1 SACM CONCERT SERIES FOR 2017 WEDNESDAY 16 AUGUST AT 19H30 The UCT School of Dance presents DANCING IN THE DARK Directed by Jacki Job and Gerard Samuel Members of the public are welcome to attend the weekly lunchtime concerts every Wednesday and Thursday at 13H00 during the academic term. Admission is free, and the concerts fit neatly into 40 minutes. (See the end of this brochure for some daytime concert details.) TUESDAY 15 AUGUST AT 19H30 SONGS OF LOVE AND SORROW A programme of vocal works by Hendrik Hofmeyr The SA College of Music concert series resumes next Tuesday in the Baxter Concert Hall at 7.30pm with a concert dedicated to the art songs of one of SA s best-loved composers, Hendrik Hofmeyr, who celebrates his sixtieth birthday this year. The programme, entitled Songs of Love and Sorrow, represents an overview of his contribution to the art song, for which he has been honoured with a Kanna award by the Kleinkaroo National Arts Festival. The stellar cast of singers, which includes sopranos Arline Jeftha and Janelle Visagie, as well as mezzos Jolene McCleland and Minette du Toit-Pierce, will be accompanied by award-winning pianist, José Dias. This mixed bill explores notions of Black Dance and is purposefully tongue-in-cheek. From Katherine Dunham to reggae, hip hop to mpantsula, the notion of noble savage is critigued, and repositioned. The audience is invited to a free, pre-performance talk with the directors which will be held in the theatre foyer from 19H00. Prices: R50 and R25 for students and seniors. TUESDAY 22 AUGUST AT 19H30 THE SAMRO UCT BIG BAND Directed by Mike Rossi The UCT Big Band plays a variety of big band Jazz styles, featuring compositions and arrangements by SAMRO members. WEDNESDAY 23 AUGUST AT 19H30 THE CAPE TOWN YOUTH CHOIR Directed by Leon Starker CELEBRATING THE CHORAL WORKS OF HENDRIK HOFMEYR

2 The Cape Town Youth Choir is excited and honoured to be presenting an evening of choral music all composed by one of South Africa's best contemporary classical and choral composers, Hendrik Hofmeyr. Pieces such as "Die Spokewals", "A Sexta Autem Hora", "Pie Jesu" and "Gloria", which CTYC performed in Carnegie Hall in April There are a few commissioned pieces such as "Al lê die berge nog so blou" and "Genesis" which are all part of this exciting repertoire. TUESDAY 5 SEPTEMBER AT 19H30 VENUE TO BE ANNOUNCED WESTERN CLASSICAL STUDENT SHOWCASE The second of the showcases is arranged by François du Toit and features a selection of the performance students of the SACM. The festival offers some fascinating and extremely powerful and moving works, including an evening performance of Prince Bettliegend. 3 The SACM is proud to be involved in this project, and will host two daytime concerts as part of the Performing the Jewish Archive Festival in the Baxter Concert Hall: THURSDAY 14 SEPTEMBER AT 13H00 WALTER, WERNER AND WILHELM S FAR-DISTANT SPRING Expressionist voices from Vienna, Frankfurt and Berlin. This is a chamber concert featuring a string quartet, and some pieces for clarinet and piano as well as voice and piano. And FRIDAY 15 SEPTEMBER AT 13H00 LOOKING FORWARD THROUGH THE PAST: NEW SONGS FROM THE JEWISH ARCHIVE Three of UCT s Composition students have been selected, together with three students from Stellenbosch University, to make settings of WWll concentration camp cabaret poems for voice and piano with clarinet and/or violin and/or cello. TUESDAY 12 SEPTEMBER AT 19H30 Amanda Tiffin and Andrew Lilley present SACM JAZZ PIANO AND JAZZ VOCAL STUDIOS TUESDAY 19 SEPTEMBER AT 19H30 THE SCHOCK FOUNDATION PRIZE FOR The tenth edition of this annual competition for ensemble playing, sponsored by the Schock Foundation. This final round will feature ensembles selected from the chamber music concerts throughout the year. This concert has been cancelled WEDNESDAY 20 SEPTEMBER AT 19H30 The UCT School of Dance presents a concert directed by Lindy Raizenberg. TUESDAY 3 OCTOBER AT 19H30 PIANO EXCHANGE CONCERT Following the last 15 years successes, the piano sections of UCT and Stellenbosch will present an evening of music for piano duet and for two pianos. TUESDAY 10 OCTOBER AT 19H00 FRANÇOIS DU TOIT AND FRANKLIN LAREY (PIANO) Critically acclaimed piano duo, François du Toit and Franklin Larey, present a programme of French music for piano duet by Debussy, Fauré, Ravel and Poulenc. Du Toit and Larey have performed throughout South Africa and with several orchestras. They have appeared at the National Festival of the Arts and in the Mostly Mozart Festival in Cape Town.

4 SATURDAY 14 OCTOBER AT 20H00 CAPE TOWN CITY HALL VENUE MUST CHANGE DUE TO CITY HALL RENOVATIONS The Symphony Choir of Cape Town and The Philharmonia Choir of Cape Town present ELIJAH MENDELSSOHN Conductor: Alexander Fokkens This concert will include a short work by the winner of the Jan Royce Foundation Prize - a new annual prize for best new Orchestral Composition at the South African College of Music. TUESDAY 17 OCTOBER AT 19H30 UCT SYMPHONIC WIND ENSEMBLE Conductor: Alexander Fokkens Programme to be announced. SATURDAY 21 OCTOBER AT 19H30 UNDER THE SKIES What tales did our ancestors tell as they looked up at the Southern skies? Old-world lore is still alive in the home-spun tales of the rural south. Bow songs of these southern cultures will form the basis for a modern retelling of these stories in a contemporary sound-setting. For this concert the UCT Ibuyambo Orchestra will be reimagining its instrumental palette in arrangements that will combine its pan-african instrumental and vocal forces in new ways. TUESDAY 24 OCTOBER AT 19H30 STRUBENHOLM FOYER SECOND WORKSHOP CONCERT OF THE SACM COLLEGIUM MUSICUM With the kind support of the Claude Leo Foundation, the SACM again boasts an early music ensemble of instrumentalists and singers in The course offers students a first encounter with the historically informed way of performance taking into account performance practice of the Baroque period. In addition, most of the recital will be played on period instruments. You are invited to get a glimpse of the students journey of exploration in this second Workshop Concert of the Collegium Musicum. Admission is by donation at the door. TUESDAY 31 OCTOBER AT 19H30 WESTERN CLASSICAL STUDENT SHOWCASE The last of the showcases is arranged by Hendrik Hofmeyr and features a selection of the performance and composition students of the SACM.

5 THURSDAY 2 - SATURDAY 4 NOVEMBER AT 19H30 AND SACM JAZZ FESTIVAL The annual SACM Jazz Festival features the UCT Big Band and other groups from the Jazz Programme, as well as staff members Andrew Lilley, Mike Rossi, Amanda Tiffin and Jason Reolon. Prices per evening: R70 / UCT Staff: R65 TUESDAY 7 NOVEMBER AT 19H30 THE SCHOCK FOUNDATION PRIZE FOR SINGING This is the sixteenth annual voice competition sponsored by the Schock Foundation, in two categories, Best Male Voice and Best Female Voice. The competition is open to full-time students of the SACM who are presently in their second or third year. SATURDAY 11 NOVEMBER AT 19H30 THE UCT CHOIR Details to follow TUESDAY 14 NOVEMBER AT 19H30 THE LAURA SEARLE PRIZE FOR PIANO CONCERTO PLAYING This is the fourteenth edition of the Laura Searle Prize for Piano Concerto Playing, which is open to all piano students at the South African College of Music. Part of the prize is to perform with the UCT Symphony Orchestra in WEDNESDAY 15 NOVEMBER FROM 18H00 THE ROBERT ANDREWS PRIZE Candidates must present a single work, or movement(s) from a work composed in the last hundred years by a composer from the Southern Hemisphere. THE JAMES DE VILLIERS PRIZE A prize for the best performance of a Romantic work 20H00: THE LIONEL BOWMAN PRIZE FOR BEETHOVEN PLAYING This competition is open to all piano students at the SACM and the prize-winner s recital will take place in Admission free TUESDAY 21 NOVEMBER AT 19H30 Arranged by Becky Steltzner Admission is free. A young cast of outstanding singers from Cape Town Opera and the University of Cape Town s Opera School usher in summer with Mozart s most joyful and uplifting masterpiece. Prices: R275, R200, R100.
