2 THE COMOSER Dwayne S. Milburn (b. 96) is a native o Baltimore Maryland. He received his B..A. in Music rom CLA in 986 and his M.M. in Orchestral Conducting rom the Cleveland Institute o Music in 99. He comleted his h.d. in Comosition at CLA in 009. During his undergraduate career Mr. Milburn was an arranger or the CLA Band and Choral rograms. Additionally he worked or the Secial roects Division o ABC- TV as an arranger. on graduation he became the Director o Cadet Music or the nited States Military Academy at West oint. Among his many duties he served as the conductor or the internationally renowned West oint Glee Club leading that grou in erormances at some o the inest concert halls in the country including Carnegie Hall Myerson Hall and the Kennedy Center. During his studies in Cleveland he contributed several arrangements to the Cleveland Orchestra. In 99 Mr. Milburn entered the nited States Army Band rogram as one o twenty-our commissioned oicer conductors. His duty stations included ort Monroe Virginia; Washington D.C.; and Heidelberg Germany. He concluded his military career as the Commander and Conductor o the Army Ground orces Band in Atlanta Georgia having reached the rank o Maor. Mr. Milburn is active as a comoser conductor and adudicator. His choral and wind ensemble comositions are ublished by Alred Ludwig Masters and the Neil A. Kos Music Comany. In addition to his duties as Comoser-in- Residence or the St. Matthew s Music Guild his works have been erormed by some o the inest collegiate and roessional ensembles in the nation. Two o his works or band American Hymnsong Suite and Variations on St. atrick s Breastlate are eatured in volume six o Teaching Music Through erormance in Band edited by Dr. Eugene Cororon. In 00 Mr. Milburn conducted the Kennedy Center s Annual Messiah Sing-Along and he has acted as an adudicator or the Conductor s Art Worksho co-hosted by the niversity o Wisconsin-Madison and the Wisconsin National Guard Band.

3 THE COMOSITION In early 004 I was contacted by Mr. e Looman Director o Instrumental Music or the Calvin Christian Schools in Michigan. Mr. Looman had recently heard a erormance o American Hymnsong Suite and wanted to entrust me with a secial roect in memory o a ormer student Nick Stegeman. By all accounts Nick who had lost his lie several years earlier was a tremendous resence in his amily school and church communities. Soon ater his assing the band boosters began raising unds to celebrate Nick in one o his avorite activities band music. I immediately acceted this heartelt invitation and requested Mr. Looman ut me in touch with Nick s arents to get a better icture o their son so that my eorts might do him ustice. Several weeks went by beore I heard rom them but their note aected me greatly. While they shared great stories about the un-loving and talented side o their son I was most overcome by their continued dee sense o loss and knew that beore I could address the lighter side o Nick irst I had to oer my musical condolences to his amily and riends. Combining two tunes the Lutheran hymn I Thou But Suer God to Guide Thee and the American olk song oor Wayarin Stranger I began writing what would become Meditation. It is actually the second o a three movements that comrise a suite entitled Music or Bright Youth a title that reers not only to Nick Stegeman but all the young musicians with whom it has been my leasure to work over the years as well. While the outer movements are lighter in tone and a great deal o un to lay and hear it is Meditation that carries the emotional weight o the entire work and is ultimately the most satisying. On ebruary 005 the combined bands o the Calvin Christian Schools under the direction o Mr. Looman remiered the entire suite as a art o their annual winter concert. Nick Stegeman s younger sister was in the ensemble and his arents along with a host o amily and riends were in attendance. While I was unable to be hysically resent I remain deely honored to have been asked to contribute this iece to a truly secial occasion.
