9 About Our School The JCC Thurnauer School of Music is one of the New York metropolitan area s premier community music schools, serving over 400 students from pre-school through adulthood in northern New Jersey and beyond. Founded in 1984, it offers a comprehensive program similar to those at the finest New York conservatories, complete with instrumental lessons, music theory and ear training classes, student performing ensembles, master classes with renowned artists and professional concert presentations. Thurnauer students have performed at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Carnegie Hall, on Sesame Street, in the feature film Music of the Heart, and with such renowned artists as Wynton Marsalis, Joshua Bell, Pinchas Zukerman, and Itzhak Perlman. Our graduates have gone on to study at the Juilliard School of Music, Manhattan School of Music, Mannes College of Music, the Berklee School of Music, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. For those students wishing to pursue a professional career in music, the school provides the foundation necessary to attain the highest level of performance; students at all levels will find a supportive and nurturing atmosphere that will bring about a lifetime of joy in playing and listening to music. The JCC Thurnauer School of Music also serves as a cultural resource for Bergen County by presenting over 30 professional performances each year in the architecturally and acoustically superb 188-seat hall, the Eric Brown Theater. Recipient of a special Certificate of Excellence from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and two Awards of Excellence from the Bergen County Division of Cultural and Historic Affairs, the JCC Thurnauer School of Music is a full member of the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts. Participation in the school is open to members and non-members of the JCC on the Palisades.
