maryland Summer Youth Band Camp, DC Youth Orchestras, Montgomery County Youth Orchestras and the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra programs. Ms. Alvey has played trumpet with the M Street Brass Quintet a Washington DC-based performing ensemble, for the last 26 years. Before joining M St, Ms. Alvey was a freelance musician and a member of the Monumental Brass Quintet, which performed at many venues on the East Coast, including the Kennedy Center, Lisner Auditorium, the Joseph Meyerhoff Hall and the White House. In addition to her current role at Whitman, Ms. Alvey maintains a private trumpet studio. MR. ROB DAHLIN is a graduate of Montgomery County Public Schools, graduating from Sherwood High School in 1987, then earning a Bachelor s degree in Music Education from James Madison University in After Graduating from James Madison, Mr. Dahlin came back to teach for Montgomery County Public Schools in In his tenure with MCPS, Mr. Dahlin has taught at Westland Middle School, Ridgeview Middle School, Herbert Hoover Middle School, and is currently the instrumental music teacher at the new Hallie Wells Middle School, While at these schools, he taught award winning string orchestras, concert bands, and a jazz band. Mr. Dahlin s students often earn superior
5 ratings at local, state, and regional music festivals. His students consistently earn first place and best overall ensemble awards for each of his performing groups at Music in the Parks Festivals. Mr. Dahlin has been the conductor of the Montgomery County Jr. Honors Band three other times, in 2007, 2014, and During the past two years, nearly 1/3 of the MCPS Junior Honors Band have known Mr. Dahlin as their instrumental music teacher at Hoover Middle School. Mr. Dahlin is also a conductor for Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. While with PVYO Mr. Dahlin has conducted the Symphony Orchestra, and in 2014 Mr. Dahlin conducted the first PVYO Concert Band. Senior All-County String Orchestra Conductor DR. PETER PERRY is a lifelong Maryland resident, and has traveled the world teaching and performing music. He is currently in his twenty-first consecutive year as Instrumental Music Director at Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, Maryland. Here he conducts the: Chamber Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, Pit Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Concert Band, and Marching Band. These ensembles consistently receive critical acclaim on local, state, and national levels. Dr. Perry created and teaches a course in Music Technology. In 2002, in partnership with the National Philharmonic, he put together the first Music Technology Lab at Richard Montgomery High School, and also helped author the Montgomery County Public Schools curriculum for High School Music Technology. Dr. Perry holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Music Education from Shenandoah Conservatory, as well as a Master s Degree in Music Education-Instrumental Conducting Concentration, and a Bachelor of Science Degree-Instrumental Music Education, both from the University of Maryland. While at the University of Maryland, Dr. Perry was awarded the prestigious Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship in Music. In 2006, Dr. Perry received a Japan Fulbright fellowship and participated in the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program. The program was designed to provide educators with first-hand opportunities to experience Japanese culture and education through school visits, interactions with teachers and students, seminars, and home stays. Dr. Perry was one of four Maryland educators chosen for the November 2006 cycle. He composed an orchestral work highlighting his experiences in Japan that was premiered by the Richard Montgomery High School Orchestra. Dr. Perry is an active guest conductor, clinician, adjudicator, lecturer, author, composer, and performer. He is past vice president of the Maryland state unit of the International Association for Jazz Education and was the director of the Montgomery County Public Schools Senior Honors Jazz Ensemble for seven years. He is a contributing reviewer for the Music Educators National Conference Music Educators Journal. Dr. Perry has presented sessions at the Maryland Music Educators Conference, Music Teacher s National Association Conference, and the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) Eastern Division Conference. He has also served as trumpet professor at Montgomery College in Rockville, Maryland. Dr. Perry is a member of the National Association for Music Education, TI: ME (Technology Institute for Music Education), American String Teachers Association, International Trumpet Guild, Kappa Kappa Psi-National Honorary Band Fraternity, Alpha Chi and Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Societies, and the Maryland Music Educators Association. He lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland with his wife, Deborah and son, Peter. Senior Honors Band Preparation Conductors MR. SCOTT HERMAN has been the Band and Orchestra Director at Cabin John Middle School in Potomac, Maryland for 28 years. Under his leadership, the ensembles have been featured at regional and state conferences, and have consistently attained superior ratings at district, state and national adjudications. In 2012, the Cabin John attained Maryland s distinguished Exemplary Music Program award. In 2009, Mr. Herman was named Maryland s Outstanding Music Teacher of the Year. The American String Teachers Association recognized his work with strings and presented him with the Outstanding Service to Strings award. Mr. Herman has spent the last four seasons serving as a conductor, coach, and an artistic advisor for the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestras (PVYO). Prior to that Mr. Herman spent 14 seasons leading the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras. Mr. Herman has guest conducted over 35 district honors groups including the Maryland All- State Orchestra. He is frequently invited to
6 THE CONDUCTORS adjudicate district assessments and regional competitions, along with presenting master classes and clinics for local educators and their students. Mr. Herman s private trumpet and string bass studio are well represented in the all-county, all-state, and youth orchestra programs. Mr. Herman is a member of the Capital Wind Symphony in McLean, Va. MR. KEVIN ROUSE is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where he received a degree in music education. As a bass trombonist, he studied under Matthew Guilford, the bass trombonist for the National Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Rouse is currently the instrumental music director at Thomas S. Wootton High School. Previously, he was the director at Northwest High School from His bands and orchestras have received consistent excellent and superior ratings at county and state festival. Mr. Rouse s marching bands, symphonic bands and orchestras have also received multiple awards in Florida, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. He also enjoys composing and arranging for his own marching band and other schools in the area. Mr. Rouse is honored to work with the talented students in the MCPS Senior Honors Band. Senior Honors Band Guest Conductor MR. GEORGE ETHERIDGE has enjoyed a varied and successful career as performer, conductor and educator in the Metropolitan Washington, DC area for over 40 years. Educated at the University of Michigan and The Paris Conservatory, Mr. Etheridge first came to the DC area as Instructor of at the University of Maryland. He has performed as soloist at The Kennedy Center, Constitution Hall, The Smithsonian Hall of Musical Instruments and the Corcoran Gallery of Art. Mr. Etheridge has also served as adjunct professor of at Howard University, Catholic University, Federal City College, George Mason University and the College of William and Mary. In 1977, George Etheridge was appointed conductor of the famed Fort Hunt High School Band in Alexandria, VA a position he held until the schools closing in During Mr. Etheridge s tenure at Fort Hunt, the band was chosen to perform at The International Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. In 1985, Mr. Etheridge was named conductor of Bands at The College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia; a position he held for 6 years and 1991 he returned to the Washington, DC area to form the Capital Wind Symphony. In 1994, the CWS was chosen to perform at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Today, the CWS has developed into an ensemble of 75 musicians, including many of the best players in the Washington DC metro area, Maryland and Virginia. In addition to his position with the Capital Wind Symphony, Mr. Etheridge is founder and clinician for the SCORE educational outreach program, sponsored by the Fairfax Symphony Orchestra.
