4 2016 Festival Highlights Dover Quartet, Orion Weiss, Tara Helen O Connor, and Eric Kim.

5 S Sunday Series 6 concerts at 6 PM: July 17, 24, 31; August 7, 14, 21 M Monday Series 6 concerts at 6 PM: July 18, 25; August 1, 8, 15, 22 JULY 17, 18 Kick off the new season with a grand Tchaikovsky favorite! Souvenir de Florence is all about sunny skies and convivial people in Italy s iconic city; Mozart spreads his own brand of sunshine in the String Quintet, K. 515; plus Artistic Director Marc Neikrug s Kaleidoscope with Marc himself at the piano, joined by clarinetist Todd Levy. JULY 24, 25 Youth rules when two fantastic ensembles the Johannes and Pacifica string quartets join forces in the spirited Octet by 16-year-old prodigy Felix Mendelssohn. Pianist Orion Weiss makes his Festival debut in Beethoven s Piano Trio, Op. 70, No. 2. JULY 31, AUGUST 1 Warming the hearts of violists and viola fans everywhere: Takemitsu s A Bird Came down the Walk not heard in Santa Fe in more than a dozen years. Then enjoy Schubert s expansive Piano Trio in E-flat and Mendelssohn s dramatic String Quintet No. 2. AUGUST 7, 8 Schubert s delectable Trout Quintet tops off a concert that also includes Moszkowski s little-known gem, Suite for Two Violins and Piano, with father/daughter violinists William and Alexandra Preucil and returning pianist Alessio Bax. AUGUST 14 Peter Serkin meets Arnold Schoenberg in our Artist-in-Residence s own arrangement for piano and string quartet of the Chamber Symphony No. 1. Baritone Kelly Markgraf is in the spotlight for Poulenc s Le bal masqué, set to poems of Max Jacob (some have called his verse cubist poetry. No surprise he shared rooms with Picasso in Paris!). And then a classic: Beethoven s engaging String Quartet No. 12. AUGUST 15 Brahms looks at love from all sides in his Liebeslieder Waltzes: happy, sad, jealous, passionate you name it set to lilting waltz rhythms and performed by four fabulous singers Susanna Phillips, soprano; Sasha Cooke, mezzo-soprano; Benjamin Bliss, tenor; and Kelly Markgraf, baritone; and a pair of stellar pianists, Pei-Yao Wang and Haochen Zhang. Plus music of Elgar and Oliver Knussen s Masks, in which Tara Helen O Connor has a few surprises up her flute-bearing sleeves. AUGUST 21 If you ve ever wanted to master an instrument just so you could play a particular work, Schubert s sublime String Quintet in C Major would be a reason to start practicing now. The brilliant Dover Quartet and superb cellist Eric Kim will play it for you on the final 2016 Sunday Series concert. AUGUST 22 Artist-in-Residence Peter Serkin and the Dover Quartet conclude the 2016 Festival with Dvořák s Piano Quintet, one of the three undisputed masterpieces in the form (~ Guide to Chamber Music). You ll want the music to go on forever! 3

6 NEW THIS SEASON: Thursday and Albuquerque Series patrons: Wednesday evening concerts will be in Santa Fe. Thursday evening concerts, excluding August 18, will be in Albuquerque. Subscribers, please don t worry your favorite seats will be held for you on your new day! W Wednesday Series in Santa Fe (formerly the Thursday Series) at 6 PM 5 concerts: July 20, 27; August 3, 10, 17 JULY 20 When you re named after one of the biggest constellations in the night sky, the pressure is on to display a little star power and the young pianist Orion Weiss did exactly that virtuosity to spare. ( ~ Washington Post) Now you can hear him on our Wednesday Santa Fe and Thursday Albuquerque series in Dvořák s Piano Trio, Op. 65, along with Kyoko Takezawa, violin, in her Festival debut, and Keith Robinson, cello. JULY 27 Brahms s Clarinet Trio, Op. 114 introduces Romie de Guise-Langlois ( a formidable clarinetist ~ The New York Times) to the Festival. Plus Bartók s popular Contrasts, which includes a mis-tuned violin, some of the composer s music of the night, and a dance that might have had you enlisting in the Army (if you lived in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, that is). AUGUST 3 Brahms didn t always wear too-short pants or a shaggy beard. He was a handsome, eligible bachelor when he wrote the ardent String Sextet No. 2. In it he tried to exorcise his guilt for having courted, then rejected, his fiancée by weaving her name into the work. Plus the first Festival performance of String Quartet No. 1 by the composer nicknamed the Spanish Mozart, 15-year-old Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga, a child prodigy who never lived to see his 20th birthday. AUGUST 10 Father/daughter team William and Alexandra Preucil concertmaster and assistant concertmaster of the Cleveland Orchestra join husband-and-wife team Ida Kavafian and Steven Tenenbom, violas, and Mark Kosower, cello, for Brahms s String Quintet No. 2. Plus English composer Frank Bridge s brilliant Phantasie Trio No. 1. AUGUST 17 Dvořák s infectious Czech flavors shine through his String Sextet when played by the Dover Quartet; Steven Tenenbom, viola; and Eric Kim, cello. And Poul Ruders s Festival commission with the intriguing title Occam s Razor (philosophy majors: reserve your seats now!) gets its world premiere, performed by Liang Wang, oboe, and David Starobin, guitar. A Albuquerque Series (now on Thursdays) at 7:30 PM 4 concerts: July 21, 28; August 4, 11 Same programs as the Wednesday Series in Santa Fe, July 20, 27, August 3, 10. B Bach Plus 5 Saturdays at 5 PM, except for August 20 at 6 PM: July 23, 30; August 6, 13, 20 JULY 23 Concertos for flute, cello, and oboe by three Baroque masters J.S. Bach, Boccherini, and Marcello comprise our first Bach Plus concert of the season. JULY 30 Grammy-nominated violinist Jennifer Koh ( has now moved from the 4

7 status of an aspiring newcomer to that of an established star ~ The New Yorker) in a thrilling recital. AUGUST 6 Our Baroque cornucopia continues with two concertos by Telemann whose musical output is estimated at some 3,000 works! But wait, there s more: concertos by Vivaldi and J.S. Bach, who weren t exactly laggards either. AUGUST 13 Handel s hair-raising cantata La Lucrezia is performed by mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke, who sings with seductive fury (~ New York Magazine); one of Bach s sons Carl Philipp Emmanuel provides sonatas for solo flute with Tara Helen O Connor performing. AUGUST 20 Artist-in-Residence Peter Serkin, fellow pianist Julia Hsu, and friends have the last word on this season s Bach Plus Series performing J.S. Bach s Concerto for Two Pianos, Strings & Continuo, BWV 1061; plus Boccherini s Quintet for Guitar & Strings, nicknamed Fandango (yes, you ll be dancing on the way home!); and two concertos by Baroque mega-star Antonio Vivaldi performed by virtuoso trumpeter Caleb Hudson. N Music at Noon 11 concerts: 5 Tuesdays, 5 Thursdays, 1 Wednesday: July 19, 21, 26, 28; August 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 17, 18 The repertoire for our most popular series runs the gamut from Purcell to Kodály, Telemann to Takemitsu, and Beethoven to Shulamit Ran and Elizabeth Ogonek, one of our Young Composers from 2013; among the brilliant artists you ll hear are pianists Inon Barnatan, Orion Weiss, Shai Wosner, and Haochen Zhang; and the Orion String Quartet. MM Modern Masters 2 Fridays: July 29, August 5 at 6 PM JULY 29 Violinist Jennifer Koh ( made every note mesmerizing ~ Los Angeles Times ) performs excerpts from a project called Shared Madness, short works she commissioned from various composers. Excitement awaits in every note! AUGUST 5 The FLUX Quartet, known for its fearless performances of today s music, tackles the world premiere of Gideon Lewensohn s Quintet for Clarinet & Strings, a Festival commission that features Todd Levy. And hear hot-off-the press string quartets from our Young Composers String Quartet Project. TH Thursday Concert August 18 in Santa Fe at The Lensic Performing Arts Center at 6 PM AUGUST 18 The world premiere of Poul Ruders s commissioned work for guitar, soprano, and string quartet features guitarist David Starobin.
