2 Signature Events Announcing three showstoppers for the season. We call these Signature Events because they include the diverse talents of all three classical art forms ballet, opera and philharmonic to provide the ultimate performing arts experience. Season Opening Spectacular September Sat 21 at & Sun 22 at This landmark event features four composers in three different formats: opera, dance, and orchestral. The program opens with a work by our composer-in-residence Stella Sung, followed by Antonín Dvořák s sparkling Carnival Overture. Then, bassbaritone Mark Schnaible takes the spotlight with his performance of the Prologue from Mefistofele by composer Arrigo Boito. He is joined by three choruses and full orchestra! Next, Dayton dancers and Dayton Opera singers take the stage with excerpts from Leonard Bernstein's West Side Story, Candide, and Trouble in Tahiti. New Year s Eve Around the World December Tuesday 31 at For New Year s Eve Around the World, Maestro Neal Gittleman conducts the Philharmonic in a festive program that delves into the wide-ranging music of diverse cultures and different countries around the world, including Africa, Bohemia, England, France, Russia, and of course Austria, with Johann Strauss II s On the Beautiful Blue Danube waltz at the thematic core of this musical program. Artfully woven into the proceedings will be light opera arias and dance. Enjoy the traditional flute of champagne at intermission and the grand finale balloon drop. Aida May Friday 2 at & Sunday 4 at Aida the original pyramid scheme returns after a decade! Giuseppe Verdi s grandest of grand operas is filled with spectacular pageantry, emotional arias, thrilling choruses and dancing, and spinetingling orchestral music. Set in ancient Egypt, this intense drama centers on the love triangle of captive Ethiopian princess Aida; her rival, the Egyptian princess Amneris; and Radames, the Egyptian commander they both love. Artistic Director Thomas Bankston draws on the full forces of the Dayton Philharmonic and Dayton for this lavish production.

23 Giuseppe Verdi's monumental Aida and Beethoven's earthshaking Ninth Symphony make May a month to celebrate.

24 M A Y Before 1824, no composer had ever used voices in a symphony. It is ironic that the first composer to do so could not hear the effect; he was almost totally deaf. But Ludwig van Beethoven had refused to let his physical impairment keep him from composing eight previous symphonies as part of an immense body of work. So, on May 7, 1824, he sat in front of an orchestra, four vocal soloists, and a chorus his first appearance on any stage in 12 years and conducted a masterpiece.
