2 PROGRM NOE Dream a World was commissioned or the Centennial o the City o haker Heights, Ohio, and the haker Heights City chool District, with a generous git rom the Madeline and Dennis lock Fund o the haker chools Foundation. he work was premiered on February 15, 2012, by the haker Heights High chool Choir and tring Orchestra, Robert chneider and Donna Jelen, Music Directors, conducted by Robert chneider. Poet Langston Hughes ( ) was a major proponent o the Harlem Renaissance, a movement beginning in the 1920s in New York City s Harlem Neighborhood. he lyrical character o his poetry, and in particular his use o repetition, derived rom slave songs call and response tradition, had a signiicant inluence on music. his also makes his poetry uniquely suitable or musical setting. n Dream a World, Hughes outlines both a dream-vision, and the conditions that this vision can heal. n my setting, ollow the orm o the poem s our stanzas by setting them to the same music, though subtly varied, and leading to a climactic passage on the words nd joy, like a pearl, attend the needs o all mankind: O such a world dream! Hughes reminds us that joy, like a pearl, is hard-won and rare, but worth the struggle. Having grown up in Cleveland, Ohio, in the 1960s and 70s, was aware o the unique character o the community o haker Heights, where white people and black people were living together in relative peace beginning in the 1950s, beore the challenges o busing and integration. For this reason, the choice o Hughes text seemed natural and right. EX dream a world where man No other man will scorn, Where love will bless the earth nd peace its paths adorn. dream a world where all Will know sweet reedom s way, Where greed no longer saps the soul Nor avarice blights our day. world dream where black or white, Whatever race you be, Will share the bounties o the earth nd every man is ree, Where wretchedness will hang its head nd joy, like a pearl, ttend the needs o all mankind- O such dream, my world!
