2 NEW Piano Ensemble Collections Sixty Fingers by Susan Griesdale was commissioned in 0 by Margie Feduck of Port Colbourne Ontario and premiered at the Port Colbourne Festival of the Arts Music Festival in May 06 A high spirited sextet for two pianos twelve hands, this piece is infused with strong accents, catchy rhythms and is intended to be a light hearted, upbeat musical romp with a few humorous moments along the way Engaging the listener immediately with its high energy percussive nature and offbeat musical motives, this sextet is great fun to learn and is a big crowd pleaser The final beat of the piece makes it particularly well suited to close any recital programme Snow Blossoms by Beverly Porter is an elementary level duet for one piano, four hands with equal parts It is in ABA form and the secondo has the melody in the B section Recent Events Susan Griesdale, Martha Hill uncan, Beverly Porter and Joanne Bender presented the works of all 0 of the Red Leaf Pianoworks composers at the ORMTA Convention in Chatham on July Martha Hill uncan presented When the Piano Sings This workshop explored the addition of vocal imagery to piano teaching, interpretation and performance On September, 06, Mathew Walton completed his University of Alberta MA in Piano Performance degree with a recital featuring all twenty four of John Burge s Piano Preludes The event has been posted to YouTube (ust search Burge Preludes Walton ) John Burge composed the opening work for organ, brass and timpani to inaugurate the new organ as part of a five-year rebuilding of St Michael s Cathedral in downtown Toronto Titled, St Michael and All Angels, the work was performed three times during services and concerts on September 9 and 0, 06 Janet Gieck gave a presentation entitled Inspiring Creativity Through Composition at the APTA conference in Red eer, AB and attended the trade show there Sept 0 - Oct Peter Rudik was also in attendance Rebekah Maxner presented Red Leaf publications in a workshop at Long McQuade in New Minas, Nova Scotia on Monday, October rd, 06 In October 06, Martha Hill uncan, with her astrophysicist husband Martin co-produced an astronomical choral extravagana with her choir, She Sings And other Kingston ensembles and musicians Entitled October Skies, the songs were celestially themed and accompanied by stunning astronomical visuals and narrations
3 Congratulations to Joanne Bender Her piece entitled July st, won the CFMTA Call for Compositions for Level - 6, and will be played by students across Canada for Canada Music Week Upcoming Events Susan Griesdale is adudicating November Canada Music Week for Contemporary Showcase Festival in Chatham Ontario on November 6 The ORMTA Central Toronto Branch has invited John Burge to present a Composition Master Class for students of all ages at the Canadian Music Centre on Sunday, November 0, 06 in Celebration of Canada Music Week John will provide an overview of compositional approaches and then work all the participants on their compositions with lots of time for questions and answers A great aspect of these sessions is that all participants will go home with a signed volume of one of John s Red Leaf Pianoworks collections Janet Gieck is adudicating Contemporary Showcase in Castor, AB on Nov 0 Joanne Bender will be adudicating student compositions and presenting a composition workshop for Brantford ORMTA on Nov 0 Joanne is also coordinating KW ORMTA's Canada Music Week Master Classes and Recital on Nov 6 Martha Hill uncan is adudicating Canada Music Week in Kingston, November 6 7 and Ottawa, ecember On January 8, 07 Marvin Rosen will perform Janet Gieck s Frantic at a piano recital of all women composers in Princeton, NJ Martha Hill uncan is invited as a choral clinician in January 07 for the El Paso, Texas Middle School All Region Choir where two of her choral works, The Star and Sunset Song, will be performed John Burge is looking forward to the premiere in January, 07, of a one-woman show with piano titled, One Last Night with Mata Hari With book and lyrics by Craig Walker, a colleague of John s at Queen s University, this show has been almost four years in development having been nurtured through three workshops With the truly incomparable Patricia O Callaghan as Mata Hari and Gregory Oh on the piano, there will be eleven performances in Kingston from January - Check out wwwtheisabelca for more information Joanne Bender, John Burge, Martha Hill uncan, Susan Griesdale and Teresa Richert will be presenting some of their newest music and attending the trade show at the MTNA/CFMTA Conference in Baltimore, March 8, 07 Susan Griesdale is adudicating the piano classes at the Sunderland Lions Music Festival in Ontario from February to 7, 07
