2 Welcome to Growing in Grace, a comprehensive children s music curriculum. The heart of Growing in Grace is the music. The songs appearing in each unit have been carefully written to ensure they are developmentally appropriate for the child, both theologically and musically. With understandable texts, singable melodies, and interesting accompaniments, these songs will help each child develop his or her natural singing skills, increase in musical knowledge, and grow spiritually. The Year 2 theme is Growing in Grace With Hearts and Hands and Voices. Songs and activities are based on scriptural concepts throughout the Bible that emphasize reasons we sing: to praise God, to remember His Word, to serve others, to share His Word, and to pray. The curriculum package includes two CDs with demonstration and accompaniment recordings, along with teaching materials. Steps for Using Growing in Grace Print the checklists first to track items as they are printed. Follow the Teaching Steps instructions to prepare the items. What s New this Semester? Improved labeling has been added to all materials for easier organization. Piano Plus instrumental enhancements have been added to the Demo and Tracks of selected songs where stylistically appropriate. The scores of traditional instrumentations are included as always. However, instrumental scores of the electronic additions are not available. Printing Tips Ensure the Auto Rotate and Center option is checked in the print dialogue box. Color items may be printed and used successfully in grayscale if a color printer is not available. Many items may be easily enlarged to 11 x 17. Some material should be printed on card stock and/or laminated. See Teaching Steps. Print as many copies of curriculum materials and songs as needed for your choir.

MATERIALS NEEDED Stand Up and Praise the Lord Student Pages Melody Match KIDPage MP3 or CD Demo 2 MP3 or CD Track 15 MP3 or CD Player Piano or keyboard (optional) Pencils or markers Highlighter for each child (optional) PREPARATION Print Stand Up and Praise the Lord Student Pages for each child and the teacher. 14 ACTIVITY TEACHING STEPS Thanksliving Rhythmic Speech SMALL GROUP ACTIVITY Thanksliving Rhythmic Speech gives children an opportunity to play instruments, read music, and learn the meaning of Hebrews 13: MATERIALS NEEDED Thanksliving Rhythmic Speech KIDPage and Ostinati Percussion instruments: cabasa, claves, hand drum, finger cymbals Bible marked at Hebrews 13:15-16 PREPARATION Print a copy of the Thanksliving Rhythmic Speech KIDPage and Ostinati for each child. Gather the percussion instruments needed. Thanksliving Visual 1. Learn the rhythmic speech. Establish a steady beat using body percussion: Beat 1 - pat Beat 2 - snap Beat 3 - clap Beat 4 - snap Echo speak the rhythmic speech in 2-meas. phrases. Distribute the Thanksliving Rhythmic Speech KIDPages to the children. Lead children to speak the entire rhythmic speech. 2. Rehearse the ostinato rhythms. Echo clap and speak each ostinato pattern with all children. Assign ostinato patterns to children. Rehearse the patterns separately, then together, until children are secure. 3. Perform the rhythmic speech with the ostinato. Cue each ostinato pattern to begin in sequence, four meas. apart. Perform the rhythmic speech with children who are not performing the ostinato patterns, or speak it for the children if they are all playing instruments. Exchange instruments and repeat. 4. Discuss the meaning of the text. Read Hebrews 13: Through Him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge His name. 16 Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God. Explain that a sacrifice is an offering. One sacrifice of praise is the fruit of lips. The words of praise to God that we sing and speak with our lips become our offering. Another sacrifice of praise to God is the good things we do to help others. God wants us to praise Him with both words and deeds. 15 KIDPAGE Older Pipe Organ Adventures The pipe organ is a grand musical instrument! Mozart called it the king of instruments. Pipe organs can range in size from a single short keyboard to huge instruments with over 10,000 pipes! The pipe organ is played from a console area that usually has three or four keyboards, a pedalboard, and other controls. The keys on each keyboard typically span five octaves. The pedalboard, played by the feet, covers two-and-a-half octaves. When an organist presses the keys of an organ, air flows through the pipes to create the sound. Church organs are perfect for accompanying congregational singing. They make worship so oyful! Compare these two organ pictures!
