Project Progress Report Accessible Infusion Pump User-Interface Week 1 January 29, 2007 Kevin Golebieski Work Completed Through winter break the Flo-Gard 6200 that would be reversed engineered was acquired and eventually shipped to the senior design lab. I also kept contact with Ted Barbeau in order to set up a schedule to return his Flo-gard 6201 which we weren t able to reverse engineer due to conflict of interest with current medical equipment that would be put back into use in the hospital. The first day of senior design consisted of receiving and checking the products that had been on order over break. The first product we tested was the J switch stick joystick, which we confirmed to have 4 functional switches via the use of a multimeter and resistance tests. After a quick scare that the pump had never made it to senior design it was found to be arriving in the afternoon. IV tubing was procured to run through the pump so that it would be fully functional. Upon opening the box we checked the multitude of alarms which will need to be applied to our own interface; occlusions both upstream and downstream, the door alarm, air sensor, and failure mode. The next order of business was to test the normal functions of the pump which include; primary and secondary flow rates, primary and secondary volumes to be infused, and the drip mode which is labeled KVO for keep vein open. Once the pump was confirmed to be fully functional the task of reverse engineering the pump assembly started. Once the hosing was separated, five main connectors were singled out as being used by the assembly. These pins were CN-1, CN-2, CN-3, CN-4, and CN-5. From previous knowledge of stepper motors, connector CN-3 was determined to be the input and power. The CN-5 clip was followed to the encoder, CN-2 was followed to an area behind the door, and CN-1/CN-4 were left for the occlusion sensors. To conclude the day we fumbled around to figure out how the door alarm actually functioned and we found that it uses a magnetized circuit element that is completed by a small magnet on the door release lever.
From this point Hassam and Mike met in the lab to obtain and analyze the signals which were being formed at the various connectors to further the reverse engineering aspect. I began work on the framework of our LabVIEW program to no avail. After searching and playing with all the different case and loop structures I was able to display our home menu to a text box on the front panel. However, when another text message was wired to the same box it would break the connections and display neither. An example of the basic structure I was using is below Figure 1: Beginning LabVIEW attempt This lead me to the LabVIEW examples for further study to determine the problem. With minimal headway into this path, I was able to contact Chris Liebler for some more guidance into manipulating LabVIEW to display what we wanted. The following figure is a picture of the front panel which will be the main visual element displayed by LabVIEW
Figure 2: Front panel view The next two pictures are the beginnings of the rough framework which will be expanded upon to be fully functional in the coming weeks. Figure 3: Start page view block diagram
Figure 4: Infusion rate selection page block diagram Figure 3 and 4 are extremely close to the same thing because the program is going to be built off of a state machine backbone. With the state machine you are able to run two parallel while loops that hold all of your variables and can call upon local varibles which will be changed within each state. This we give the program the ability to go to any state or in our case display according to our original GUI flow diagram. This display is possible due to tab control within LabVIEW. The user will be making selections according to the on screen information and the next screen is actually only a new tab that has the next display screen. This factor is important because of tabs can be placed in order along with being able to return back a page. Future Work The pin connector s waveforms are going to need to be completely understood so that we can begin to pull signals onto LabVIEW for recreation/manipulation. Also the LabVIEW program will need to be pushed further to include all of our display screens and options. Once both portions are completed the task of incorporating our real world electrical components will start so that the pump can be separated from the computer completely. The power supply and related circuitry will also become an issue once the project can be replicated in a virtual environment.
Project Review We have been moving steadily along towards completing the reverse engineering. The large breakthrough in getting a framework for LabVIEW makes the project seem much more prepared as we will be able to incorporate signals into a completed structure without trying to do both at once.
