September Angel Street by Patrick Hamilton Tuesday - Saturday, 7:30 pm, Theatre 151 Directed by senior Ginny Holladay A Victorian thriller, Angel Street, tells the story of a young wife whose fragile mental state hangs in the balance between her potentially dangerous husband and an eccentric detective claiming to have all the answers. October 2 Concert with the Far East Broadcasting Korea Children s Choir Tuesday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall The FEBC-Korea Children s Choir has delighted audiences around the United States with their beautiful voices, colorful costumes, and skilled choreography. The choir has performed at Disneyland, Walt Disney World, The Pentagon, Walter Reed Medical Center and numerous churches, colleges, universities and music festivals. Tonight, the concert also features pianists Mr. Michael Rector and Ms. Sylvia Hong, a member of the Belhaven music faculty. Arts Ablaze

2 October 13 Preston Chamber Music Series An Evening of Diamonds I Saturday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall Homecoming weekend in the Center for the Arts concludes with the intimacy of Chamber Music in the first of our Preston Chamber Music Series fall concerts. Mississippi Symphony Orchestra clarinetist Kenneth Graves is assisted by Belhaven pianist Dr. Stephen Sachs and recent Belhaven graduate and MSO violinist Shellie Brown in a program including Gershwin s Preludes, Poulenc s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano, Khachaturian Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano and much more. October 16 Poetry Reading: Sandra Beasley Tuesday, 8 pm, Recital Room Sandra Beasley is the author of I Was the Jukebox, winner of the Barnard Women Poets Prize; Theories of Falling, winner of the New Issues Poetry Prize; and the memoir Don t Kill the Birthday Girl: Tales from an Allergic Life. Honors for her work include selection for the 2010 Best American Poetry, the University of Mississippi Summer Poet in Residence position, a DCCAH Individual Artist Fellowship, the Friends of Literature Prize from the Poetry Foundation, and the Maureen Egen Exchange Award from Poets & Writers. 4 November 6 Preston Chamber Music Series An Evening of Diamonds III Tuesday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall Performing for the first time at Belhaven, Amanda Smith Roberts and Jonathan Roberts of The Stardust Duo grace the stage this fall. The husband and wife violin/piano duo have been performing together since 2008 and specialize in performing not only standard classical repertoire, but also works that incorporate popular styles, namely jazz and blues. The duo s upcoming program will feature works by Johannes Brahms, William Grant Still, Astor Piazzolla, Mark O Connor, and a recent commission from Michael Annicchiarico based on Hoagy Carmichael s jazz tune Stardust. 5 November 15 Wind Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Guitar & Jazz Ensemble Concert Thursday, 7:30 pm, Concert Hall Come and experience a new and unique combination of chords and timbres as the Wind Ensemble moves to the contemporary avenue and performs some of the newer music in the wind band repertoire. With a variety of ensembles, a confluence of improvisational genres and styles delivers a unique musical flavor! This is a musical stew with all the ingredients including contemporary jazz, some original B.U. Blues and a side dish of some Gospel Music, jazzed up of course. In short, IT S GONNA BE FUN! 6 November 30 & December 1 The 80th Annual Singing Christmas Tree Friday & Saturday, 7:30 pm, Soccer Bowl This year marks Belhaven University s 80th anniversary of the Singing Christmas Tree, the oldest outdoor singing Christmas tree tradition in America. Dr. Christopher Shelt conducts the 80 voices of the Belhaven Choral Arts programs plus the Christmas Tree 80th Anniversary Choir, made up of participants from the tree s history. This will be a year you won t want to miss! Complimentary admission. December 2 Choral and Vocal Arts: Handel s Messiah Sunday, 2:30 pm, Concert Hall (Matinee) For more than decade, Dr. Christopher Shelt has given every member of the Belhaven Choral and Vocal Arts programs the opportunity to perform Messiah. Belhaven s performance is excerpted from the entirety of Handel s oratorio, maintaining the continuity of its comprehensive biblical portrait of the life and work of Jesus; his birth, death, resurrection, return, and eternal reign. Dr. Shelt will conduct the 80 voices of Belhaven Concert Choir and Chorale, along with soloists and orchestra in concertato style, contrasting large choir and small choir textures. January 18 & 19 Opera Arts Little Opera for Children: The Pied Piper of Hamelin by Seymour Barab Friday, January 18, 7:30 pm Saturday, January 19, 10 am, 2:30 pm and 7:30 pm, Concert Hall Ever hear the expression You ve got to pay the piper? It comes from a very old story dating from the Middle Ages about a Piper in a pied (multi-colored) outfit who has a flute endowed with magical powers. Belhaven Opera Arts is proud to produce another Seymour Barab operatic adaptation of the classic, The Pied Piper of Hamelin. American Seymour Barab (1921-) received a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Opera Association. Kurt Vonnegut says: Barab s music is full of magic. He proved to an atheist that God exists. Dr. Christopher Shelt and Belhaven Vocal Arts students present this clever oneact Barab classic. Saturday morning family matinee is sponsored by Mississippi Opera. Complimentary admission. The Community Dance Concert involves Belhaven University artists as well as community wide dancers and artists. All of our events include original compositions created by our innovative dance faculty, seasoned guest artists and students studying dance crafting. S. Bach, Fantasy in F Minor, Op. 103, D. 940 by Franz Schubert, a monumental work by P.D.Q. Bach and some finger buster etudes.
