Radio-controed Timekeeping Precautions Strong eectrostatic charge can resut in the wrong time being set. Even when the watch is within the reception range of the transmitter, signa reception is impossibe if the signa is bocked by mountains or other geoogica formations between the watch and signa source. Signa reception is affected by weather, atmospheric conditions, and seasona changes. The time caibration signa is bounced off the ionosphere. Because of this, such factors as changes in the refectivity of the ionosphere, as we as movement of the ionosphere to higher atitudes due to seasona atmospheric changes or the time of day may change the reception range of the signa and make reception temporariy impossibe. Even if the time caibration signa is received propery, certain conditions can cause the time setting to be off by up to one second. The current time setting in accordance with the time caibration signa takes priority over any time settings you make. The watch is designed to automaticay update the date and day of the week for the period January 1, 2000 to December 31, Setting of the date by the time caibration signa cannot be performed starting from January 1, This watch can receive signas that differentiate between eap years and non-eap years. Though this watch is designed to receive both time data (hour, minutes, seconds) and date data (year, month, day), certain signa conditions can imit reception to time data ony. Normay, the signa reception date shown by the Last Signa screen is the date data incuded in the received time caibration signa. When ony time data is received, however, the Last Signa screen shows date as kept in the Timekeeping Mode at the time of signa reception. If you are in an area where proper time caibration signa reception is impossibe, the watch keeps time within ±15 seconds a month at norma temperature. If you have probems with proper time caibration signa reception or if the time setting is wrong after signa reception, check your transmitter, current city code, and DST (summer time) settings. The year can be set in the range of 2000 to The watch s buit-in fu automatic caendar makes aowances for different month engths and eap years. Once you set the date, there shoud be no reason to change it except after you have the watch s battery repaced or when battery power drops to Leve 4. The current time for a city codes in the Timekeeping Mode and Word Time Mode is cacuated in accordance with the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) differentia for each city, based on your Home City time setting. GMT differentia is cacuated by this watch based on Universa Time Coordinated (UTC*) data. * The etters UTC stands for Universa Time Coordinated, which is the word-wide scientific standard of timekeeping. It is based upon carefuy maintained atomic (cesium) cocks that keep time accuratey to within microseconds. Leap seconds are added or subtracted as necessary to keep UTC in sync with the Earth s rotation. Press A to exit the setting The Power Saving on (SAVE ) is on the dispay in a modes whie the Power Saving is turned on. Backight Precautions The eectro-uminescent pane that provides iumination oses power after very ong use. The iumination provided by the backight may be hard to see when viewed under direct sunight. The watch may emit an audibe sound whenever the dispay is iuminated. This is due to vibration of the EL pane used for iumination, and does not indicate mafunction. The backight automaticay turns off whenever an aarm sounds. Frequent use of the backight shortens the battery operating time. 5

6 Auto ight switch precautions Wearing the watch on the inside of your wrist, movement of your arm, or vibration of your arm can cause frequent activation of the auto ight switch and iumination of the dispay. To avoid running down the battery, turn off the auto ight switch whenever engaging in activities that might cause frequent iumination of the dispay. Note that wearing the watch under your seeve whie the auto ight switch is turned on can cause frequent iumination of the dispay and can run down the battery. More than 15 degrees too high The backight may not ight if the face of the watch is more than 15 degrees above or beow parae. Make sure that the back of your hand is parae to the ground. The backight turns off after about one second, even if you keep the watch pointed towards your face. Static eectricity or magnetic force can interfere with proper operation of the auto ight switch. If the backight does not ight, try moving the watch back to the starting position (parae with the ground) and then tit it back toward you again. If this does not work, drop your arm a the way down so it hangs at your side, and then bring it back up again. Under certain conditions, the backight may not ight unti about one second after you turn the face of the watch towards you. This does not necessariy indicate mafunction of the backight. You may notice a very faint cicking sound coming from the watch when it is shaken back and forth. This sound is caused by mechanica operation of the auto ight switch, and does not indicate a probem with the watch.
