6 Welcome to the Art of Sound: Summer Brass Festival 2010 at Menlo School Artists of the Bay Brass and I collaborated for the first time in 2003 to create The Art of Sound Institute and Festival, driven by the dream of fusing artistry of the highest caliber with education for talented students. Love of music motivates us. This Festival, and the Institute around which it centers, are all about the music. Participants, many of them aided by generous donors, come from the Bay Area and the world to immerse themselves in the art of sound and the delights of musical interpretation. Here, you ll listen to great musicians of the brass world: The Bay Brass, comprised of artists from the San Francisco Symphony and other important orchestras. Guest artists this year are Mark Inouye, principal trumpet with the San Francisco Symphony, Gabriele Cassone, international trumpet soloist and historic instrument specialist, and Sergio Carolino, international tuba soloist inspiring teachers, renowned as chamber musicians and soloists, with multiple recordings to their credit. Summer Brass Institute participants flock to Menlo from all over the Bay Area, the United States and the world to study with these artists, and many of the students are well on their way to careers of their own. Aged from 13-27, participants in past years have gone on to take the world by storm with their music and their sound, winning principal chairs in youth orchestras, finding places in conservatories, attaining careers as professional performers, and rejoicing in their musical lives. As our gift to the community, we present many events free of charge. Whether you re an aficionado of the radiant sound of brass, or a listener hearing this music for the first time, you ll find an engaging spirit here and a warm welcome from all of us at The Art of Sound Festival of Brass. 7 Gabriele Cassone: Two Classes The Historic Art of Trumpet 7 pm Thursday July 8 Admission: $20 (Participants admitted free of charge) The Virtuosic Art of Trumpet 7 pm Friday July 9 Admission: $20 (Participants admitted free of charge) Gabriele Cassone received his conservatory diploma in trumpet following studies in performance with Mario Catena and studies in composition with Lucian Chailly. He is not only worldrenowned as a historical artist, performing on period instruments (Baroque natural trumpet, Classical keyed trumpet, rotary valve trumpet and cornet a pistons) but enjoys equal fame as a musician expert in new music. Luciano Berio selected Cassone to record his Sequenza X for solo trumpet, and to premiere his Kol- Od, performed with the Ensemble Intercontemporain under the direction of Pierre Boulez. Famous international conductors have requested Cassone for performances of the most demanding trumpet repertoire. Also, John Eliot Gardiner named him principal trumpet for the entire cycle by the English Baroque Soloists of Bach s Cantatas and Second Brandenburg concerto; Ton Koopman, director of the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra, requested that he solo for the recording of Bach s Cantata BWV 51. He is frequently featured as guest lecturer and teacher in master classes around the world. His website: ~page 4~

8 Directions to Menlo School: Directions From Hwy 101: take the Woodside Rd. exit and go west; at El Camino Real, go south; at the Valparaiso Ave. light, go right (west); at the first stop sign, look for a Menlo School sign on your right; turn in to the parking lot. From Hwy. 280: take the Woodside Rd. exit and go east; at Alameda de las Pulgas, go south (right); at the Valparaiso Ave. light, go east (left); look for a big Menlo School sign on the left at a traffic light and turn left, into the parking lot. Directions to Memorial Church at Stanford University: From Hwy 101: from either direction, take the Embarcadero Rd exit, going West. After crossing El Camino Real, Embarcadero joins Arboretum; stay to your left and bear left on Campus Drive East. Turn right on Mayfield, and look for the parking lot behind Braun Music Center, Dinkelspiel Auditorium and Tresidder Student Union. Park there; it s free of charge after 4 pm and on Sundays. To reach Memorial Church, walk straight east past Tresidder and the Old Union. From Hwy 280: from either direction, take Sand Hill Road exit and go east on Sand Hill. Turn right on Alameda de los Pulgas, then left on Junipero Serra. Turn left at the first light, Campus Drive West; turn right on Santa Teresa and right again on Lomita, then left on Lagunita which takes you to the parking lot behind Tresidder Student Union, Dinkelspiel Auditorium and Braun Music Center. 9 Young Talent in Action: Two Performances Radiant Chamber Brass Friday July 16 8 pm Spieker Ballroom Admission: Free of charge Enjoy the radiance of brass quintet artistry, an intimate yet powerful form of chamber music, here. Participants share the results of nine days spent focusing on music and interpretation, along with the art of sound. The Art of Symphonic Brass Saturday July 17 8 pm Spieker Ballroom Admission: Free of charge Thrill to the developing sound of Institute participants here. After these intensive days of supportive coaching and rehearsal, they perform masterworks of the repertoire for brass. ~page 12~

10 Sergio Carolino, tuba: Festival Guest Artist 8 pm Saturday July 10 Admission: $20 (Participants admitted free of charge) Sergio Carolino is a Yamaha artist, and principal tuba of the Portuguese National Orchestra. He teaches at the National Superior Orchestra Academy in Portugal, and he travels around the world giving classes and performing. Along with classical music, he avidly explores a wide variety of styles ranging from jazz, rock, and Dixieland to improvised music. His website: ~page 5~

11 Festival Artists and Select Participants The Splendor of Brass: Chamber Music Saturday July 10 3 pm Admission: Free of charge Guest artists and members of the Bay Brass and Fellowship young artists perform chamber music for brass ensembles of various colors and sizes. Hear these artists featured in music of Mahler, Schumann, Korngold; hear the energetic quintet of Mark Inouye, Adam Luftman, Nicole Cash, Tim Higgins and Peter Wahrhaftig performing the Plog Four Sketches. And a winning assortment of young artists perform alongside their teachers. ~page 6~

12 The Art of Tim Higgins Trombone Recital 3 pm Saturday July 17 Admission: $20 Appointed SFS principal trombone in 2009, Tim Higgins was previously acting second trombone with the National Symphony. A Houston native, Tim graduated from Northwestern University and has performed with the Milwaukee Symphony, Virginia Symphony, Chicago Symphony, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, Washington National Opera, and Baltimore Symphony. In 2005, he won the Robert Marsteller Competition and the ITA Trombone Quartet Competition, both from the International Trombone Association. While at the Tanglewood Music Center, Tim was awarded the Grace B. Upton Award for Outstanding Fellow. He has soloed with various ensembles, most recently performing the Creston Concerto; SBI is proud to host his first Bay Area recital. ~page 11~

13 Robert Ward The Art of the Lyric Horn 8 pm Wednesday July 14 Admission: $20 (participants admitted free of charge) Robert Ward performs music by Jan Koetsier, inviting listeners into the light-filled sound-world of the horn. Creating a musical line is one of Bob s specialties, whether soloing in symphonic literature or in chamber works and horn-piano collaborations. This evening he explores his practice of creating the line. Principal Horn with the San Francisco Symphony, Bob is responsible for countless section solos, most notably in the Mahler symphony cycle in which the SFS achieves such dramatic musical and expressive power. Frequent forays into brass and woodwind chamber music, combined with his work in the Bay Brass, round out Bob s artistic profile. ~page 10~

14 Mark Lawrence: The Art of Trombone Sonic Power and Grace 8 pm Sunday July 12 Admission: $20 (Participants admitted free of charge) Principal trombonist with the San Francisco Symphony for years, Mark Lawrence has also performed and recorded chamber music with the Center City Brass Quintet, and he s a founding member of the Bay Brass as well. His sound on the trombone is celebrated for its power, expressive flexibility, tonal color, and a vibrant grace. Mark is also sought after as a teacher who inspires and motivates his students with relentless energy. ~page 7~

15 The Art of Nicole Cash: Horn Recital 4 pm Monday July 12 Admission free of charge Hear the San Francisco Symphony s newly appointed Associate Principal Horn, Nicole Cash, perform a winning array of music for horn. Known for her style, strength and finesse, Nicole Cash makes her San Francisco debut recital here with repertoire she ll play at the International Horn Society in Australia. See what the excitement is about! *************** Mark Inouye: The Art of the Principal Trumpet 8 pm Monday July 12 Admission: $20 (participants admitted free of charge) Mark Inouye attended the University of California at Davis as a civil engineer before transferring and graduating from the Juilliard School, where he was a founding member of the Julliard Jazz Sextet at Lincoln Center. Equally at home playing classical and jazz music, has held principal trumpet positions with the Houston and Charleston symphony orchestras. As a soloist, Mark performed with the Houston Symphony, with the New World Symphony, and with the Tanglewood Wind Ensemble and Seiji Ozawa for volumes 3 and 4 of the video production Marsalis on Music. 16 The Bay Brass and Robert Huw Morgan, University Organist The Art of Sound: Festival Concert Tuesday July 13 8 pm Memorial Church, Stanford University Admission: Free of charge The Bay Brass, comprised of brass musicians in the San Francisco Symphony and other important orchestras, are a collective, with no conductor or director. They re selfgoverning, and members share roles in composing, arranging, and conducting. The Bay Brass sound has a spiritual quality distinguished among similar ensembles glowing, radiant, with no blaring hard edges. Young players come to learn this art of sound, to explore new ways of thinking about ensemble and orchestral playing, to build habits of mind and heart that help unleash their musical potential; select participants take the stage in this concert, gathering inspiration from the opportunity to play side by side with these artists. ~page 9~
