We are one. -- THE BLUEGRASS SITUATION Two hundred jury-selected nightly concerts featuring tourready emerging talent and established artists from around the world who are diverse in sound, culture, geography, language, and gender. Showcases are 30-minute sets on full production stages with lighting and sound. 4 INTERNATIONAL FOLK MUSIC AWARDS LOUIS JAY MEYERS MUSIC CAMP WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 14 FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 16 TO SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18 The International Folk Music Awards (IFMAs) are the premier recognition of folk music industry leaders, legends, unsung heroes, and rising talent. Awards presented are: member-voted Best Of for Album, Song, and Artist of the previous year, Lifetime Achievement, Spirit of Folk, inductions into the Folk DJ Hall of Fame, and in a permanent commitment to honor the socially conscious roots of folk music, the People s Voice and Clearwater Awards. The 5th Annual Music Camp (now named after its founder and FAI s late Executive Director Louis Jay Meyers) features master instructors offering the finest in musical instruction and expertise. A camp like no other, where pros study with legends and dedicated hobbyists learn from the best in the field. Past performers and presenters include Kris Kristofferson, Paula Cole, Megan Mullally, Bruce Cockburn, and Eliza Gilkyson. The IFMAs in 2018 will occur at the historic Folly Theater and will be expanded and broadcast live. Additonal tickets required for conference delegates. Open to the public. KANSAS CITY FOLK FESTIVAL SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 18 A family-friendly public festival featuring the best local, regional, national, and international artists. Exhibit Hall A robust tradeshow where entrepreneurial artists and small business owners network, learn, and showcase their businesses. The hub for business-to-business activity with more than 70 exhibitors including artists, labels, agents, managers, instrument companies, digital companies, other conferences, and artistservices companies. Folk Alliance is the most important business conference I attend every year. It offers a significant opportunity to meet and hear new talent. VISION CARE FOR THE MUSIC INDUSTRY Global Summit In 2018, FAI is launching the Global Summit Series for each of the following peer groups: ethnomusicologists, archivists, cultural sector policy planners and funders, festival artistic directors, and national arts service organizations executive directors. Each summit is an in-depth three-hour session hosted by a thought leader in the field and will include a keynote, directed discussion, and time for networking. Limited access. Industry Bootcamps Three add-on bootcamp courses offer expert instruction and practical training for emerging agents, managers, and artist-entrepreneurs. Enrollment limited. Additional fee required. Funding provided by: ARTIST IN RESIDENCE PROGRAM The 2018 Artist in Residence project will explore the connection between music, sound, mathematics, and art. KoreanAmerican artist Henry Nam is partnering with the University of Missouri-Kansas City s Applied Math Department to develop and interpret a percussive instrumental guitar composition, in turn collaborating with the the sound and media arts students of the Kansas City Art Institute. GUEST SPEAKERS MARY CHAPIN CARPENTER Five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Carpenter is beloved by fans and critics alike. Carpenter has recorded 14 albums and sold over 14 million records and in 2016 released the album, The Things We Are Made Of, produced by Dave Cobb. The album features eleven new songs and has received critical acclaim.
