Named after a famous nightclub in fin du siècle (end of the century) Paris, this sparkling pastiche includes a riotous succession of dances polkas, waltzes, quadrilles and, yes, Offenbach s zesty Can-can all packaged in Manuel Rosenthal s brilliant orchestration. Even the world s greatest serious conductors von Karajan, Ormandy and Maazel couldn t resist the sheer hilarity and infectious joy of this music! As an added bonus, sensational young violinist Zachary Brandon will explore the charm and mystique of Saint-Saëns exotic Havanaise. Summer Night Pastoral for String Orchestra, Op. 58 Featuring the Strings of the NSO Serenade for Strings, Op. 48 Mozart s Serenata Notturna, a miniature masterpiece of rococo charm, is combined with the enchanting Summer Night of Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, the story of a magical, late-night gathering in the country. s popular Serenade for Strings, complete with elegant waltz, soaring elegy, and robust, folk-inspired finale, completes this unique selection of Night Music, each a perfect showcase for the NSO s superb strings. Meanwhile, back in the Vienna of her mother, Queen Maria Therese, young Mozart reigned supreme in the city s bustling musical life. His dark, dramatic Piano Concerto No. 24, which brilliantly captures the metamorphosis of elegant classicism to passionate Romanticism, is brought to our stage by the superb young pianist Andrew Guo. The program opens with another of the delightful Overture: Symphonies by English composer William Boyce, his Symphony No. 2, dedicated to King George II himself. Young superstar violinist Joshua Brown, recently returned from the competition in Siberia, will bring the concerto to life with his own unique brand of musical artistry. Concerts start at 4:00 pm and we suggest you arrive about 3:30 pm. Allow extra time if you need to pick up or buy tickets. If you are attending the pre-concert lecture at 2:30 pm, we suggest you arrive at 2:15 pm. Concert Length The concerts usually end between 6:00-6:15 pm and include one 20-minute intermission. Convenient Location Concerts are held at the Sheely Center for the Performing Arts, located on the campus of Glenbrook North High School at 2300 Shermer Road, Northbrook, IL. See the map on the last page for directions. Handicap Accessibility Handicapped parking spaces are available near both concert hall entrances. There is a ramp at the main entrance but no ramp is needed at the stage entrance. Wheelchair spaces are available in the concert hall. Please note: there is no elevator to the balcony seats (55 steps to climb) and there are no restrooms on the balcony level. Please call the NSO office at to discuss your special seating requirements. Jim Kendros, Pre-Concert Lecturer and Composer Fellow Often referred to as The North Shore s Favorite Music Historian, Jim Kendros celebrates his twentieth year as pre-concert lecturer for The NSO. Jim will enhance your concert experience by providing deeper insights into the music you are about to experience. Each lecture includes compelling interviews with the soloist (schedules permitting) and engaging visual presentations that helps lead to a greater understanding of the composers and their works. Make an afternoon of it and include Jim s lecture in your concert plans. Jim s lecture is an added benefit to your NSO ticket purchase.
