2 ASTA Appreciates Pirastro GmbH for Its Generosity in Sponsoring the 2012 National Orchestra Festival Who will be named Grand Champion for the 2012 National Orchestra Festival? Come and listen as these fantastic groups compete for the title. The selected Grand Champion orchestra performs a winner s concert on Saturday, March 24 at 11:15 a.m. 2

3 Welcome! Dear Festival Enthusiasts, It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the ninth annual National Orchestra Festival (NOF) sponsored by Pirastro GmbH. The 2012 NOF brings together 14 spectacular ensembles representing 14 schools from across the United States. Congratulations on your hard work and accomplishment for being accepted into ASTA s premier festival. The NOF is proud to present some of the nation s finest music educators as our adjudicators and clinicians. Each group will receive taped and written comments, as well as a rating by each of the three concert adjudicators. Following the concert, our highly qualified clinicians will provide each group with a clinic designed to enhance their music-making abilities. In addition, each orchestra will have the opportunity during the conference to work with master class clinicians. These clinicians have national and international reputations as musicians and teachers. ASTA is committed to delivering the highest artistic and educational experience to its members and their students. We are certain that the 2012 NOF will meet that goal. Harry Allen Overtstreet wrote, I have my own particular sorrows, loves, delights; and you have yours. But sorrow, gladness, yearning, hope, love, belong to all of us, in all times and in all places. Music is the only means whereby we feel these emotions in their universality. The students and teachers involved in performing at the NOF are blessed to have such an opportunity to discover and present the beauty and excitement of music. Thank you for your devotion to your preparation and for your performance here today. Sincerely, David Littrell Organizing Chair 1

15 Elizabeth A.H. Green School Educator Award The Elizabeth A.H. Green School Educator Award is given annually to a school string teacher with a current and distinguished career in a school orchestral setting. The award winner is assessed by their impact on students, school, and community. Anne Guevara Sponsored by: William Harris Lee Anne Guevara has been with Putnam City Schools in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for 29 years and in the profession for 34 years. In her nomination, colleague Dawn Thrailkill writes, Anne is a master teacher. She sees potential in each student, fosters their strengths and enables them to grow both in an individual and ensemble setting. Her expectations are high, and she encourages, motivates, and does not allow mediocrity to be an option. Guevara is in constant motion and her energy and drive contribute to her success. In addition to teaching fourth and fifth grade orchestra at two elementary schools, Putnam City West High School, and being the district orchestra chair, Guevara also directs the Silver Strings of Putnam City a strolling ensemble. She has also served the profession through her work as chair of the Oklahoma Alliance for Arts Education, past president of the Oklahoma Chapter of ASTA, and two-time all-state orchestra chair. Her many honors and awards include Wal-Mart Teacher of the Year, Oklahoma Chapter of ASTA Teacher of the Year, Golden Apple Award recipient from the Putnam City Schools Foundation, Exemplary Orchestra Teacher from the Oklahoma Music Educators Association, and the Governor s Arts in Education Award. ASTA expresses a special thank you to the following clinicians for their dedication and service to the National Orchestra Festival. Emory Clements Larisa Elisha Steven Elisha Michael Heald Skip Taylor Additionally, we couldn t have done it without the help of Michael Giel from Collins Hill High School and Gregory Pritchard from Mountain View High School who generously allowed us to borrow their schools orchestra shells.
