2 Biograhy or Kenneth D. Froelich Described as "energetic, exciting, and rhythmically dynamic" and "set with imagination and imagery," comoser KENNETH D. FROELICH s music has been erormed internationally in England, Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia, Finland, Canada, Peru, Argentina, Chile, and China, as well as numerous major cities across the United States. Emerging as a vibrant new voice in the world o contemorary chamber and orchestral music, Kenneth has been honored with awards rom ASCAP, the National Association o Comosers/USA, Meet the Comoser, the Percussive Arts Society, the American Comosers Forum, and the Society o Comosers Inc. Kenneth s works have been resented by such acclaimed ensembles as the American Comosers Orchestra, Duo6, Earlay, the Emyrean Ensemble, the Caliornia E.A.R Unit, the Jolles Duo, the Indianaolis Symhonic Orchestra, Conundrum, the University o New Mexico Percussion Ensemble, the University o Southern Caliornia Symhony Orchestra, the Indiana University New Music Ensemble, and the Orheus Ensemble o Fresno. Some o his more recent works include PIANO QUARTET No. 1 (2012), remiered by Paciic Serenades; SMALL MESSAGES (2012), remiered by the UNLV Wind Orchestra; NERD SONGS (2012), remiered by sorano Ann Moss o CMASH; and PORTRAITS OF MT. RUSHMORE (2012), remiered by USAF Brass in Blue at Mt. Rushmore National Park. Kenneth received both his Doctorate o Music and Masters o Music degrees rom Indiana University, and received his Bachelors o Music degree summa cum laude rom the University o Southern Caliornia in His rincial comosition teachers include Claude Baker, Don Freund, Sven-David Sandstrőm, Eugene O Brien, Donald Crocket, Frederick Lesemann, Morten Lauridsen, and Erica Muhl. Kenneth currently resides in Fresno, CA with his wie Jennier and daughter Katerina, where he is Associate Proessor in Music Comosition at Caliornia State University, Fresno and director o the Fresno New Music Festival. He reviously taught at Ball State University in Muncie, IN, and at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Sewanee, TN. Kenneth s ercussion ensemble work ACCIDENTAL MIGRATION is available through C. Additional scores are available through JOMAR Press and his website at NOTES FOR Sonata or Clarinet and PIano The rincile idea or my Sonata or Clarinet and Piano is to musically reresent imagery, memories, and ersonal desires that are all just out o reach. Each o the three untitled movements takes on one ossible asect o this concet. The irst movement, marked with the temo descrition Intangible, resents ragments o melodies made u o ast, blurry igurations. These ragments reresent imagery that is out-o-ocus and not quite ercetible. While there is clear direction in the orm o the movement, the lines themselves are mercurial - constantly changing - leaving the music with an unsettled absence o security. The second movement resents a simle melody in the style o a lilting French song. This song - described in the music as "a orgotten melody" - is not an actual quotation, but is instead designed to remind the listener o similar melodies, as i conjuring u memories o melodies. Over time, the song slowly descends chromatically, changing its harmony rom one key to the next as i melting away into nothing. The inal movement is the emotional crux o the sonata, beginning with music that reresents unrelenting rustration. While not seciically rogrammatic, this rustration can be heard as a quasi-culmination o the rior two movements, arising out o the inability to not obtain any o the images or memories rom those movements. This sense o rustration is amliied by a musical motive that consistently reaches or a high E without ever successully breaking through to the next higher itch. Over the course o the movement, rustration is relaced by imatience, cynicism, and mocking, beore returning to rustration once more. The music climaxes with one last gas o the clarinet's high E beore dramatically shiting to a surrisingly eaceul coda. This coda can be heard as a inal accetance o not obtaining any o these "out o reach" goals, but that would not be the entire story. At the very end o the movement, a inal ragment o the song rom movement two returns, reresenting the out-o-reach dream that ersists - hoe. This work is both dedicated to and comosed or clarinetist Jennier Ostwalt, my wie and lie artner whom to this day I owe and thank or giving me the courage and insiration to continue to reach or that which seems unattainable.
