Canadian Music Teacher s Convention, Regina July 20 Turning Over A New Leaf Particiants exerienced the creation of a new collaborative music venture while learning about the challenges, trends and music of living comosers. Hosted by Martha Hill Duncan, and with erformances by, and CFMTA Cometition Winner! s iece Arctic Voices was this year s CFMTA Winner for the Call For Comositions grade - Piano Solo Category. This iece is being made available to teachers across Canada for Canada Music Week. You can hear Arctic Voices and download the score at - click on the Winners 20 link. Beverly Porter, audience members were encouraged to follow their own musical dreams as a consequence of learning about the collaborative success of Red Leaf Pianoworks. Teaching Adult Students Host described the challenges facing adult students with helful tis and handouts on how to hel the older student rogress. I grew u on an acreage near Grande Prairie, in northwest Alberta. There was always a lot of music my father taught bands and orchestras, my mother taught classroom music and directed choirs, and my sister and I took lessons in various instruments and layed in school music grous. But even more than music, the most imortant thing in my life has always been creativity. Comosition has been a creative outlet since I was about five years old, but throughout my childhood I also drew ictures, wrote stories, assembled monthly magazines documenting the family s activities, and rogrammed simle adventure games on our comuter. I haven t changed all that much - I m always haiest when I m making something. What kees you busy now? I ve been fortunate enough to make a living using some of the same creative outlets I exlored as a child. I comose music for musicians of all kinds five-year-old students all the way u to symhonic ensembles. I love to create hands-on activities for my iano students, and I also design online music games for a website called Tonic Tutor which I co-created along with my husband, William Ratke. When I m not busy with those things, I m usually walking around downtown Ottawa, or at home benefitting from the affection and wisdom of my lovely cats. 2 New Releases (continued from interview, age ) Martha Hill Duncan Flying Horses, Talking Fish and If Dogs Could Talk - These ianosongs are designed to develo rhythm, reading and itch matching skills in the asiring young musician. They can be erformed with or without singing and work equally well for early ianists and singers alike. Beverly Porter Land of the Silver Birch is a collection of contemorary folk song arrangements of the North-East. Rags to Riches has various styles from jazz to rags and imressionistic. Elementary to intermediate. Industrial Revolutions Per Minute ( iano, six hands) has a great groove and uses lots of extra-iano sounds: slas, knocks, and voice effects. Great for guys, teens, and all creative tyes! Intermediate. Titanic Early Intermediate iano solos arranged from music that was layed on the Titanic. Historic hotos and notes included. You ve written some iano quartets. How did you become interested in this instrumentation? In my home town there is an amazing and energetic teacher who commissions iano quartets from me on a fairly regular basis. At first I found them quite difficult - it seemed that there were too many hands available and not enough variety of tone colour with everyone laying the iano. Over the years, however, I have started to develo a technique for comosing these ieces. My most recent effort, called Just Fun, was remiered this summer at a iano cam here in Ottawa by the cam staff (of which I was a member). And I m excited about an advanced quartet called How Beautiful is the Rain, which is almost finished: it s a very lively iece that features some interesting effects with edaling and glissandos. I ll ost both of these ieces on the Red Leaf site when they re ready! What can you tell us about the comlimentary iece? A Na on the Porch was originally from my self-ublished intermediate book, In the Neighbourhood. It s now art of a slightly different collection of ieces entitled Sunny Days, which is available for download from a new site called It s a very lazy iece about drifting in and out of slee. The cadenza-like sections are reminiscent of fleeting dreams and should be layed very freely. You can find more of s music at Susan s solo Piano Poems are now gathered together in a collection. Music that is intentionally written to fall easily into the hands and geared for the intermediate layer. Ideal for teens and adults. Northern Menagerie, Seascae, and Seasons (not shown). The Gala Trio in Saskatoon (French horn, sorano, iano) erformed Indeendence times in the ast few months. Joanne will conduct her newly commissioned Cantata in Waterloo, ON, in November Selections from iano collections Petals and Bugs erformed by Rachel Kiyo Iwaasa at Vancouver Pro Musica s Sonic Boom Festival at the Western Front, Vancouver (March, 20), at Brittannia Mine Museum, BC (art of a New Music in New Places resentation by Astrolabe Musik Theatre, May, 20) and at the CFMTA convention in Regina. Magnificat for women s choir was erformed this summer at Festival 00 in St. John s, NL, and in Setember in Exeter Cathedral (Devon, England). So far, so good! for double bass and iano will be remiered at Wells Cathedral School in Somerset, England, in October. In November, Three Autumn Scenes will be remiered in BC by the Prince George Symhony Orchestra. Also in November, Four Animals for SATB choir and iano will be remiered in Alberta by the Grande Prairie College Choir.
