MASTERPIECE 1 CapePOPS! 1 PASSPORT TO AMERICA SYMPHONY AT THE DISCO SAT September 22, :30 PM SUN September 23, :00 PM The Chatham Chorale Joseph Marchio, Music Director SAT October 13, :00 PM & 7:30 PM SUN October 14, :00 PM Boogie Wonder Band ELLIS ISLAND: THE DREAM OF AMERICA Peter Boyer THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER Igor Stravinsky CIRCUS POLKA: FOR A YOUNG ELEPHANT Igor Stravinsky SUNSET BOULEVARD SUITE Franz Waxman AMERICA, AN EPIC RHAPSODY IN THREE PARTS (PART 3) Ernst Bloch OVERTURE TO DREAM OF THE RED CHAMBER Bright Sheng Join us as we open our season with a journey to our own country, featuring Ellis Island: The Dream of America, a powerful celebration of the historic immigrant experience by composer Peter Boyer. This innovative work brings together soaring music, historical images and text from the Ellis Island archives, and the voices of real people who entered the United States in pursuit of the American dream. Among those who came here in the 20th century were many important composers we present works by some of these talented immigrants, including the brilliant Igor Stravinsky. Get ready to celebrate good times! The Boogie Wonder Band joins the Cape Symphony for a unique experience where disco meets classical music in a high-energy show that knocks your socks off! We turn the concert hall into Studio 54, bringing traditional disco to a whole new level, loaded with violins, violas, cellos, trumpets, trombones and more. Groove in your seat to hits like Night Fever, On the Radio, and Disco Inferno! No velvet rope here everyone is welcome to join the party! 4 Guest Artist Partner 5
MASTERPIECE 2 CapePOPS! 2 MAGNIFICENT MOZART SAT November 3, :30 PM SUN November 4, :00 PM Musica Sacra Mary Beekman, Artistic Director Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart HOLIDAY ON THE CAPE FRI November 30, :00 PM & 8:00 PM SAT December 1, :00 PM & 7:30 PM SUN December 2, :00 PM & 5:00 PM The Chatham Chorale Joseph Marchio, Music Director Vintage Vocal Quartet REQUIEM EINE KLEINE NACHTMUSIK musica sacra MARY BEEKMAN ARTISTIC DIRECTOR In a famous scene from the movie Amadeus, Mozart dictates his final opus to his rival Salieri, feverish on his deathbed as he hears the beautiful music in his head. We look at the myths and facts behind his Requiem, an extraordinary affirmation of the power of the human spirit, and with Musica Sacra, Boston s premier early music choral ensemble, we perform the choral masterpiece from our hearts. Incredibly, the Cape Symphony has never played Mozart s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music) until now, although this tuneful serenade may be his most popular work. Our annual tradition is the way you start the holiday season! Celebrate home and hearth, the warmth of family and friends, and the music that brings it all back, year after year. Revel in classic holiday songs, gorgeous carols, and a Celtic Christmas celebration. Raise your voices in song, along with the orchestra and our good friends the Chatham Chorale. We welcome special guests the Vintage Vocal Quartet their swinging sound is a delight. Spend the holidays with us! 6 Guest Artist Partner 7
SPECIAL EVENT MASTERPIECE 3 NEW YEAR S DAY PARTY TUES January 1, :00 PM OPERA WITHOUT WORDS SAT January 19, :30 PM SUN January 20, :00 PM Ji-Hae Park, Violin When we went to our first Cape Symphony concert, we said to ourselves, We no longer need to go into Boston to hear good music. ELAINE USHER, BREWSTER Kick off 2019 in style with the Cape Symphony New Year s Day Party! Enjoy this light-hearted celebration, with lilting Viennese waltzes, lively marches and most of all, fun! Spend this holiday afternoon with fellow lovers of live music and be entertained by a concert full of surprises to get your year started. Before movies, opera was the grand stage upon which stories were told. With its mythic battle between the forces of good and evil, an inspiration for modern heroic sagas like Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings, Wagner s epic cycle The Ring requires an enormous orchestra to support the larger-than-life music. Another dramatic tale, Bizet s Carmen shocked audiences by telling a gritty tale of passion and jealousy. In Waxman s Carmen Fantasie, the violin is Carmen, and international star Ji-Hae Park embodies her fiery virtuosity. The overture from Rossini s comic farce The Silken Ladder provides levity amidst Symphonic excerpts from THE RING Richard Wagner CARMEN FANTASIE Franz Waxman LA SCALA DI SETA (THE SILKEN LADDER) OVERTURE Gioachino Rossini 8 the drama. The orchestra is the diva in this extraordinary event! 9
CapePOPS! 3 MASTERPIECE 4 THE WIZARD OF OZ IN CONCERT BEETHOVEN UNLEASHED SAT April 6, :30 PM SAT February 9, :00 PM & 7:30 PM SUN February 10, :00 PM Guest Artist Partner SUN April 7, 2019 Martina Filjak, Piano Ludwig van Beethoven SYMPHONY NO VARIATIONS IN C MINOR PIANO CONCERTO NO. 3 3:00 PM Attending Cape Symphony performances has greatly enriched my life. MARIE GATES, WEST YARMOUTH Follow the yellow brick road! In this rare concert presentation, the Cape Symphony partners with Cotuit Center for the Arts to perform the original lush Harold Arlen score and the script of The Wizard of Oz. The familiar songs like Over the Rainbow, We re Off to See the Wizard and If I Only Had a Brain transport you to the Land of Oz, where you meet up with old friends Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion. Fun for all ages! Like a rock star, Beethoven wrote music that was raw, unfiltered and personal. Performing without a conductor to filter his singular voice, the Cape Symphony musicians are set free to unleash the music of Beethoven. Concertmaster Jae Cosmos Lee takes the lead for the ebullient, uplifting Symphony No. 1 the orchestra will literally be on its feet! Pianist Martina Filjak, compared by critics to a tiger for her fierce yet graceful playing, comes center stage for piano pieces from the pantheon
MASTERPIECE 5 SPECIAL EVENT LEGENDARY LOVE STORIES SAT May 4, 2019 SUN May 5, :30 PM 3:00 PM The Chatham Chorale Joseph Marchio, Music Director Natasha Paremski, Piano THE VERY BEST OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN SAT June 8, 2019 SUN June 9, :30 PM 3:00 PM Peter Mansfield, Guest Conductor Michelle Chassé, Director and Choreographer ROMEO AND JULIET Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky DAPHNIS AND CHLOE SUITE NO. 2 Maurice Ravel RHAPSODY ON A THEME OF PAGANINI Sergei Rachmaninoff Passion and romance come together to create the greatest love stories ever set to music, like the famous love theme from Tchaikovsky s Romeo and Juliet. Many romantic movies come to life with the gorgeous 18th variation of Rachmaninoff s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, most famously, Somewhere in Time. And Ravel s score for the ballet Daphnis and Chloe provides a sensuous background to the charming courtship that unfolds on a Greek island. Dynamic Natasha Paremski makes her Cape Symphony debut see why she s beloved around the world. Come hear these timeless melodies of love. June is bustin out all over with our special tribute to the beloved music of Rodgers & Hammerstein! Musicals like Oklahoma, Carousel, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, and The King and I are impossible to imagine without the iconic songs that we re all still humming today. Rodgers & Hammerstein created the Golden Age of musical theater and guest conductor Peter Mansfield returns to the podium to take us there. Rising stars of Broadway from the nationally acclaimed Boston Conservatory at Berklee Theater Division join the Cape Symphony in a song-and-dance extravaganza. 12 Guest Artist Partner 13
