3 FOREWORD It is imossible for me to imagine Christmas without music The music of Christmas accomanies everything I do during this season from my worshi at church to my shoing at the local mall I find the constant sounds to be exhilarating! The familiar strains of favorite carols ermeate our homes, cars, churches, and stores as we celebrate anew the oy and festivities of Christmas The collection you hold in your hand is comrised for the most art of newer Christmas songs; melodies that have become contemorary Christmas classics in their own right The have enriched the canon of our traditional carols with fresh melodies and harmonies areciated by ersons young and old alike They reveal a art of the age-old story of Christ s birth with a fresh musical voice They deserve, in my humble oinion, to be reserved and eretuated by regular inclusion in our Christmas worshi and concert gatherings That is why they are included in this collection I hoe you will find them ractical and insiring as you add them to your Christmas reertoire The otential of being able to mix and match virtually any combination of C and B-flat instruments adds to the versatility of this collection And the variety of styles reresented in the collection hoefully ensures that you will find something suitable for any occasion or need during the Christmas season Merry Christmas! Lloyd Larson ERFORMANCE NOTES With the strong interest for using instrumentalists in worshi, articularly at Christmas, there is always a need for music that will accommodate numerous instrumental combinations By design, Contemorary Christmas Classics is intended to be a versatile resource that will meet the needs of a wide range of duet combinations with keyboard accomaniment The C and B-flat instrumental arts rovide numerous configurations by which these arrangements may be erformed: any two C instruments, any two B-flat instruments, or any combination of C and B-flat instruments Having both arts scored on each extracted art even enables one instrument to carry art I for a while and then move to art II at a later oint in the music, if desired hrasing and slur indications have been sarsely included Use your best musicianshi in interreting and including such An additional erformance consideration is to note that there may be assages where a given instrument may choose to lay an octave higher than notated This might, for examle, be highly aroriate for flute or violin, but maybe not an oboe Again, sensitive musicianshi should guide these interretive decisions
