4 THE CONDUCTORS Junior Honors String Orchestra Conductors MRS. JENNIFER VAN PETTEN, a graduate of the University of Maryland, has established herself as one of the premier music educators and conductors in the region and is well known for her charisma, enthusiasm, energy, and attention to musical detail. Mrs. Van Petten recently took leave to raise her three young children after 11 years as the instrumental music director at Rosa Parks Middle School. While there, her bands and orchestras consistently earned superior ratings at both the county and state levels. Additionally, the 2012 Rosa Parks Symphonic Band was featured at the Maryland Music Educators Association spring conference. While on leave, Mrs. Van Petten continues to inspire young musicians, serving as a guest conductor and clinician throughout the state of Maryland. Most recently she has served as conductor for the Anne Arundel County Middle School Orchestra. Additionally, in 2013, Mrs. Van Petten served as the conductor of the Tri-County Junior Honors Orchestra in Southern Maryland. Mrs. Van Petten has also served as conductor for the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestra s Chamber Strings and Young Artists Orchestra, and she is currently assisting directors within the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra. The year 2014 marks the fourth year she has served as co-conductor of the MCPS Junior Honors Orchestra. Mrs. Van Petten has garnered many awards in her teaching career, including the Nancy Dworkin Award for Outstanding Service to Youth, in She was also a finalist for the Agnes Meyer Teaching Award. Mrs. Van Petten is an active member of the Maryland Music Educators Association, where she has served as member-at-large, in the Maryland Orchestra Directors Association and as an adjudicator for the district and state honors ensembles. She frequently adjudicates regional band and orchestra festivals in Maryland. She resides with her family in Olney, where she maintains a private studio. MR. DAVID LEVIN earned his bachelor of music education degree with a minor in trumpet from The Catholic University, in Washington, D.C. He also earned a master of music education degree with a minor in conducting there in Mr. Levin has been teaching for 35 years at Montgomery County Public Schools, where his programs have been highly regarded for their excellence. Mr. Levin recently transferred to Rosa Parks Middle School after concluding a 10-year tenure as a member of the music faculty at Winston Churchill High School, a 2005 Grammys Signature School. Churchill has also been recognized by the Cappies for having the best pit orchestra in the Washington D.C. metropolitan region for the past three school years. Before his tenure at Churchill, Mr. Levin opened and established the instrumental music program at James Hubert Blake High School and the Arts and Humanities Signature School in Silver Spring, Maryland. In addition, Mr. Levin has frequently conducted and coached the Montgomery County Senior and Junior Honors Band and Orchestra. Mr. Levin also spends his Monday and some Tuesday evenings serving as educational advisor and sectional coach for the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestras. Prior to that, he served for 21 years with the Maryland Classic Youth Orchestras as conductor of the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Young Artists Orchestra, and MCYO s flagship Philharmonic Orchestra. Mr. Levin maintains a trumpet studio in Rockville, Maryland; performs professionally with the M Street Brass Quintet (comprising five instrumental music teachers); and freelances throughout the metropolitan area. His past performing associations include The Catholic University Orchestra, the Georgetown Symphony, and most recently, the McLean Orchestra. Mr. Levin has also been sought out as guest conductor for honors ensembles throughout Maryland and Virginia. He has adjudicated district band, orchestra, and solo festivals throughout the Washington D.C. metropolitan area.

5 Junior Honors Band Conductor MR. ROB DAHLIN is a product of Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS). Mr. Dahlin graduated from Sherwood High School in He earned a bachelor of music education from James Madison University in After graduating, Mr. Dahlin came back to teach at MCPS. From 1992 to 1997, he taught at Westland Middle School. From 1997 to 2007, he taught at Ridgeview Middle School. While working at Ridgeview Middle School, Mr. Dahlin received the Marion Greenblatt Excellence in Education Award and went on to be named the Montgomery County Teacher of the Year ( ). Since the fall of 2007, Mr. Dahlin has been teaching at Hoover Middle School. During his 22 years with MCPS, his students have earned superior ratings at the county and state levels. His band and orchestra students have annually earned first place honors at the Music in the Parks Festivals in Williamsburg, Virginia. Senior All-County String Orchestra Guest Conductor MRS. BRIGITTE KIRCHHOFF has been working in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) for 11 years. She has spent the past nine working at Quince Orchard High School in Gaithersburg, Maryland, as the director of orchestras. Prior to taking the position at Quince Orchard in 2005, Mrs. Kirchhoff taught at Roberto Clemente Middle School for two years and was the conductor of the Potomac Valley Youth Orchestra Preparatory Orchestra for four years. Mrs. Kirchhoff holds a bachelor of music in music education and a master of education in human development, both from the University of Maryland at College Park. Mrs. Kirchhoff attended the University of Maryland on the Creative and Performing Arts Scholarship. While there, she was president of the University of Maryland s student chapter of the National Association for Music Education. While at Quince Orchard, Mrs. Kirchhoff has helped to build the music program for more than 400 students. Quince Orchard ensembles consistently receive superior ratings at district and state festivals. From 2008 to 2010, she served as the elected faculty representative on Quince Orchard s Leadership Team. From 2010 to 2011, Mrs. Kirchhoff represented Montgomery County music teachers by serving on the Councils of Teaching and Learning. She also spearheaded several committees to support music education efforts in MCPS. In 2008, Mrs. Kirchhoff received the honor of conducting the MCPS Junior All- County Honors Orchestra. She remains an active member of the National Association for Music Education, Maryland Music Educators Association, and the Maryland State Teachers Association. In her free time, Mrs. Kirchhoff enjoys playing ultimate Frisbee, training for half marathons, and trying to keep up with her 2-year-old son, Andrew. Senior Honors Band Preparation Conductor MR. MARK EISENHOWER is a graduate of Col. Zadok Magruder High School and has been the instrumental music teacher there since The Magruder bands and orchestras regularly earn superior ratings at district and state festivals. He earned his bachelor of music education degree from the University of Northern Colorado and taught for three years in Mitchell, Nebraska, before returning to Montgomery County. An active bass trombonist, Mr. Eisenhower has performed with the Capitol Wind Symphony, Trinity Chamber Orchestra, and the Maryland Band Directors Band. Mr. Eisenhower has conducted several Montgomery County Public Schools honors ensembles, serving as the conductor of the junior honors band in 1991 and the senior band in For the past several years, he has prepared the senior honor band for notable guest conductors such as Anthony Maiello, Eliott Del Borgo, Robert Cameron, Harlan Parker, and John Lynch. In 2004, he conducted the Anne Arundel County Mid- Level Honor Band, and, in 2010, he conducted the Calvert County Honors Band. For 14 years he was the manager of the Maryland Senior All State Band; in 2001 Mr. Eisenhower had the honor of conducting the Maryland Junior All State Band.

6 THE CONDUCTORS Senior Honors Band Guest Conductor DR. EMILY THREINEN serves as director of bands and artistic director of winds and brass at the Boyer College of Music and Dance at Temple University. She conducts the acclaimed Wind Symphony, guides the instrumental conducting program, instructs courses on wind repertory, and provides administrative leadership for all aspects of Temple University bands. Prior to her appointment at Temple University, Threinen served as director of bands, assistant professor of music, and instrumental division chair at the Shenandoah Conservatory at Shenandoah University in Winchester, Virginia; director of the Duke University Wind Symphony in Durham, North Carolina; director of the Concordia University Wind Ensemble in Ann Arbor, Michigan; conductor of the Dodworth Saxhorn Band in Ann Arbor, Michigan; and director of bands and instrumental music at Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, receiving the Outstanding Teacher Award. Dr. Threinen consistently works with composers, arrangers, and performing artists of varied disciplines. Residencies and projects with composers are integral to her creative work. Dr. Threinen is an active guest conductor, clinician, conference presenter, and adjudicator. Her recent professional engagements include a residency at Queensland Conservatorium in Brisbane, Australia; a residency with Projeto Guri in Sao Paulo, and Bauru, Brazil; reading sessions and performance with the West Point Concert Band of the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York; a residency at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada; a co-presentation at The Midwest Clinic in Chicago, Illinois; and the design and implementation of the master of music in instrumental conducting: Wind-band emphasis degree and the Wind Conducting and Teaching Workshop at Temple University. She is published in multiple volumes of the GIA Teaching Music through Performance in Band book series, where she has been recognized as one of the strongest scholarly contributors. Dr. Threinen received a doctor of musical arts degree in conducting from the University of Michigan, under Michael Haithcock; a master of music degree in conducting from Northwestern University, under Mallory Thompson; and a bachelor of music dual degree in clarinet performance and K 12 instrumental music education from the University of Minnesota. After finishing her undergraduate studies, while teaching at Harding High School in St. Paul, Minnesota, Dr. Threinen performed as a clarinetist in the Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra and semi-professionally in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Dr. Threinen currently serves on the board of directors of the Conductors Guild and she is an active member of the College Band Directors National Association, World Association for Symphonic Band and Ensembles, National Band Association, National Association for Music Education, Pi Kappa Lambda, and Kappa Kappa Psi as an honorary member.
