We would also like to say thank you for your continuing support last year. The ongoing commitment of our community is truly wonderful and this year we hope to continue to go from strength to strength! We enjoy staying connected to our supporters. Donations to WASO help us continue to touch souls and enrich lives through music for as many West Australians as possible. Increasingly this support underpins all our programs. To be relevant, to build our audiences and to reach people who don t have the opportunity to visit the, WASO has a busy and growing Community and Education program that presents music to many thousands of people, in many different and sometimes surprising ways, outside the hall. We simply could not do all that we do without your support. The Private Giving Team: Sarah Gallinagh, Alecia Benzie and Jane Clare. We are also committed to the creation of new music. In 2012 we created a campaign to commission a new piece of work. With the support of our Chairman Janet Holmes à Court AC, who generously matched the $15,000 raised by the community, our Making Music Together campaign successfully raised $30,000. 7 An afternoon at the movies! Performance 4pm, Sunday 17 March Windsor Cinema Join us at Luna Windsor Cinema for a private screening for WASO s Patrons and Friends! Performance is an engaging film by Yaron Zilberman, with strong performances by an exceptional cast including Philip Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken. Set in contemporary Manhattan, Performance tells of a world-renowned string quartet struggling to stay together as they mark their 25th anniversary. When the elderly leader of the quartet discovers the onset of Parkinson s Disease, it throws the future of the famed group into question. His attempt to find a replacement player and organise rehearsals for their upcoming concert bring up unresolved issues and grievances. In the face of illness, competing egos and insuppressible lust, can they pull together for one final great performance of Beethoven s Fugue at Carnegie Hall? Easy to get to, situated at the beginning of Stirling Highway in Nedlands, the Windsor Cinema has ample free car parking located behind the cinema. If catching public transport bus No.s 102 and 107, from Perth CBD, stop metres from the door. Tickets are $20 for Patrons and Friends and $25 for guests, including light refreshments. To book please call the WASO Box Office on WASO s doorway to music Whether you are booking for a concert, a Patrons and Friends event, or just want some help with future programs, the WASO Box Office Team is there to help. Situated on the ground floor at 445 Hay Street, the Customer Service ladies (and gentleman!) attend to all booking enquiries, whether by telephone, post, or in person. When telephoning in this digital age, instead of being told to press buttons (followed by the hash key of course!) it is so good to actually speak to a person. When that person is friendly, courteous and knowledgeable then the experience is particularly satisfying. In addition to Patron and Friends events, the Box Office team are fully familiar with WASO s program, which in itself is no small feat if, like me, you have gone through the 2013 brochure and realise how many diverse events are being held this year. It is no surprise that the Customer Service team all have a great interest in music and WASO in particular. There is always a team member on concert-night duty at the WASO desk at the St Georges Terrace end of the Concert Hall foyer. They help attendees with queries, issue pre-ordered tickets, assist those who have left their tickets at home and can even provide a cough drop! Josie Aitchison and Margaret Daws at the WASO Box Office. Patrons and Friends events are now also booked through the Box Office which has simplified the booking procedure. This events program for 2013 is nearly complete and we encourage you to book early, as some events are limited in numbers. Encore will always remind you about upcoming events, so make sure you keep it handy! Regular updates are also sent to Patrons and Friends via . Barry Neubecker Patron, subscriber and Patrons & Friends Committee member
8 The WASO Song Book The WASO Song Book is an incredibly special opportunity for you to become part of WASO s history. Each year our aim is to perform new works for our audiences, providing opportunities to nurture musical careers and create new pieces of music that may become the classics of tomorrow. These works, over a period of years, will form The WASO Song Book new pieces commissioned for WASO, by WASO. It is a truly unique project and we are inviting you to join us and be a part of this exciting and extremely rewarding creation. Commissioning a piece means that you are credited on the score forever. Your name will be mentioned in program notes and all other publications where the work is discussed. Anonymity is respected, if that is your preference. Where possible, you will have the opportunity to meet the composer and perhaps most importantly, you will get the pleasure of knowing you are supporting the creative minds of contemporary Australia and that you have enabled the composition of a new work of art that would otherwise not have been created. Excitingly, this year James Ledger has been commissioned by Geoff Stearn to compose a Violin Concerto which is making its world premiere on Friday 18 October at WASO s Masters 7 concert, Strauss and Ravel. We will soon be announcing the composer commissioned from our 2012 Making Music Together campaign! This campaign raised $30,000 to fund an original composition and special thanks must go to Janet Holmes à Court AC, founding patron of the WASO Song Book, who generously matched the $15,000 raised by the community. If you are interested in being a part of The WASO Song Book and joining a special community of WASO supporters, dedicated to building the music of tomorrow, please contact Alecia Benzie, Executive Manager, Private Giving on or benziea@waso.com.au Donations to The WASO Song Book have produced the following works: Sir John Tavener Little Ceremonial Performed by WASO Friday 26 & Saturday 27 March 2010 This was supported by Janet Holmes à Court AC (co-commission with Norfolk and Norwich Festival) Ross Edwards Elegies and Epiphanies Performed by WASO Thursday 2, Friday 3 & Saturday 4 December 2010 This was supported by Peter R. 9 Friends of WASO Scholarship The Friends of WASO Scholarship was created to provide full time members of the Orchestra an opportunity to apply for funding to support their professional development, both in Australia and overseas. Funds can be used to assist with travel, tuition, attendance at conferences, masterclasses and other learning activities. Funds for the Scholarship are generated through events held for our Patrons and Friends community throughout the year, including the ever-popular WASO in Rehearsal and Meet the Section events. Regardless of their experience or career stage, all musicians can benefit from opportunities for development, such as the experience of learning from great master performers. Having well-supported events for Patrons and Friends is not only a lot of fun and a great way to meet other fans of WASO, but the money raised goes straight into the Friends of WASO Scholarship, used to provide training and leadership opportunities for the musicians, says Robyn Glindemann, President of WASO s Patrons and Friends Committee. The audience gets to see the benefits of those scholarships when musicians return invigorated and brimming with new ideas. The Friends of WASO Scholarship is one way that Friends and Patrons can provide genuine and long-lasting support for WASO musicians. Louise Sandercock was 2012 s recipient of the scholarship. I am most grateful to have received a Friends of WASO scholarship, she says. It enabled me to experience a most musically and culturally enriching time in Europe and essentially to experience firsthand where it all began. I gained much in the six weeks I was away, which has paid handsomely towards my playing (in the Orchestra) and also contributed towards me achieving a very coveted Fellowship of Music qualification. Louise Sandercock. If you would like to learn more about becoming a Friend of WASO visit the Support tab on our website at or contact us on or friendsofwaso@waso. com.au.
