Alan Caddick, marketing manager of Sign & Digital UK explains: The Green Trail was very successful at Sign & Digital UK 2012 with exhibitors noticing an increase in discussions around eco-friendly products and visitors now actively enquiring about energy consumption and recycled materials. It was only the first year last year and it went really well so that we are running it again for 2013 and this year we will be making more of it. We invite our exhibitors to make us aware of any products being shown at the event that will fit this new initiative. Sign & Digital UK: NEC, Birmingham from 30 April to 2 May More information: 2) viscom frankfurt: the largest viscom frankfurt of all times Seven percent increase in exhibitors, four percent increase in trade visitors and a totally booked-out exhibition hall: this was the largest viscom frankfurt of all times, entering new top results in the book of records. 327 exhibitors (previous event 2010: 305) from 32 countries and 12,100 trade visitors (11,600) brought a fresh breeze to this years viscom frankfurt. With these figures, viscom even exceeded the ambitious targets set before the fair. viscom impressively emphasised its role as Europe s leading trade fair for visual communication, technology and design, said a beaming viscom Director Petra Lassahn at the close of the three-day event. Since its reorientation, viscom has developed from 2006, when it counted 171 and 6,700 trade visitors, into the 360-degree trade fair for visual communication, almost doubling its exhibitor and visitor figures and including new visitor target groups from industry, retail and marketing. Providing high quality output at up to 720 x 1440dpi on all leading transfer papers, the new printers are not only the first dye sublimation models from Epson, but also printer in this sector in which every component, from ink and printhead, to printer chassis and optional accessories, are all designed and manufactured by one company. The SureColor SC-F models are durable and robust roll-fed CMYK printers that support an extensive range of applications. The mid-high volume 64-inch SureColor SC-F7000 and lowmedium volume 44-inch SureColor SC-F6000 have been developed for the efficient production of quality soft signage, sportswear, apparel, accessories, customised promotional items and decorated gadgets. More information: 4) DPI announces the arrival of the MTEX500 Following on from a successful launch at viscom frankfurt in October, Digital Print Innovations are delighted to announce the arrival of the new MTEX500 a 1.8m wide Direct to Textile production printer, into their product portfolio. As a result of a Direct Technical OEM agreement with Mimaki, the MTEX500 is manufactured by POD in Europe and is available with Disperse Inks for Polyester (Sign and Display Market), Reactive Inks for Cotton (Apparel, Fashion Fabrics, Home Textiles), Acid Inks for Silks & Nylon (Swimwear, Fashion) and Pigmented Inks for Mixed Fabrics such as Cottons, Nylons, Polyamides and Polyester (Home Textiles, sun blinds, fashion and automotive). The MTEX500 uses the Ricoh Gen5 heads producing variable drops in 4 or 8 colors with resolutions of up to 1200dpi and speeds up to 100qm/h. The MTEX500 features many ground breaking technologies but one of the main features is an Adhesive Belt System that drives the fabric through the machine, which is completely synchronized with the print carriage and suitable for the most challenging of fabrics, such as woven, circular and flat knits, non-woven, lycra and many more. The belt has a continuous wash and dry system during the operation avoiding ink contamination, dust, waste fibres and water marks. More information: 5) swissqprint runs tandem swissqprint introduced the 3.2 metre wide inkjet system named Nyala at the drupa A new, efficiency boosting print mode is now available for the high-performance machine: the tandem function keeps the machine running non-stop and makes waiting times a thing of the past. When swissqprint introduced the high-performance Nyala it struck a chord with many companies looking for both high productivity and versatility. Its printing table is 3.2 metres wide and has an output capacity of 140 qm/h or 200 qm/h if the print heads are equipped fourfold with CMYK. The first machine was sold directly at the drupa exhibition booth. A further 15 machines have been or soon will be delivered to their respective buyers. The new tandem function for Nyala will be of interest to anyone wanting to achieve the greatest possible output for serial production. More information: 7) Seal: New wide-format laminator 65 Pro MD After the global launch at the SGIA in Las Vegas, the Seal 65 Pro MD has now been shown to the European public on the fair stand of Welte GmbH at the viscom frankfurt. The new wide-format laminator was completely redesigned and is the first device to have an Easy Operator Interface (EOI). Users tab a touch-screen to quickly and intuitively enter control commands as temperature, work speed and direction, cooling fans and roller distance. It is therefore possible to monitor a work process completely from start to finish. The EOI is mounted on a swivel pendant arm that moves easily from front to back. No matter which side of the laminator user are working from, the swivel pendant provides the ultimate flexibility in the control of the laminator. The Seal 65 Pro MD can perform thermal and cold lamination and mounting consecutively as a result its bidirectional operation design. No need to wait for the front rollers to cool down before doing a mounting job. The high-performance Seal 65 Pro MD reliably processes materials with a thickness of up to 50 millimetres. The laminator offers 1650 mm (65 inches) of working width and operates at 4.25 metres per minute. More information: 8) Caldera releases version 9.10 Wide-format software specialist Caldera has announced a raft of upgrades to its award-winning RIP platform with the release of Caldera version The latest updates include integration of the Adobe PDF Print Engine (APPE) 2.6, Raster2PDF, multi-page collation and Japanese language support, along with new options and extensions such as Textile Step & Repeat and enhancements to the VisualCUT+ and EasyMedia modules. In addition, monitoring production at a glance from the print shop floor is made possible with the new Print Board plug-in for Caldera's digital signage solution Variable Display. Caldera v9.10 has been developed above all to improve reliability, stability and compliancy, with performance-enhancing tweaks to help drive productivity and efficiency, as well as helping users meet the ever-increasing demand for their output to conform to recognised standards. CopyRIP, VisualRIP, VisualRIP+ and GrandRIP+ will all benefit from the upgrades along with a number of Caldera's popular add-on modules, including cutting and colour management solutions. More information: 9) GMG ProofControl 2.0 launched GMG announces it has released version 2.0 of ProofControl. GMG ProofControl delivers contract-quality verification of proofs in seconds, and makes color accuracy objectively measurable, immediately detecting the slightest color variation in a proof. The latest update supports verification of spot colors and GMG OpenColor profiles, as well as improving the user interface. Using a spectrophotometer (external or automatically integrated within a printer), GMG ProofControl measures color bars in seconds. The resulting values are compared with target values stored in the system. All information, such as actual and target values, and the control reports are saved in a database, making it easily accessible. GMG ProofControl is available worldwide through GMG s network of authorized dealers. More information: 10) Bordeaux: Comprehensive Portfolio at viscom Bordeaux Digital Printink showcased its comprehensive product portfolio at viscom frankfurt, including new innovation in environmentally friendly technologies as well as efficiency, productivity and better ease of use in printing. At viscom, Mtec, specializing in wide format printing systems and consumable for digital printing in Germany, showed Bordeaux s broad portfolio of inks and coatings. Bordeaux has generated a lot of interest in Germany over the last few months and this was reflected by the high attendance of people who visited the booth and saw live demonstrations of our PRMS33 Mix and Match ink printing on a Mimaki JV33 printer with a bulk ink delivery system, said Matthew Reijnders, Bordeaux sales account manager. Show attendees also had great interest in new environmentally friendly products in Bordeaux s portfolio, including the Latex water based ink, EDLX, for solvent printers equipped with Epson DX printheads and the new range of dye digital ink for direct and sublimation printing. 4 11) Junkers & Müllers: Textile products at viscom frankfurt At this year's viscom frankfurt, the textile producer from Mönchengladbach presented its products on the HP stand. One feature was that all of the exhibition walls in the HP Lounge were covered with Mediatex Self Adhesive (see photo). The self adhesive, repositionable, matt textile product, Mediatex Self Adhesive, is certified as Oekotex and flame-retardant according to B1. Printed with latex inks from HP, this results in the synergy of working without a negative ecological impact. The product can be removed from the exhibition walls after the fair without leaving any residues and JM makes sure it is recycled. Mediatex Self Adhesive can be trimmed with perfect contours on cut systems and also be excellently processed to make wall tattoos. The anti-reflection, textile, matt structure of this product contributes towards a pleasant room atmosphere. More information: 12) SIHL MASTERCLASS now available SIHL MASTERCLASS to be introduced at this year s photokina, is now available. The user can profit directly from the excellent coating knowledge of Sihl, as well as, whether reels or sheet format, product consistency. The SIHL MASTERCLASS family has been organized into product groups, directly and accurately developed to fit into the following categories: Glossy, Silk & Satin, Black & White and Creative Art. The new star of SIHL MASTERCLASS Glossy Series is the Metallic Pearl High Gloss Photo Paper 290. This new high gloss photo paper has a one-off fascinating pearl shimmer too it. Middle to light colored tones take to the special coating creating penetrating colors with a special effect, even with skin tones. The Lustre Photo Paper 300 from the SIHL MASTERCLASS Silk & Satin group with the micro porous coatings show the best qualities in all the important areas: Including a very natural reproduction of skin tones, the perfection of the greyscales, as well as the wide color gamut. Through the high maximum density the details in shading are amazing. It encapsulates excellent warm tone values in highlight areas. Thanks to the special coating, the user needs less ink to achieve the same picture quality. This is especially appreciated amongst the professional users, with larger volumes of jobs. The non-sensitive surface guarantees a higher stability and supports a very good long-term durability. All print media in the SIHL MASTERCLASS Product family will be available in a variety of sizes. More information: 13) Contra Vision lights up the Night at London 2012 Visitors arriving by train at Stratford Station, the main public transport hub for the Olympics and Paralympics, were greeted by a dramatic wrap of the entire station, visible during the hours of darkness as well as daylight. It was made possible by using Contra Vision BACKLITE patented see-through graphic technology. As a Tier One sponsor of London 2012, UK bank, Lloyds TSB, took the opportunity to make a bold visual statement by wrapping the station with graphics which showcased some of the sports included in the games. This was a first for Lloyds TSB, for space advertiser, CBS Outdoor, for print and installation provider VGL, and for Contra Vision, who supplied the material which enables such striking see-through graphics 24/7. The images were printed on Contra Vision BACKLITE Performance by VGL using their NUR Fresco solvent inkjet machine and CBS Outdoor worked with Rainey Kelly, MEC and Kinetic to create this stunning installation. Both the client and the agency were delighted with the outcome. More information: 14) HP: TB Screen purchases HP Scitex FB7600 HP announced that TB Screen AB, of Västerås, Sweden, has purchased an HP Scitex FB7600 Industrial Press. TB Screen, which serves a host of retail, outdoor events and advertising clients throughout Scandinavia, made the investment to bolster its service capability and fulfil an increasing requirement for larger run lengths, particularly in relation to POS/POP print jobs. The company also owns four other HP largeformat printers. TB Screen purchased a complete HP Scitex solution through HP s Swedish channel partner, Schneidler, including the recently announced Hostert Automatic Loader. Founded in 1978 and now in its second generation of management, TB Screen AB grew sales by 30 per cent last year. More information:

5 15) ErgoSoft launches its Digital Printing Competence Center ErgoSoft AG is proud to announce that after several years of project planning, an instructional demonstration center for digital printing will be opening in early ErgoSoft France, as the new offspring of ErgoSoft AG is called, will open this training center in Sausheim, Elsass, on the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland. ErgoSoft AG has long been aware that neither instruction, consulting nor additional training in the field of digital printing is being widely offered in the market. But it is no longer enough to simply develop software; clients are looking for comprehensive solutions. This requires trained professionals with technical expertise, future-oriented sales and marketing concepts as well as the perfect combination of printers and pre- and posttreatment machines, software, inks, media and materials. Training and consulting in the instruction center will take place in cooperation with partners in these critical areas as well as together with resellers and specialists in the digital printing industry. More information: 16) Paul Turner Displays expands into year two North West based graphics, display and sign business, Paul Turner Displays (PTD), builds on the success of its first year trading by announcing many enhancements to its website and details of new showroom facilities. Added to this, PTD has also been nominated for a top business award. The website has been updated to incorporate details of recent projects and, more importantly now contains a testimonials section where potential customers can read what PTD s customers have to say about the service they have received from the company. Paul Turner Displays has also been appointed one of a handful of official national resellers of the ISOFrame equipment, including the innovative ISOFrame Wave System. PTD now has access to a centrally located 2500 square feet showroom in Staffordshire, which has five large exhibitions permanently installed demonstrating the whole range of stands on offer. Finally, to top off a successful first year, PTD has been nominated for the Lancashire Business Awards in the Lancashire small business of the year category. More information: 17) Mimaki sets up new EMEA operation to keep up with grownth spurt Print service providers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa now have easier access to industry-leading print systems following Mimak s establishment of an EMEA operation. To that end, Mimaki Europe has engaged new team members in sales, internet marketing, warranty and tech support. This expanded set-up of Mimaki Europe will help extend Mimaki s reach to EMEA. Mimaki decided to bolster its European set-up following a surge in demand after successfully launching a raft of innovative products during 2012, and generating strong sales and leads at key European trade shows. 6 19) Barbieri: SpectroPad wins if product design award 2013 BARBIERI electronic is proud to announce to be awarded with if product design award 2013 for their Spectro Pad out of submissions. The S3 is a real all-round talent in digital cutting. Every conceivable material up to a thickness of 25 mm and every contour can be processed with the cutter with optimum speed. Thanks to the fact that the machine is based on the modular principle, the device can be adapted to the latest demand at any time by adding tools, modules or handling systems. More information: 21) Roland DG receives viscom Best of 2012 Award Roland DG has won a viscom Best of 2012 Award in the Signmaking category for the SOLJET PRO4 XR-640 printer/cutter. The prize, which was awarded at viscom frankfurt, acknowledges the most innovative exhibitors. The SOLJET PRO4 XR-640 was only launched in September 2012 and has already received an award from the viscom organisation. The jury explained it choice as follows: With this unit for printing and cutting, Roland DG is appealing to professional signmakers with support for their creative work. The XR-640 can be used for the most diverse applications, including stickers, window decorations, banners, posters, textiles, vehiclewrapping or canvas. The jury gave special praise for the possibility of choosing seven- and eight different colours among CMYKLcLm, light black, white and metallic silver inks in the machine. The unit sets itself apart by its high quality and absolute precision in the results. Widely acknowledged as the world's market-leading exhibition for wide format print, FESPA 2013 (25-29 June 2013, ExCeL London) will showcase all the major processes and materials involved in the creation of promotional, decorative and industrial print, from digital and screen printing to cutting and finishing. More information: 23) FESPA Eurasia 2013 partners with ARED FESPA Eurasia 2013 is gaining significant momentum by partnering with its member association, ARED (Acikhava Reklamcilari Dernegi), the Sign Association of Turkey. The inaugural FESPA Eurasia show will take place from 3-5 October 2013 in Istanbul, Turkey. ARED has been a member association of FESPA since 2001 and has over 232 members. The organisation will have a strategic and consultative role in delivering visitors and content at FESPA Eurasia The member association will benefit directly from FESPA s Profit for Purpose programme by receiving surplus revenues from the show to reinvest in new activities and projects for the benefit of the print community across the region. As an organiser of international exhibitions, FESPA Eurasia will focus on attracting print solution providers (PSPs) from outside of Turkey by developing a marketing plan to engage with markets in Eastern Europe, Middle East, North Africa and Central Asia. 7 24) Esko: Marian Zincke New Vice President Digital Finishing Esko announces that Marian Zincke has joined the company as Vice President Digital Finishing. More information: 26) din.a.x strengthened its team Hans-Gerd Sträter, a well-known pioneer in the development of RIPs (Raster Image Processors) for the proofing and large format markets, joined the din.a.x team November 1st. Hans-Gerd became well known worldwide with his Rip BEST Color, which was adopted by EFI and was the foundation the ColorProof XF product-line. He was one of three founders of BEST GmbH where he was responsible for software engineering part of this company. Even after the adoption of the BEST GmbH he has contributed to the continuation and evolution of the product until the beginning of this year. Already on the company were happy to get Sal Passanisi on board. Sal is has 30 years in the proofing / printing industry and was signed on as Business Development Manager for Mirage, USA. Sal has his office in Tampa, Florida, and his core purpose is to expand the existing sales channel in the United States and to support their distributors and dealers.
