An Exhibit in Honor of the Buffalo Soldier Exhibit the Kampmann Library Portal at the Briscoe unveils a new exhibit with artifacts, educational panels and a multimedia presentation commemorating the Buffalo Soldier -- the African American 9th and 10th Cavalry units that played a critical role in Westward Expansion and the military history of the US. Admission to Library Portal is always Free. Cataloging the Past Scott Williams, Archivist and Publications Manager at Artpace, details the process of archiving museum artifacts, and how that process affects our collective perception of the Old West. Thousand Pieces of Gold by Ruthanne Lum McCunn This fictionalized biography chronicles a young girl sold into slavery in Shanghai and shipped to the American West in 1871 and her fight for survival and independence. Guest facilitator Amy Porter, Professor at Texas A&M, San Antonio Texas Women and the Arts Grant Award Event Ranger of the Lost Art: WPA National Parks Poster Presentation Learn the fascinating story behind the discovery of the original series of 14 posters National Parks posters and the quest to preserve and reinterpret these artistic treasures. Former Park Ranger Doug Leen and artist Brian Maebius discuss their project involving 20 years of research and surviving negatives to reconstruct the original Parks Service poster set. Seating is limited. Native Film Series Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner (2001/172 min./ Rated R) Based on an ancient Inuit legend and set against the backdrop of the Canadian arctic, a tribal chief s son plots revenge against the man who steals the heart of the woman he was to marry, causing a rupture within the community. Given the length of The Fast Runner, this screening will begin at 5:30pm. The Native Film Series is curated by actor and artist Michael Horse. Free Night of Artists Artist Reception & Preview Ticketed Event.

This is the Briscoe s largest fundraiser of the year. Ticketed Event. Night of Artists Public Exhibition Now in its 15 th year, this exhibition showcases over 70 of the country s top Western artists. Art on exhibit is available for sale. Free with Museum Susanna Dickinson: Fact & Fabrication Kate Carey, Director of Education at the McNay Art Museum, discusses fact and fabrication of Susanna Dickinson s story and her connection to the birth of Texas. Spared at the Battle of the Alamo by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Susanna is known as the Lady of the Alamo. Lotería by Mario Alberto Zambrano Using the Latin American card game of chance, Zambrano paints a haunting portrait of a young girl s joy, pain, and the events that led to her family s demise. "Foreigners in Their Own Land: The Odyssey of Texas' Native Indians and the Tejano Legacy" A viewing of the landmark PBS documentary which discusses North and Central America's indigenous peoples, European imperial conquest, and the impact on indigenous cultures. Film is followed by a discussion by Rudi Rodriguez, founder of Texas Tejano. Free Fiesta River Parade Party at the Briscoe Enjoy a fun evening along the River Walk at the Jack Guenther Pavilion with a dazzling view of the parade, a sumptuous buffet and premier access to the beautiful venue and all its amenities. Ticketed Event. Native Film Series Barking Water (2009/78 min./nr) A terminally ill man hits the road with his on-again, off-again lover to see his newborn grandchild and make amends with his estranged daughter. The Native Film Series is curated by actor and artist Michael Horse. Free Voices of the West Distinguished Lecture Series: Michael Horse Michael Horse actor, artist, and Board Member of American Indian Film Institute speaks about the evolving roles and representations of Native Americans in popular media. This lecture is held in conjunction with the Native Film Series, which he curated. $10 Non-members Free for Briscoe Members Selling the West Jenny Chowning, Head of Education & Programs at the Briscoe Museum, investigates how the West has been marketed and sold to the masses.
