4 MIND MAP Relating to the flying away, want to create some paper airplanes. Potential instructions on how to create these, an the insert would allow you to make the airplane pictured on the cover. Blue as a colour has varying symbolisms behind that. Trust, loyalty, wisdom, confidence, intelligence, faith, truth, and heaven. Points to the sky and the sea which connect us with the world. The song written by New Order in the late eighties. Original term came from Kurt Vonneguts book, breakfast of champions. In which had an illustration of a bomb with Goodbye Blue Monday written on it. Relate the term to wanting to get away, blue Monday being that Monday you dont want to go to work, you want to live the dream and fly away. The urge to get away, and leave those blue Mondays behind and make them into something fun and unforgettable. Using the original illustration of the term, was going to take it back an redraw the illustration, without the lyrics inside the bomb. See whether people would recognise or known the connection. Original was designed by Peter Saville and cost them a pound ten to make and create due to the three die cuts. Therefore costing more to make then sell. The sleeve was impractical at the time. Going to go down the route of homelessness, using high quality imagery to evoke feelings. In regards to lyrics Tell me how do I feel An the term blue Monday. Blue Monday connects towards the unhappiest day of the year, Fifthtenth of January.

5 INFLUENCES Peter Saville, orginal creator of the album covers. Well known for creating Jopy divisions album artwork, like his use of block colours, and linework, to create shapes, sounds and beats. Creating music through grpahics, shapes, patterns. Lee Jefferies. An ametuer photographer who tok a keen interest in capturing the homeless people of Los Angels. Very stylized work, poinient figures, and photo that tell a thousand words.

6 ORIGINAL COVERS 12'' Record The colours on the sleeve relate to the floppy disk, that he was presented with by the band. The connection with technology, and those colours the machine would read to play the song. Playing on there very computer based sounds, bringing that to colour. Very clever way of connecting one of our senses with another through the use of colour. The die cuts in the sleeve show this rigid form of design, using shapes again to link in with futuristic technology and music. Peter Saville

7 ORIGINAL COVERS CD Album This was the design for the remix in the eightes. Again it holds this very techno era, circles and colours linking into more how the music moves and what colours we see, than the artists making the music. Creating these circles, creates a beat, a visual pattern. It resonates the ever so prominent beat within the tune, repetitive but getting stronger, shown by the development of colours. The red solid block, that start and the end of the beat, where it rebounds off to create the sound. Like the point in a speaker. Peter Saville

9 IDEA ONE HOMELESS

10 First idea was to play on the term Blue Monday and what that would mean to certain groups of people, from varying social backgrounds. Looked at it from the persepctive of a homeless person and how blue monday is the start of another struggle, another week begging, another week on the streets. The lyrics in the song state - How does it feel to treat me like you do?, playing on that line and the perspective of a homeless person. Using high quality imagery that i have sourced from the internet, choose to focus on black and white photogtpahy as i felt it added an extra tone to the image. Creating a sense of mystery, focusing on the image alone. Wanetd to highlight there faces, and the pain and angious they feel. Enhancing there eyes with a blue tint, to link into the blue monday title. Using typography will write the above lyric.

11 INFLUENCES Took influence from a photographer called Lee Jefferies. He is renound for his set of homeless photographs, that orientate around a place called Skid Row. Skid Row is a community of homeless people in Los Angels. His photos are those of an ametuer yet have been composed by a proffesional. Some have kind eyes, youth at there side, where as others have crinkly eyes they seem wary and tired. With their weathered skin and intense gazes, it allows us as a voyer to tell of the hardship of life on the streets perhaps better than the subjects could themselves. Belive strongly that by looking into someones eyes you can capture there spirit, whether that be bad or good. Hence why i want to focus on the eyes in the pictures taken by Lee. Appropriating images from Lee, and then altering them using photoshop and illustrator, to apply the blue eyes, and add typography. Aswell as using the strong images that capture the eyes, would also like to find one of someones weathered and worked hands, an in similar tones, they represent someones hardship in life. You can tell where they have been what they have done, it says alot about the person without talking to them, casting a judgement upon there looks and lifestyle, They then ask how does it feel to treat me like you do. Linking it all in to the Blue Monday lyrics, but taking my own viewpoint and applying that to create what i see and feel when reading those lyrics. The website is full of amazing photographs of exceptional high quality. Have choosen the ones that i thought had the most adjustable features, and those that would pop out the most. 12 IMAGE ONE DEV ELOPMENT Using the original image taken by Lee Jeffeires. Inputted it into photoshop, intending to change the eye colour to blue, to make it stand out, as you can tell everything from looking into someones eyes. Playing on that notion, that through someones eyes you can see how there feeling, you can imagine how they got to where they are today. Playing on the social backgrounds that vary through society, the impact would not be as big in realtion to a suited and booted gentlemen. Want to bring out the true emotion of the person in the image questioning the lyric How does it feel to treat me like you do?.

13 IMAGE ONE DEV ELOPMENT Opened the original image into photoshop. Using the lasso tool drew around each of the eyes. Held shift when drawing other the other eye, as to combine the selection.

14 IMAGE ONE DEV ELOPMENT Added a adjustment layer, in the form of a hue & saturation. Ticked the colourize button, this then changed the colour of the eyes. Altered the saturation to appear realistic. After blending the layers. Used the brush tool, to get rid of any blue blemishes outside the eye.

15 IMAGE ONE DEV ELOPMENT Rid of all belmishes. The eyes stand out agaisnt the black and white, can adjust using the saturation and contrast tools. To bring the eyes out more. Final close up of the eyes. The use of the light blue instantly draws the viewer straight to the eyes of the person, exactky the intention.

18 T YPOGRAHY IDEAS Haing altered the apperance pf the photgrpah, added the blue eyes. Needed to play around with typography, and the lyrics, how does it feel to treat me like you do. Decided to try out a few techniques. First idea was to create the word HOW, in large lettering with a heavy stroke line, and encase that with the lyric. Choose to try the background in varying colours white and black to see what it would bring to the lyrics and the overall case. Second idea was to create a letterpress effect type. To create this weathered look, it would play alongside the look of the photgraph, and the emtions behind that.

19 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Created individual text boxes for each letter of the word HOW. Using the typeface MOLOT. Alinged to a ruler guide or baseline. After alinging all the letters to the baseline grid, and having the same leading between letters. We chose T YPE, create outlines, the letters now became editable.

20 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Then got rid of the fill from the typeface, took away the stroke line also. Then after selecting the white box just above the right hand corner of each letter and clicking in into the next letters, this allowed us to create text threads. View, extras, show text threads.

21 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Once you have the text thread showing, you can test it out, by clicking on the top corner of the first letter, going to type, fill with placeholder text. This is the text we created filled with placeholder text. It fills the how, does leave a few gaps, which can be worked out changing leading.

22 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Altering the text to say how does it feel to treat me like you do. Using copy and paste fill the word up. Again can alter the leading of the type to fit more words in and give the impression of the word inteneded which is how.

23 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Version one of the final album cover. Do prefer the contrast of the black text agasint the white it stands out alot more, aswell as bringing out the blue on the opposite side. Need to perhaps alter the size of the font used as its hard to read anad make out, will print and alter when seen what the product would look like. By repeating the term how does it feel to treat me like you do, it reiterates how important it is. Keeps the viewer questioning.

24 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Version two of the final album cover. Still undecided as to which one, prefer the contrast agasint the white with the black. Having the whole record sleeve black when printed may cause some issues, have to check before prinitng that both sides are the exact black. Need to make the text a little more legible, as from here its hard to read. The image pops out agaisnt the black background.

25 T YPOGRAPHY ONE Have changed the font, and the font size. which helps the overall legability of the type. Bringing more continuity to the cover. As you need to be able to read and understand what the cover is trying to portray.

Have done that on a very minimal skope. Have written - Blue Monday. Repeating the message how does it make you feel to treat me lke you do. Whilst allowing the viewer to understand a bit more about the reasoning behind the image. using the grey circle and white text stands out.

30 IDEA TWO FLYING AWAY

31 Second idea was more orientated around the saying and what that means to me, than the song lyrics itself. The term Blue Monday links into what is statistically shown as the most depressing day of the year the fifthtenth of January. Wanted to take a look upon that and turn it around, blue monday being the day no one wants to go to work, much like any other monday. The essence of wanting to fly away, and leave all your monday worries behind. Choose to show this using paper aeroplanes. The inspiration came from an old calendar i had, that each day had a new paper aeroplane on it, so you could create it and fly away. Wanted to recreate these, aswell as using varying shades of blue, to add certain tone to the images.

32 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Drew a simple aeroplane using the pen tool on illustrator. Decided to use three colours and alternate them to see what collection would work best agaisnt the plane. The dark blue seems to take away a fair amount of the plane, making it unable to see what it is. Can slightly make it out. Change the colours around.

33 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT After using alternate colour patterns, changin then around with the circles. Again i feel that the dark blue is just to dark making the aeroplane elegible. Final collection of colours. Varying sizes of the circles, certain colours work with certain circles.

34 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Decided to carry on using the circles of colour, but adding in two aeroplanes, to give the effect of taking off. Using the dark blue again, have the same problems with legibility, The light blue works with the planes, giving it a nice tranquil and calm feeling of getting away, taking off somewhere.

35 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Using the moveish blue, has again heightened the aeroplane, feel this colour works best with the cover. Nice and simplistic. Using one circleand just the one aeroplane, going donw the simplistic route, yet the dark blue makes it hard to see the plane. Try it with the lighter colours.

36 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT This brings out the aeroplane and works agaisnt the white, you can clearly see the plane, doesnt give the effect of it taking off and this want to get away though. Highlights the plane well, yet doesnt give the effect of taking off.

37 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Tried to give the planes a three dimentional effect, as is they where flying out of the cover. Varying techniques on either side with the dark blue more prominent on the left and the light blue on the right. Creating a swatch out of the previous three planes, then adding this onto the cover, created this texture. Like the way the planes appear to be leaving the cover.

38 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Using the calendar that i took inspiration from created these. Not all the instructions are on the cover, as it wouldnt of been equal, therefore not visually pleasing. Second attempt at recreating the calendar that consisted of paper aeroplanes. Using the dark blue to show the folds in the paper also linking into the name of the song.

39 AEROPLANE DEV ELOPMENT Very simple take on the three circles but using the colours from that and inputting them into each plane, like this effect of them taking off going from light to dark blue. Going from dark to light blue, flying of the page.
