2 A concert a day will carry your woes away. Just what the doctor ordered eight months of ethereal, world-class music at David P. Gardner Hall on the University of Utah campus. The bitter pill we swallow each day when we open the paper or turn on the news can make anyone heart-sick. But treatment is in hand with 20 professional and more than 60 student performances, prescribed courtesy of the School of Music. And in these financially challenging times, you need a cure that won t kill you. Our student performances cost less than a movie ticket; our faculty recital series is free; and our Virtuoso Series, featuring internationally lauded guest artists, is a fraction of the price you d pay in other cities. Student Performances Professional Events Virtuoso Series World-Renowned Masters Intimate recital concerts by the established concert artists of our day and the stars of the future. Past performers have included violinist Joshua Bell, pianist Murray Perahia, and the Vienna Boys Choir. The Virtuoso Series is made possible by a generous endowment from the: Lead Season Sponsor: Faculty Recital Series Free, one-hour concerts by our faculty virtuosi on Sunday evenings, when parking is readily available. Showcase concerts feature several faculty performing groups, and Spotlight concerts highlight a faculty soloist or small ensemble. of Salt Lake City Eight concerts by internationally acclaimed chamber music groups, presented in partnership with the School of Music. Master Classes Allow our students to learn from legendary performers. The public is always welcome! Bands Our bands include our premier Wind Ensemble; the highly visible Marching Utes and Pep Band, which perform at athletic events; the Symphonic Band; and the award-winning Percussion Ensemble. Chamber Music The school offers a variety of instrumental ensembles, including the New Music Ensemble, a Wind Ensemble, and multiple string quartets. Choirs More than 150 students sing in the school s three choirs: the internationally acclaimed University of Utah Singers, the A Cappella Choir, and the Women s Choir. Jazz Our award-winning jazz program includes two big bands, numerous combos, and two guitar ensembles. With more than 75 majors, the piano area features its students in two concerts each year the SummerArts Competition and its 100-performer Monster Concert. Orchestras The school boasts three orchestral ensembles: the Utah Philharmonia, our premier orchestra; the Utah Philharmonia Chamber Orchestra, an elite string group; and the Utah Campus Symphony, with both music- and non-music majors. Opera Solo voice students collaborate annually to produce the Lyric Opera Ensemble s fall Scenes program and a fully staged opera in Kingsbury Hall each spring. 5 2009 University of Utah Singers November The University of Utah Singers, our 45-voice premier choral ensemble, has gained international stature through convention performances, concert tours, and participation in prestigious festivals and competitions. The six-year-old choir won its third international competition in Marktdoberdorf, Germany at the end of its successful month-long concert tour of Eastern Europe. 9 2010 April / May Opera Each spring, our vocal students collaborate to produce a fully staged opera in Kingsbury Hall. This year s selection, Poulenc s tragic lyric opera, Dialogues of the Carmelites, tells the story of a wealthy young heroine, Blanche de la Force, who enters an order of devout nuns seeking refuge, but instead faces her fears and masters her life as the French revolution unfolds. The powerful, highly emotional score deals with themes of political power and freedom, personal spirituality, redemption, and ultimate sacrifice.
